Modular Bay: The prominent ventral section of the prow is largely an open space designed to be fitted with a modular mission package, easily modifiable or changeable (at a shipyard) depending on the requirement for the vessel. At production, there are five such modules.
Reconnaissance: A large sensor package, towed array (for long-range hyperspace sensors) and mid-sized gravity well projector. Adds:
Combat: Extra capacitors allow for a specialized shield booster. Drains engine power. This is not a triggered effect, it is either present or not.
Medical: Large hospital suite, for humanitarian missions.
Patrol: Crew, facilities, and equipment to launch and maintain an additional Squadron of Strike Craft (typically interceptors).
Assault: Four dedicated launch bays for additional Assault Shuttles, and an extra 120 troops.
Assault Shuttle Bays: 2 dedicated Assault Shuttle bays (each carries one shuttle).
- Modularity: The different modules add to mission effectiveness and allow the Nebulon K to perform a variety of roles.
- Battle Ready: The Nebulon K is designed to be a front-line warship, able to easily match pirate factions and potentially go to war with even more serious combatants. It should not be discounted.
- The Spar: Though reinforced, heavily protected, and allow for excellent fields of overlapping fire, the central midsection spar is still a critical vulnerability.
- Under-Specialized: Will lose a fight to a dedicated frigate killer, generally.
- Overgunned: The Nebulon K actually features an armament that draws too much power for its reactor to handle. Firing the total main battery multiple times can result is cascading power failure across the ship, resulting in sudden massive fluctuations in shield strength, weapon charge times, and thrust power. This can also be triggered if the Assault Module is installed and the shield receives multiple hits in rapid succession.
The first warship designed from the ground up for the nascent Mara-Perlemian Trade Council, the Nebulon K Escort Frigate is designed to be the mainstay of a new navy, once designed to protect the livelihood of its member systems and ensure safety and security in the sector. To that end the ship was designed not only as an effective anti-piracy vessel, but also to fill in a patrol and reconnaissance role, humanitarian aid, and should things get truly dire, to act as a warship in a fleet.
The core concept behind the ship is its large modular bay, able to be fitted with one of five mission packages. These allow the vessel to excel at a variety of missions, from anti-piracy boarding operations to front-line combat. While the versatility they add is vital to the success of the Nebulon K, they don't detract from an otherwise solidly designed warship.
Armament is heavily focused on the prow, and consists of a main battery of proprietary XBR-61 Twin Heavy Turbolaser Turrets, each a capital-ship rated weapon with devastating firepower, supplemented by four XR9c Long Range Turbolaser Cannons, for a potentially devastating barrage. These are further backed up by an array of other turbolasers and Ion Cannons, giving the Nebulon K overall an excellent offensive capability. Defenses are comparatively standard but more than up for the job, and primarily limited by power draw (a problem mostly fixed by adding in the Combat Module).
Sensors and Navigation are fairly impressive and robust, as one might expect for an evolution of the classic Escort Frigate. The ship boasts a modern interior with heavy automation, but it still necessitates a large crew thanks the complexity of its design. In a nod to the anti-piracy core mission concept, two Assault Shuttles are mounted in dedicated launch bays, each capable of ferrying 40 troopers to a target, providing fire support and protection along the way.
A single squadron is housed in a fairly small hanger right where the Spar meets the main section of the ship. As MPTC vessels are typically escorted by snubfighters, this squadron is typically Interceptors or non-hyperdrive capable gunboats. A standard complement of small launches and ships boats are also housed in the hanger.
Overall the Nebulon K is a standout Frigate that has the potential to serve the MPTC for years to come, and make a lasting impact in the Tingel Arm. Unfortunately the high production costs necessary for true quality mean the ship cannot be mass-produced, but it nevertheless is becoming the iconic MPTC warship.
Following the dissolution of the MPTC, nearly every Nebulon K on the roster was listed as 'scrapped' and the plans erased from all government databases, rather than hand over the design to the Sith Empire. But evidently there was some mild treason at play, because the frigates have been spotted in the Unknown Territories flying the flag of the Sanctuary System Liberation Army. Those former MPTC officials who can be tracked down have no comment.
