Take heed, all citizens of the galaxy. The balance of the Force dips inexorably towards the Dark Side of the Force, and the Sith Empire leads the charge to subjugate all life and bring it under the sway of darkness!
The brainchild of the Lords of the Sith who survived the sundering of the One Sith in 849 ABY, chief among them Darth Prazutis, Darth Saarai, Caecus, Tirdarius, Kaalia Pavanos, and Darth Ophidia, the Sith Empire was conceived to ultimately surmount all previous works. Founded on the impenetrable fortress world of Bastion, the Sith elected their own, Darth Carnifex, to claim the singular mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith. In time, with the reclamation of the old throneworld of Dromund Kaas, the title of Sith Emperor would likewise be heaped upon his broad shoulders.
Beset from all sides by claimants, heretics, terrorists, and ancient ideological enemies, the Sith Empire fought tooth and nail to carve out a place in history for itself. To secure its own future and ensure its survival, the Sith Empire had to be ruthless and uncompromising towards its neighbors. The Dominion was but the first to stand against the resurgent Sith Lords and was promptly annihilated for its hubris. The Silver Jedi, long occupiers of the sacred Sith holy worlds, was also reminded of the power of Empire and beaten back.
Adversity colored the early years of the Sith Empire, cementing a harsh authoritarian military culture that has pervaded to this very day. All distinction between military and civilian authority is cast aside, allowing the armed forces of the Sith Empire to dominate all political, economic, and ideologic aspects of society, granting it primary position in state affairs as well as guiding all domestic policy and foreign interactions. Because of this highly militant society, all positions of government were earned by the merits of those who would seek to fill them. Sycophancy and nepotism were considered to be utter anathema to the Imperial way of life and were ruthlessly stamped out whenever discovered. Those who were capable, either through natural talent, a byproduct of their physiology, or by honed skill, were selected to serve in the highest echelons of the Empire’s administrative Directorate, the Military, and the Brotherhood of the Sith.
The population of the Sith Empire was divided along two cultural lines, the Sith and the non-Sith. This division placed the Sith in a position of supremacy over the non-Sith elements of the Empire, creating a distinct elite class reserved only for members of the Sith Brotherhood. Despite this, the non-Sith citizenry was remarkably loyal and had every opportunity to become high-ranking Imperial officers and administrators. This loyalty had been fostered from years of external wars combined with an invasive and efficient propaganda ministry, with every conflict being framed as a battle for survival rather than one of conquest. Immense contempt was conveyed for the democratic nation-states of the galaxy, framed as inefficient, chaotic, bloated, and corrupted that vied to pursue their own agendas instead of improving the wellbeing of the galaxy. Non-allied foreign political leaders were viewed as undeserving of the power they wielded as they were believed to be placed in their positions through wealth, family connections, and corruption rather than earning it.
This conjunction of traditional Imperialist beliefs and Sith ideology was termed as Sith-Imperialism and served as the bedrock of the Empire’s culture; based on the notion that great individuals rise to the top and that lesser masses must follow. This ran parallel to the Rule of Order, the Sith philosophy developed by Darth Carnifex upon the founding of the Empire.
Among the Empire, slavery was a common practice left over from the old empire and typically consisted of multiple species that were not true citizens of the Empire, ranging from Humans to non-Humans. The Sith Empire was known to make extensive use of slave labor, mainly to accumulate raw material to be used to expand and improve the Empire’s military-industrial complex. Many slaves became part of the Sith Empire as prisoners of war, or even by being transferred to Imperial ownership after their previous masters were defeated. While slaves of adequate Force Sensitivity could be freed and forcibly enrolled into the Sith Academies, non-Force Sensitive slaves could never be freed for any reason. The majority of slaves were also forcibly sterilized to limit population growth, around eighty percent of the overall enslaved populace. The remaining twenty percent were classified as a new caste of enslaved that would pass their status down to their descendants, in effect founding the basis for generational slaves throughout the coming decades and centuries.
The Sith Brotherhood is a totalitarian organization in which a supreme authority is concentrated in a single individual granted the honorific Dark Lord of the Sith. Transfer of power is conducted through state-sanctioned assassinations: when a Sith Lord grows complacent, begins to shows weakness and is eventually killed, their property and authority are transferred to the apprentice who killed them. This kratocratic system ensures that Sith are only governed by those strong enough to seize control.
Sith philosophy lionizes conflict as a catalyst for growth and as a tool for purging the unworthy. Sith viewed restraint as a weakness. Members adhere to master morality, are characterized by the desire to seize power by any means necessary, leveraging force (both physical and supernatural), social maneuvering, and political cunning to their advantage. The Sith cultivate a connection to the dark side of the Force, which provides them with easy access to superhuman power and arcane knowledge; however, the trade-off is the severe cost of adapting a dark triad personality, that corrodes their basic capacity for empathy, kindness and love.
Unlike previous incarnations of the Sith, the Brotherhood places heavy emphasis on unity and camaraderie. Many of the Brotherhood's newer acolytes were trained from a young age and were inculcated with a sense of absolute loyalty to the order; a tenet that was encouraged by many of the older members at the direction of the Dark Lord of the Sith. This gradual cultivation of loyal and united Sith was undertaken to foster a new generation of Sith who were connected by their common desire to see the galaxy remade in their image, and to exact vengeance against the Jedi who had cast them out millennia before.
The Sith Empire is an inclusive faction designed to fulfill the fantasy of writing a Lawful Evil Sith or Imperial, with an emphasis placed on upholding order and the rule of law above chaos and anarchy.
While this archetype is the most prevalent in the faction, it is not one we impose upon anyone. We want writers to utilize their creative freedoms to write interesting characters, create interesting places, build starships, and generally just craft amazing and interesting stories that they and the other Sith writers can enjoy.
