ENDOR: RESEARCH FACILITY

The First Order ruled for years and sank its hooks into hundreds of worlds. One of those worlds was Endor, and one of those hooks was this research site. Known only by a number, the site focused on - what else? - weapons development. It caught the full force of a Ssi-Ruuvi gas bomb, but the Ssi-Ruuk in question got killed by a TIE squadron that never needed to know about the facility they'd saved. It was, however, too late for the people in that facility.

The base remains intact. A few probe droids patrol the site, but the scientists and guards still lie dead in the halls. Scavenging animals have picked the bones. Now it's someone else's turn to do the same.

Two forces have converged on the site: Twenty soldiers sent by Orex Mauda, and twenty more sent by Gir Quee.

OOC rules:

  • No PCs: you’re controlling only your NPC teams.
  • ‘Dragged to safety’ is fine, ‘killed in action’ is fine, ‘buried in rubble for later recovery’ is fine. What’s not fine is not losing troops. YOUR LOSSES ARE UP TO YOU. DON’T WRITE THE OTHER SIDE’S INJURIES/DEATHS.
  • No air strikes.
  • No vehicles heavier than a speeder bike.
  • Please clearly establish, relative to cardinal directions and/or landmarks, where your troops are on the map. This is especially important if you split them up.
  • Have a stupid amount of fun please.

Emergence Forces:

Of all values The Emergence upheld, science and technology were a twin pair that remained at the forefront. Whatever it took, The Emergence was going to bring this Galaxy into a new era. One steeped in Unity and ever-advancing Science. And while this often included the devastation of planets, the toppling of Governments and the purging of certain populations, there was always room for the more covert operations. Just as important as the rest, but at a fraction of the cost.

The Emergence War-Machine had been firing on all cylinders for years, but as far back as its initial foundation, the Empire had been probing the Galaxy for points of interest. Surveying system upon system to find that which would bring the greatest benefit. Science never escaped them.

One such survey had returned an old First Order Weapons Development Research Center. This facility very quickly ticked all the boxes and barely a week after the survey came back, a task force to secure the facility and what it contained was dispatched. In orbit around Endor a Saevus-Class Cruiser dropped 5 Pods.

Two Pods containing 5 P1's each descended just outside the facility, closer to prototyping. The doors popped open and the occupants immediately dispersed. The 10 P1's headed straight for the Prototyping Sector, intent on securing the inside and locating its database. If they made it inside, their task was to download every byte of information and research, then destroy the facility.

Two Pods, one containing 5 Heavy Battle Droids, another containing only one. The Full Pod punched into the ground and released its meaty occupants. These P1H's, each armed with a Battle Rifle and a Shoulder-Mounted Turbolaser made their way towards the Prototyping Facility. However, their goal was instead to set up on the roof and keep an eye out for opposition. From there, they could shell the majority of the complex. The solo Heavy Droid landed in the parking lot, making a blazing entrance as the pod destroyed the surrounding vehicles and its 'shin-kickers' sent shrapnel in every direction, shattering glass and tearing through metal. This individual had a similar task, to set himself up on a further Building, keeping an eye on the rest of the facility.

A single pod containing 4 Recon Droids came down just the forest to the east. With variable optics and woodland-camo ferrosphere-coated cloaks, these 4 Recon Droids took to the trees. They each came to a stand-still atop their chosen tree. From where they were, they had a good view on the Complex. Here, they would continue to scan the complex for any opposition, each with a Battle Rifle in its Sniper Configuration.

Sergeant Tysias surveyed the office, sweeping his blaster rifle's barrel as he did so. Yet nothing moved. Despite the place looking like a frantic all nighter had been pulled the day before, he hadn't seen any living things yet. Not that we're expecting any, really. At least not according to what that infochant said. One of his few Bimm squadmates, a lanky fellow named Jors, waved him to look at a console, which despite a massive crack in its screen, still showed what appeared a visitor's map to the facility.

"Here we go Sarge, a layout of the 'ole place. Looks like we're in some sort office building."

Tysias bobbed his head up and down in understanding, "What we're looking for won't be here then. At least not likely. We should start moving here then, towards the prototyping section. But let's check in with Bryn and his men first."

The bimm tongue-toggled his comlink, "Sergeant Bryn, we found a map, looks like we need to start heading northeast to get to the prototypes. Have you guys found anything?"

A deep baritone voice flowed through the comms, "Not yet...and frankly, not likely either. Whatever happened here completely has torn up this level. Leap frog to the next building?"

"Sounds like a logical plan."

"We'll take first move if you take overwatch positions."

"Sounds good. We'll be ready in three."

With the conversation over, Tysias went to moving out his men. His squad filtered out of the top floor of the central building to take positions on the roof of the easternmost wing of the Admin building before hunkering down in prone positions that fanned outwards, providing a 180 degree watch across the building. But Tysias and his rocketeers focused their attention forward towards the building in front of them, looking for any threats or obstacles that might stymie their compatriot's advance to the next building. As he peered through the rifle's scope, the first members of Bryn's squad began to move forward, starting with a pair of pairs from Squad 2's Fireteam 1, who were subsequently followed by Fireteam 2 and then that squad's command element.

The Ten P1's all converged on the main entrance to the Prototyping Facility. Once gathered, the lead kicked through the door and they each entered one by one. Once inside, they began to fan out. Guns trained on every shadow and corner. The inside was desolate and trashed. The former occupants strewn across the floors, some still sat in their chairs. Light from outside dimmed through the window, the gas and dust absorbing the rays. A static, residual left-over of the Ssi-ruuk's attack still clung in the air. This was of no bother to the droids now making their way around. None spoke, they all communicated wirelessly over their neural network. Tight in form and quick in action, the P1's scanned the first floor then split. 5 took to the stairs to inspect the next level while another 5 entered an elevator. Finding it to be shut down, they each elected to open the hatch and climb out. Once out, they simply dropped down the shaft, intent on locating anything buried deeper within the facility.

The trees bristled, a calm wind moved throughout the small forest. Leaves gently fanned, brushing against cold Duraflex and Armourweave. The red optics of the Recon Droids meticulously scanned every visible angle, their variable optics allowing precise inspection of the slightest movement. One such droid caught sight of prone, somewhat hidden men. Kitted in armour and armed. The Recon relayed this to the others near him, who collectively provided the same image to the Heavies on the roof.

The Heavies had set up and had been waiting since arrival. They could do nothing more than watch and wait considering their lack of long-range optics. That was until the image of opposition was fed through to them. The single heavy located on the northernmost prototyping building analysed what it was shown and responded. It took a few steps, entered a crouch and began narrowing its aim. It could not see the opposition itself, but with sufficient data fed through from the Recons, it compiled an adequate idea. After a few moments of silence, the P1H Fired off a single shot from its SMTL. The bolt tore towards the Admin Building. Whether it had critical effect or not remained to be seen.

Sergeant Tysias saw a brief flash of light cross his field of view in an instant before he felt the duracrete tremble beneath his body. Before he could even comprehend what happened, he heard the wall crumble behind them and a brief anguished cry. Kriff...A brief shower of debris pelted his back, which thankfully his armor absorbed the brunt of. He turned around, but whatever had shot at them had not only dissolved part of the wall, but had produced a cloud of dust and steam in the process. Maybe they hit the cooling system too? Either way, I can't see a thing...He toggled his NiteSite-based HUD, turning to infrared vision. Most of his squad seemed to be moving, if a bit in shock. One body clearly was not, and it appeared to be missing its entire left side. Jors...Right next to the deceased Bimm was a Praetorian-series Synthetic Soldier, simply designated 'Ten', who appeared to have a leg caught and probablyy in the rubble. Frak. At least it's a droid. If they don't survive, they won't have any families waiting for them at home...

He toggled his comlink, "Team 1, let's get out of here while we still have cover. Team 2, cover us and start looking for who shot at us. If you see them, you are authorized to shoot..."

He didn't need any more words to get his people and droids into action. Some had already start moving even before he had given the order. That irritated him, but he couldn't blame them. Who liked getting shot at? And they know that we're here...but we know nothing about them, except that they're packing some sort of artillery with them...He followed the last of Fire Team 1 through the door and back into the building and began to head down the stairwell.

"Bryn, we've been shot at, probablyby some sort of artillery. Any resistance on your end?"

"None yet. I'm searching the building with the rest of Team 1. I have Team 2 posted just inside of the windows. One of them caught sight of where they think the shot came from, probably near the prototyping building, but we don't have any visual on the actual target yet."

"I'll take my maneuver element to try and get a better look."

He toggled his comlink one to the channel shared by his squad, "They know where we are. Might as well activate those shields. Let's head towards the white house that we saw on the map."

As he said that, the team leader followed the rest of the fire team out of the building. The others were reacting to his orders and began a light run in a dispersed wedge towards the white house. As they did so, they activated their personal shields, which appeared as brightly colored rotating spheres of panels around their bodies. They would be fairly obvious targets to anyone with a line of sight on them, and they would show up obviously on any basic sensor scan of the area, but they could also take a few hits in that way too. Withthe two synthetic soldiers at the head of their formation, Tysias was hoping that the droids would take the first hit if fired upon. He didn't want to lose another friend today. He turned his eyes towards the white house in front of them. So close, and yet so far...

Quickly ascending the steps, five P1's turned the building upside down. Yet all they found was administration papers, useless files and endless outdated blueprints. Having finally reached the top floor, the small squad rapidly leafed through files, only to conclude empty handed. They each turned to each other, weapons by their sides.

"With all those people you'd think they had something better than.."

The speaking droid peered at a design manifesto

"Bigger solar panels?" The file was scrunched and thrown across the room. Having finished their search and turning up nothing interesting, each droid unclipped a Blackjack from their waists and began prepping timers. With timers set to ten minutes, they forced the grenade spikes into the duracrete floor and hurriedly began descending the stairs.

Dark, dusty and silent. The Five that had dropped down the elevator shaft paced down the reinforced hallways, momentarily breaking from their movement to inspect labs, cabinets and corpses. One kicked through a door and entered a metallic room with a large cannon on a test stand. Glancing over it, it registered as a TIE/FO Laser Cannon. The droid gave it a closer look, placing his hand on the cannon, to which it responded by letting off a blast. A green bolt flew into the opposite wall, punching through and leaving a sizeable hole.

Their de-facto leader brought himself to an admin room within which was a large terminal. Looking somewhat important, he decided to plug himself in. After a brief process of pressing buttons and hooking up wires, the Terminal whirred to life. The plugged-in droid was silent for a moment, then mentally relayed what he needed to.

"Archive located. Downloading. Complete in seven minutes"

The lone heavy watched as a wall collapsed. The recons had relayed the result of its fire, two injured, one destroyed. In silence, the heavy delighted. Delight that was quickly replaced by excitement as he saw a group of glowing soldiers run parallel to his field of view. They were heading in the direction of a small white house. But that was immaterial. The Droid quickly kneeled and began aiming its SMTL. As it did so, it relayed the images to the four other heavies on the Prototyping main building, who quickly spun to see a similar sight of glowing men, although harder to distinguish as they were further away. All five heavies entered the same position, straight back and knelt on one knee. After a brief silence, all five turbolasers lit up, firing on the small group as they ran.

"This seems too easy. No-one's shooting at us..." intoned Skip, one of the synthetic soldiers running next to Sergeant Tysias.

Tysias briefly clenched his teeth. Yeah, but I actually have to breathe harder when I run...and you well...don't. A flash of light caught the corner of his eye and instinctively, the bimm let himself stumble into a fall that morphed into him taking a prone position. It wasn't any particular thought, but habit as ingrained by Directorate instructors. Artillery tended to produce flying shrapnel which was more likely to hit a person if they were standing. As he did so, the energy bolts from the heavy battle droids began to fall. Several of them consecutively impacted against Skip. The first smashed into the energy shield, causing its energy panels to turn a hellish fiery oranges and reds. The second bolt pierced through the shield itself and into the droid's armor. Nanoseconds later, the last bolt smashed through these weakened defenses and entirely obliterated the hapless droid. The others faired somewhat better. Because of his falling action, a boltthat otherwise would have hit Tysias directly had obliterated what had been the rear section of his personal shielding, but there wasn't any body part behind that. The others had likewise experienced minor damage, with some sections of their personal shields being knocked down, but Paine's weapon had been utterly disintegrated, forcing him to crawl and to try and retrieve Skip's weapon. Meanwhile, lucky Glen had only experienced a near miss. While that bolt hadn't directly hit him, it had hit the ground right in front of him, causing the battle droid's armor to now be splattered in still smoking dirt.

Tysias silently cursed as he peered through his rifle's scope, trying to find the enemy. They have to be able to see us if they can shoot at us with direct fire weapons, which means we should be able to see them, right? He caught a glimpse of glinting metal through his scope and referenced its location on the tactical map on his HUD. Out of range for us, but not for them. He toggled his comlink.

"Team 2, I need immediate suppression fire to these grid coordinates: 234.531. Repeat, 234.531, over."

Ten's voice came back strong, "Missiles away."

He switched his comlink back to the channel shared by his team.

"Friendly ordinance is inbound to our enemies. When it hits, we get up again and get moving. We won't last in the open like this for a long time..."

Bryn's voice began to filter through his com, "My second fire team is scanning to try and get a direct lock on the enemies attacking you. There's nothing of value here. I'm readying my first fire team to join you at the next building."

"Understood."

The Recons in the trees relayed a generally successful fire mission back to the P1H's. One fatality and overall good damage, but the shields had held up and were evidently providing decent protection. The Heavies remained in their fire positions and began to recharge their SMTL's. Moments before resuming fire, communication from the Recons, plus visible feedback interrupted them. A salvo of missiles had been fired from a row of windows and were now heading in the Heavy's general direction. As the missiles approached, each Droid turned and began a run towards the edge of their respective buildings. Unbeknownst to them, the incoming missiles were homing. The Droids each leapt from their vantage points, closely followed by the group of missiles. Following the Droids, as the dropped from the building's ledge, the missiles collided with the duracrete just behind them. Their proximity however dealt damage. The shockwave produced threw the group further and destabilised their descent, ending in a fast and awkward collision with the ground. While their thick Chassis' held up, more intricate systems did not fair as well, resulting in widespread damage to actuators.

The Single Droid further ahead was less fortunate. Being so far forward, it could have either run the length of the Building it was on, or simply drop down the front where it was. Considering the time it had, it had elected the latter. As the missile approached, the Droid jumped forward and began its descent towards the ground. Before it had hit the floor, the Missile found its way to the Droid's chest. When the Droid found its way to the ground, it did so in a heap of broken limbs and torn metals.

With the Heavies out of action for the time being, the Recon's identified exactly where the Missiles had come from and began aiming their snipers. Not intending to give away their position as they were providing vital intel, the Recons each let off a single bolt with great precision into the window rows.

"Continuing download. 5 Minutes". The 'leading' P1 reported his status. The download had continued unhindered and would carry on until completion. They had been witness to everything the top-side Droids could see but had not diverted from their tasks. The Blackjack grenades were down to 8 minutes and would annihilate the majority of useful intel and critical structure upon detonation.

Small puffs of gray and black erupted in front of Tysias's men as the missiles fell upon the heavy droid's. No laser fire flew out of that area, nor did he see the tell-tale flicker of shielding behind the dust to suggest that the enemy hadn't been hurt. Well, now's our chance, at least while they're disoriented. He pushed himself off the ground and leapt to his feet. The other survivors quickly mimicked him. The Bimm sergeant couldn't think of much aside from the white house in front of them. The man barged through the door, and quickly swept his rifle across the first room, merely going through the motions of a proper security sweep rather than actually conducting one. The others quickly followed behind him and filtered into the room. Now with some semblance of cover, the fire team began a rudimentary sweep of their new cover. It appeared to be some sort of guest house or perhaps the personal residence of some sort of First Order administrator. Either way, it held little strategic value on its own. His helmet's com buzzed with Ten's voice.

"I'm hit-"

Static briefly filled in after that, followed by silence.

"Ten? Yoije, are you there?"

But the sergeant only received silence. He repeated the words several more times, but no-one answered. Ten's secondary processor should have been able to send out some sort of message if the synthetic soldier was still operational in some capacity. But it did not. He knew instinctively that the second fire team of his squad had been wiped out. Launching the missiles probably revealed their location to better and more accurate fire than whoever first attacked us...

A series of new helmeted figures entered the room followed in the end by a somewhat taller figure than the rest, Sergeant Bryn.

"This place is too lightly built to hold," observed Tysias, "especially given the firepower that they've shown."

"Agreed. My team will hold it and catch our breath while your fireteam jumps forward...to wherever that is."

"We don't know our enemy yet," said the Bimm, "We'll advance to the position where the enemy was spotted, so if there's anything or anyone of value still left there. At least then we'll know who we're fighting."

With that, his fireteam departed once more towards the last known position of the heavy battle droids.
