#1826727 Scherezade Had a Thousand Tales, and This One Might Be about Betrayal

He listened to what she had to say, and mulled it over a moment. With that, he would respond with a bright smile.

"And what's stopping you?" He asked. "What's stopping you from doing most if not all of that now? If you want to find your grandmother, then take measures to find her. Find your parents. Go to your ancestral planet, who cares what people think if you do? And if you want to be a Warrior or whatever, why not? If it bothers you that much... Who says you can't study both paths, increase your variety? I don't see anyone complaining if you have a wide range so long as you encompass what they want, if that's that important to you. And if you can find a way to destroy the darkness... Do it?

Not that any of this will be easy, mind. But I'm not saying it's easy."

He would begin to shuffle through the basket of food for a few moments.

"I'll even help, if you want. That's what friends do, after all. We'll find your brother, somehow. We'll find your parents. We'll find your grandmother. I won't... Exactly help you kill her, not without reason, but you probably want to have her to yourself anyway. I'll just... Hang back and help out if she summons demons or something" He remarked with a shrug in turn. "I'll go with you to your ancestral planet. I'll talk you through whatever you want to do about the whole Sorceress thing, and if there's a way to destroy the darkness, well... Least I can do is walk with you.

I said I'd walk with you, didn't I? I promised."

Josh let out an exasperated sigh and shook his head at that.

"Of course you would say that" He remarked. "I guess here's another question... What exactly do you have in regards to goals that don't involve Gerwald and Katrine, or hardening your heart and such?" Josh would ask. It was an interesting question, what exactly was Scherezade doing besides getting plastered? What was her end goal? What was her plan? What was she wanting to do for the future?

"What plans do you have for your future, you know?"

He noted what she said about the kind of person that she was. He nodded his head in turn, looking back to Jason for a moment as he would continue trying to imitate a dog and making shadow puppets. "Jason? Since the nice lady is settled in, why don't we eat?" He asked him, who had suddenly perked up and darted his head right at Josh when he heard the word "eat". "Okay!" Jason chirped as Josh would smile and begin organizing the food so Jason would be able to eat safely.

"Might be" Josh spoke absentmindedly toward the bit about children possibly learning faster, as he finished doing so. Once he did, it was clear to go and Jason would immediately grab the closest thing that looked delectable to him (As Josh predicted he would) and begin to stuff himself. Josh chuckled a bit as he picked up a bit of food.

"Me? I'm a father. I think that's the most important thing about me" Josh spoke toward Seo as he would take a bite, nodding his head in approval.

Josh noticed the change as this went on. As Jason would try to imitate the barking - it took a few tries - the child would manage out a "Woof!" which got a laugh out of his father. As Jason busied himself with imitating dogs, Josh would listen as Seo would note that Jason had learned quickly, and could be pretty good as an imitator.

"He tends to mimic me constantly, so I'm not surprised about that" Josh would admit with a light chuckle. "I'm happy with whatever career path he'd like to take, but learning skills isn't a bad idea. It's cool that he's got something he can pick up quickly."

He nodded his head when she spoke to have lunch first. "Of course" Josh answered. "Like I said, we have too much anyway, feel free to join us with what we have."

She didn’t even deny that she would. The fact she didn’t answer and had moved on had concerned him too. Either she was still thinking on it, or she just flat out didn’t care about harming kids. He watched her eyes, looking for even some sort of empathy in regards to the example of children, but he found nothing. It was a harsh reminder of what he was dealing with that he had hoped he would not have. And a reminder to remain on guard. He hoped she was better than that. He hoped.

“By what you’ve told me... Yes” He spoke in regards to her question as he tried to push his thoughts aside for now. “You are still you. Broken but still you. By what I have seen, deep down.. I think you still yearn to be loved. I think you still yearn to have those wide, curious eyes and to be able to see all of and appreciate the world around you. But you fear that the world will bite. You fear that people will bite. Your closest betrayed you. It’s not an unreasonable result for you to be like that.”

Of course she would say that, he was pretty sure this wasn’t the first time they had discussed this either. Josh let out a sigh. Scherezade would not like what he was about to say. But she needed to hear it. This endeavour for a stony heart, this darkness sword thing... These things held her back from recovering.

“Well, you could. But considering how you seem to have been prior to the darkness, and how you are now... You wouldn’t be Scherezade anymore if you did” He spoke. When Josh needed to be, he was blunt, no playing around, he didn’t shrink from the truth or dance around it.

“You would just be a cold, unfeeling monster.”

He shrugged his shoulders.

“I hear they make good Sith though. Especially when they’re torturing children. Need a good old hardened heart to drown out their little kid screams. Takes an unfeeling monster to drown out a child’s panicked and pained screams for their parent, doesn’t it? To do those kinds of things without care? But I suppose that’s what happens when you don’t really have a heart anymore... Maybe you won’t even realize it’s wrong anymore when you’re doing it.”

Josh would let this go. She'd at least earned the right to try. He was close enough to intervene if there was a trick to it. Not that he thought she would with the Silver Jedi all around. Maybe that was part of why he was so relaxed? He knew that it wasn't likely that Jason would come to harm here.

Jason would tilt his head as Seo would show him how to make the shape of his hands into that of a doggy. It didn't look perfect, but Jason seemed to recognize it. "It's a doggy, daddy!" Jason cried out toward his father, and Josh had to keep from snort laughing. "I can see that, Jason!"

Jason would sit down and start to busy himself with making shadow doggies as Josh would nod his head when she responded to the swimming comment. "That can be done."

"No, you're right. But it's still better than nothing" He pointed out. "Which is exactly what you've implied you've had."

He listened as she would explain that she didn't exactly want to die, just wanted the pain to stop. He puzzled over it a moment, though smiled lightly when she would admit she might just be being a little bit melodramatic. "You might be a little" He teased in turn. But it was a serious concern. She wasn't eating, she was going to die if this kept up. And it was all Gerwald's fault. Well that and the fact that she was the absolute worst at getting over breakups. Like, more than the worst.

"I have a question" He would remark. "Do you ever think of how to keep this whole Gerwald thing from consuming you anymore? Because it's literally keeping you from eating" He pointed out rather bluntly. That was the brass tacks of it, wasn't it? She wasn't eating because of Gerwald. And these memories. "So we've now reached a point of this being life-threatening. I can't even erase the memories, even if I wanted to. Those are too ingrained in you by now. It'd cause too much damage. So those memories are stuck.

I want you to think long and hard on this. What is going to make this end, besides you dying? I can't answer that for you. Nobody can but you. Look deep in yourself, look down to the bottom of your heart, and tell me what you think will stop this? I will help you in any way that I reasonably can. Maybe a bit unreasonably, I think I've already gone beyond that border."

And there it was. Back to Gerwald again. Josh didn’t know where to begin with this. But he did know that yes, it was stupid. She stopped him before he could say it. But he had something else in mind.

“So you’ve not eaten since when you were on my ship” He observed aloud, mulling it over a moment.

“You’ll die eventually, you know that, right?”

He let that question hang for a moment before he spoke again.

“And that’s what you want, isn’t it?”

He knew she was more likely to betray him than the other way around, Sith or not. She hadn’t exactly been the nicest to him, she had even said it herself. And he still didn’t know if she’d cared much, seeing as the only sign of her possibly doing so was marred in her being incredibly passive aggressive instead of an admission.

She admitted she hadn’t eaten. He didn’t know how he hadn’t noticed sooner but the more he looked her up and down the more obvious it became it had been a long time.

“Why?”

He would never betray her, and she had to know this deep down. He would stop to stare at her though when she would "declare her intentions", and let out a sigh. Shaking his head, he did have something to say.

"Betrayal isn't my thing" He spoke flatly. "You can spout "But Gerwald and Katrine tho!" all you want, but that's not who I am" Josh remarked, looking her dead in the eyes. He wasn't happy with her. While he understood where she was coming from, this wasn't the first time she had claimed he would betray her. It was starting to get on his nerves, when he had done nothing but show support and trust in her. But there was something she had forgotten too.

"And if you do betray me..." He would suddenly begin, his eyes piercing toward hers. If she was going to do this with him... "Do not mistake my compassion for weakness."

Notably he had worded it as "if you betray me" and not "should you attack me". It was him reaffirming it would be the other way around if anything. But it was also a reminder of who and what he was, and the fact that he wouldn't go down if she did betray him. It was a warning not to cross him, nor the people he cared about.

He had already said what would happen if someone forced his hand.

With that, he would take a breath and change the subject, deciding he'd had enough of this.

"Have you not eaten?" He asked.

Josh wished that he could make this better somehow, make her smile... But then again, she hadn't truly smiled, or laughed or anything of the sort since they had met. Also weirdly enough, he noted that she hadn't ate anything from the basket since he got here. Despite that, she looked malnourished and pale, and he couldn't help but give her a sideways glance, looking her up and down when he realized it, a bit confused. You'd think she would have gobbled everything from the basket up. And he wouldn't have minded if she had. Did she trust him that little? Of course she did, what was he thinking? He wanted to call this all out, but she was already mad at him right now to begin with, so he couldn't really...

Ugh.

"I'm sorry" He repeated again, hating the silence between them as he stared out at the lake awkwardly.

He didn't say anything. He just looked away and stared out at the lake. How could he answer? What could he say? Anything he had said he'd do, or anything he had promised, he had done. But this was not something that he could help. It had just happened! He couldn't control it, he couldn't pretend that he never cared. She knew already that he was a terrible liar, and couldn't pretend he didn't if he wanted to. He considered over and over how to make this better, but he just didn't know.

He picked up a pebble again and sent it skipping over the lake with a bit more aggressiveness this time. He didn't say anything to her for he did not know what to say, he just let it sail.

"Probably some army of light prack" He cussed, shaking his head and laughing a bit. "Those sods aren't even Jedi. Their philosophy got into the Galactic Republic with Selena Halcyon, and well... Now you know why I'm not Grandmaster anymore. I didn't share that same philosophy. Last I heard of them before they folded, they put out a "kill on sight" order for any person that practices the dark side. Jedi? Bullchit. They're no better than the actual Sith monsters. Not counting you, you're not a monster or I'd have done something by now" He pointed out. "My job... Is to protect people. You've not given me a reason yet, name aside, to consider you someone that I need to protect people from. And name isn't enough."

Perhaps he would ask the CIS for her records, just to see if he was right. Something he could note to her later that she really did not fit the bill of the monsters that the old Army Of Light folks likethat one guy thought she was. Or maybe she would turn out to be one? Honestly he didn't think that would be the case. But it was always a possibility. If she was... Well, he'd figure something out. Even if she was, she didn't seem beyond redemption yet, right? It could be wishful thinking but he didn't get the impression that it was too late for Scherezade.

She seemed upset at him for calling her a friend. She shook her head at him, glared at him, didn't seem happy with him at the least. He just looked away.

"Sorry."

#1824138 Scherezade Had a Thousand Tales, and This One Might Be about Betrayal

Josh had changed in the years since, he'd spent a lot of time training his body, to the point that he was now the person people went to in regards to melee combat. He didn't need the Force to fight anymore, he was a living weapon all on his own. But that was definitely the event that prompted it. And he continued training his body. He knew several martial arts, and was working on the Echani style to honour his fallen mother who had been Echani. Suppose that made him half-Echani himself, as well. His body was a weapon, and as Scherezade had drunkenly somewhat seen at Zeltros, he knew how to use it without ever igniting his lightsaber or using the Force.

"It can be" He said. "I agree on that. Then again, it's also hard to gauge if someone is capable of reform. If we're made judge, jury and executioner, then we may be robbing someone of a chance that they may have actually taken" Josh would explain. "It's why I tend to spare criminals, and even Sith, if I can. I usually only kill if my hand is forced. Slavers though... I think I'd expect a Sith to reform before them. It's not a hard rule that you aren't supposed to kill, but it's frowned on for sure. It's also possible they think getting a taste for blood might make you like it too much, and give in to the darkness. Which... Is also, admittedly, valid. Corruption can happen to the best of us."

Josh shrugged again. "There's points to both sides of the argument. For me... I won't go out of my way to kill them, out of respect for tradition. If they feel that it's for my best interests and the best way for me to keep myself in check? That's cool. They're far less strict than the Order I was in before this, after all. So if they have limitations, I'll respect them as they have been nothing but kind and understanding to me. But for slavers, while I won't kill them needlessly... If someone else kills them or they're killed by accident... Eh. If it wasn't me who did it, then I'll sleep at night just fine."

"Hmm" He mused aloud when she would note her backpay was on record. "Don't know what to tell you. Guess you could check, and if they still haven't paid you, do something about it. They can't exactly starve you. And you don't seem to be averse to a "do something about it" stance to things, that's for sure."

When she said she didn't understand why, he smiled lightly. "You're my friend. And you're certainly nicer than people who've claimed to be my friend or someone I can trust in the past" He joked. She didn't understand why he cared though, she said. Especially when she told him not to. He frowned at that and for a moment didn't meet her eyes. He knew he had defied her. She had told him not to care for her. She'd told him not to love her, as well. Had he defied that too? Sometimes he wasn't sure himself. But he would look her in the eyes again after a few moments.

"You don't need a reason to care about someone. Sometimes it just comes natural between you."
