Seated on an austere command chair with his spine as straight as the back of a blade and his shoulders severe, Har’xa Escala beheld the bridge of the vessel he commanded.

His officers continued to speak in low muted tones, standing before the hololithic figure of Admiral Verasx that was projected alongside the topography of the surface of Kiros and the array of vessels that belonged to Task Group Agamemnon in the orbit above it. The admiral had already conversed with his peer moments ago and the other was merely in a discourse with his rest of his officers to disseminate further information so that they were informed before they reverted from hyperspace.

From the reports he has read and the continuous updates that streamed across his dataslate since the Wyvern has set down on Kiros, everything seemed to be going accordingly.

Well, if one only took into consideration the naval half of the plans.

Even then, it was a matter of the ground forces needing more time to forge onwards, rather than any true opposition. Har’xa leaned back against the back of his seat, closing his eyes for a moment as he mentally began to list some considerations he had in mind for the system when they arrive.

I still cannot fathom how you can stomach those vile things,” Har’xa replied in a flat tone, narrowing his eyes at his heir. “All I can taste is weeks old oil and salt. And do not get me started on the texture of those bars! I think there are plastifoam out there that are easier to bite through than them,” he ended his faux tirade with knowing tilt of his head at Lin and a small amused grin playing at a corner of his mouth. It was a tradition between father and son that spanned decades, and their little retorts never failed to make the worries he held within him settle.

Feeling more calm when it came to his youngest, the older male took another sip of his tea before he moved on to their next topic of conversation. While it was a matter that still prickled at his whole being, Har’xa was not a person who avoided speaking of something unpleasant just because he wanted something to be otherwise. “At this point? Only remnants remain,” the dark haired male spoke in a dismissive tone. Truly, for one who claimed that they were at the apex of military might and technological advancement, it was disappointing that they fell overnight.

Kou was just beginning to settle back into life within the family when news of their Grand Moff’s sacrifice was reported on the holonet.” While Har’xa did not feel anything in particular for the late Natasi Fortan, it annoyed him that she commanded such devotion from his own flesh and blood. More so when he was left to simmer in his own dark thoughts and allowed to deteriorate until he was barely sleeping. To the Epicanthix, she did not deserve his son’s loyalty and respect.

He feels that he should have been there despite knowing that it is a futile battle,” he continued to speak calmly, carefully not allowing his displeasure at the thought to leak through his voice. “Sula is worried that he will regress to how he was after his first major conflict over Skor II, so she is determined to stay by his side and distract him from his thoughts. But I feel that after several weeks of listening to both me and your mother, Kou is beginning to chafe.

Your mother is doing well and has been holding up admirably, my decision to move the clan to the Core notwithstanding.” While Sula continued to tease him cheerfully about the sudden affliction of his midlife crisis every now and then, she had been purely supportive. “And I will. She will undoubtedly be ecstatic to hear that you will be coming home for a visit and will no doubt spoil you terribly,” Har’xa said with a hint of wry amusement colouring his tone.

As his heir’s finger lengthened and turned dark to stir the cup of tea before him, the older male shook his head faintly with a soft ‘tsk’. “This place has perfectly acceptable silverware for your convenience. One would think you have lost your manners and turned into a savage in the short time you have left home,” he chastised, picking up his own steaming cup to take a sip of the fragrant tea. Despite the nature of his words, it was said in a teasing manner, for Har’xa knew Lin did it on purpose to elicit a reaction out of him.

I am glad as ever to hear that your endeavours have been successful. And while I would like to heard more about your future plans and directions, perhaps it would be better if we return to the matter when you are home and we can speak at our leisure.” Despite his usually stoic demeanour, the Admiral was still first and foremost a father, and he missed spending time with his children.

Life… is what it is,” he said, waving his hand carelessly in the air in an act that was usually unlike the formal male. “The ponderous nature of bureaucracy is neverending, but I am slowly adapting back into my previous role. Kou, however, has been his usual stubborn self.” The slight stress in his tone elucidated what Har’xa thought of his youngest son’s tantrum. “He has been nothing but frustrating, and it is beginning to affect Sula. Perhaps it would do him some good if you were to speak to him when you are home.

The most discreet of motions that he caught out of the corner of his eyes was enough for the older male to know that his son has arrived for their appointment. While the other was delayed, Har’xa has been kept updated on his schedule and knew that Lin’yao was headed for La Primavera straight after he has arrived at the starport. It was due to the knowledge of his circumstances that the Admiral allowed his heir to be seated with nary a chastisement.

Instead, the Epicanthix took the opportunity to study the features and form of his firstborn, a father’s concern for his children surging up. After all, exchanging words through a holoprojector only allowed him limited assessment of the other’s wellbeing. And while he had made a mistake of letting his youngest to neglect his own health and deteriorate until he was but a mere shadow of himself, Har’xa does not commit the same mistake twice.

After a moment of silence, the older male inclined his head in acknowledgement of his scion’s greeting. “Greetings, my son. I’m as well as I can be.” Here, he gave his son a faint smile, deciding to continue along with the lines of pleasantries before they eventually moved on towards more… disagreeable matters. “Your mother sends her love and regards,” Har’xa paused for a moment, pushing a delicately wrapped box across the table towards his son.

She is doing well, but she misses you and has asked me to pass you some homemade treats she had made especially for you.” With Sula worrying over Kou and his willful stubbornness, she had declined to accompany him even though she desired to fuss over Lin. While most of his anger has burned out and only the embers of it remained, his youngest son was still simmering in his frustration. “She will be pleased to know that you look to be in excellent health.

Har’xa leaned forward, his movements graceful as he poured a cup of tea for his son, making a small gesture for the other partake in it before they continued to speak. “And we do. I hope you have been well on your end?

The evergreen world of Chandrila was peaceful, and its weather temperate. One Har’xa Escala sat by the terrace, enjoying the warmth of the sun on his skin. Life has been hectic ever since he had made the decision to return to his previous position in the Imperial Confederation. There had been much to do, between his duties as Head of House Escala and his reinstated position as Fleet Admiral.

Even now, as he sat here in the quiet serenity of the famed Skygarden with a pot of fragrant tea set before him, there was still work to be done. While it required his attention, it was not so urgent that the older male could not afford to set aside some time for his eldest. After all, the other had left home for quite some time, and while Har’xa was content to know that his son was doing well, it would ease a lot of concerns that he had to be able to see Lin’yao in person.

It was just unfortunate that Sula was unable to leave Anaxes and accompany him for this trip, for she continued to fret over their youngest. She would have enjoyed seeing him for herself and making sure he’s fine for herself as well. The Epicanthix leaned back against the leather settee, his eyes drifting over the beautiful garden once more as he continued to wait for his heir.

And before the Admiral could hear the young woman’s answer, a sudden yelp of surprise broke their hushed conversation. Immediately, each and every member of the survey vessel fell into high alert as they realised it was their first encounter with the opposition. Har’xa himself prepared for the appearances of more foes, now that they have been alerted to their presences.

While he had not been given a choice this time, it did not stop the embers of his annoyance from flaring into flames of resentment. It had been two, almost three decades since Har’xa has found himself involved in such a messy… conflict. Despite his heritage, and his wife’s insistence that he continued to sharpen and hone his skills in the art of Teräs Käsi, the older male much preferred to conduct his warfare in the vast expanse of space.

As the young woman moved to take cover at one of the twists and turns that were dug into the trenches, the Admiral and the rest of their group did the same, each of them moving and taking the most advantageous positions they could in preparation for contact. When Alucard lashed out at the first foe in a preemptive strike, the Epicanthix found himself admiring her resolve and swiftness.

It was clear from her ruthless action as she dispatched the enemy soldier that she held no illusions that they were in the midst of a battle. While it was something Har’xa has always lamented, most beings who served exclusively in the navy had the tendency to hesitate when they were confronted with hostilities. And perhaps, he would be one of them as well, if not for the fact that he was expected to serve on the frontlines of a ground warfare as befitting his position as Head of House Escala and Grand Margrave if the situation demanded it of him.

As the blonde moved to intercept the third foe that was moving in to reinforce and advance their line, the Epicanthix lunged forward, the swiftness of his movement belying his mass. With a firm stomp on the spine of the second soldier to incapacitate him, the male pulled out his own blaster pistol, firing a shot to the back of his head.

Behind them, the rest of their ragged crew was beginning to push forward, in hopes of repelling the opposition, and hopefully push forward further down the line until their technicians managed to contact the nearest ground command. It was then that laser fire began to soar high above them, and the distant cries of renewed vigour began to resound in the air.

Was the tide of the battle beginning to turn?

While his own hope grew, Har’xa knew they were still a distance away. But anything that increased morale would only aid them in surviving the remaining stretch.

Let us continue to be careful as we advance. Do not rush ahead.

With a cautionary reminder to his subordinates, the brunet rejoined the fray.

Standing within each other’s vicinity in the harsh environment of the polar region, both Har’xa Escala and the young lady he had assigned as part of his team were as mismatched as they came. As an Epicanthix, his dimensions were an outlier, and the only equipment that came close to fitting him well were the winter gear that he had brought aboard with him.

His protection only consisted of a helmet and a chestplate, and both were ill-fitting pieces that compressed against his temples and the bruises that he had acquired during their untimely landing. And if it was not for the fact that it would be exceedingly foolish to wander into a conflict zone without any protection, the Admiral would have declined such restrictive gear. He made a silent promise to himself that he would be travelling everywhere, even if it was a short transfer, with a case containing equipment that actually fitted him in the future.

Other than the howling winds and the sound of battle in the distance, it was quiet. But with the crash of the survey vessel, all the officers and crew aboard knew it was just a matter of time before they encountered opportunists from the opposition. The first few teams moved out into the trench to secure their exit point, their movements cautious and weapons raised at ready.

As our best chances is to rejoin the main army at the frontlines, we will proceed onwards carefully. Expect battle, and give no quarter to any who is not dressed in our colours. In case we are separated, you are to follow the orders and directions of the most senior officers in your team.

It was with much displeasure to his already wretched day that the older Escala realised that standing at his full height meant that he was exposed. Or rather, his chest, shoulders, and head were exposed, peeking well past the edge of the trench. Some of the taller men and women were advancing with their back stooped, but with his remarkable height, the act was more awkward for the Epicanthix to emulate.

Taking a deep breathe through his nose, and exhaling it sharply out of his mouth, Har’xa joined his colleagues with his own blaster pistol in hand. His back bowed low, hunched until his body almost bent in half as they made their way carefully into the maze of trenches, using the sounds of explosions and lasers to guide their path.

He gave the Wing Commander an approving nod at her vigilance, “Alucard, while I know you are an experienced officer and pilot, do you have any experience with ground melee?” She was both calm and alert, seemingly prepared for whatever fate saw fit to throw in their path.

Confident that Corvus would be able to accommodate the additional request without any difficulty on his part, the Epicanthix was content to allow his guard the autonomy to decide on the measures he wished to take so long as it did not cause any disorder.

When the unknown figure that has shadowed the Imperator parted ways, his figure was graced with a final suspicious glance from the older Escala. But he kept his silence this time, preferring to gather his thoughts and grant his focus to the meeting ahead.

He arrived near the end of their contingent, pausing before the tall doors to regard the other. “Corvus, this will probably take awhile. Most people gathered here are loyal to the regime, so you do not need to worry about the security while we are gathered in the Grand Temple. Please wait for me to return back on our ship.” While Corvus came highly recommended and was known to be discreet and steadfast, a mercenary’s first allegiance was to credits. And Har’xa would never allow for the mistake of giving his complete trust to an individual whose loyalty could be bought.

Expecting that his orders will be followed without a word of protest, the tall male waited until he saw the form of his guard disappearing amongst the crowd. Satisfied, he turned and entered the meeting room, where the officers were gathered for a more intimate session before the main event.

Taking a seat like the rest of his colleagues, the Epicanthix gave the words uttered by the High Chancellor his full consideration. And by the end of his address, a slow smile found its way to his usually impassive features.

The first warning from Alucard went unheeded as the Admiral stood in all his imperious glory to glower in the direction of the Captain. While Har’xa appreciated her concerns, his mood was swiftly deteriorating and he wanted to know what was their plan of action.

And then, the second and third warning came from their pilot and co-pilot came through the system. A scowl found its way to his features when it became clear that there was no way of remaining airborne.

Not bothering to say another word to the panicking Captain, the older Escala stalked towards the direction of the young Wing Commander, his steps steady and sure even as the hull of the vessel began to shudder violently as it continued on the path of its unplanned descend. “Thank you, Alucard,” he stated curtly, his annoyance at the alteration to his schedule and the inconvenience of the journey back to Base Senth seeping into his tone.

With the halting movements of a person who has not needed to deal with such contraptions, Har’xa secured himself into the harness, pulling at the ends of the straps to ensure that laid firmly over this shoulders and torso. Then, there was only the waiting.

There was an edge of apprehension that found its way into his presence that the Epicanthix would never admit to as the vessel impacted with the ground, the violent lurch of an abrupt halt indicating that it has struck one of the naturally occuring seracs or one of the manmade crevices excavated by the opposition. It did not bode well for them, he thought, even as his body strained painfully against the safety restraints.

Ignoring the shouts of alarm and groans of pain of his subordinates, the tall male unlocked himself from his seat, his mind rapidly processing their situation as he got back on his feet carefully. There was some discomfort on the parts of his torso, but other than a faint sense of disorientation from their untimely crash, Har’xa pronounced himself fine.

He turned to regard his blonde subordinate, and after a moment’s thought, decided that there was no point in hiding the fact that they were in an untenable situation. “According to the last coordinates, we are supposed to be travelling at the edge of the conflict zone.” There was a pause in his words before he spoke up once more, “Get your injury seen to, Wing Commander. Or at least keep a stimpack of painkillers on your person.

Considering that the ship was dark and only the emergency systems remained live, he doubted that the communications system would work. He was proven right as the crews gathered themselves and started on their emergency protocols. As each called out their report, the news only grew grimmer and their options further decreased, until they were only looking at the only one that remained to them – to wander through the battlefield.

We have no choice but to make our way through the frontline.

With the blizzard closing in within hours, the extra time needed to skirt around the edges of the conflict zone held too much risk of them being stranded in a hostile environment without any shelter. The older Escala began giving out orders and organising them to gather and divide supplies and equipment, for the sooner they started, the better their chances were.

With grim determination, the members of the downed vessel were gathered at the exit, all of them dressed in winter gear and carried a firearm on their person. While they did not specialise in fighting a ground battle, they received basic training in the case of emergencies and knew how to conduct themselves. With a sweeping glance, Har’xa gave them a nod and signalled for the first group to move out.

You are with me, Alucard.

The older male was about to turn back his attention to the viewport when the petite young woman appeared once again at the edge of his vision. He listened quietly to her words, finding himself agreeing with them, the faintest hint of a smile appearing at the corners of his mouth and the crinkes

Har’xa himself also preferred the traversing through the void of darkness and stars. There was a serenity to it that he had missed, especially since he had spent the last few years of his early retirement on the surface of his homeworld. While he worn the mantle of Clan Head and Grand Margrave with his usual focus and determination, now that he was given another opportunity to return to his former position, the Epicanthix found that he had missed standing at the helm of a star destroyer.

Perhaps, he conceded, his own love for space was the reason why he had allowed Kou’ha to leave the safety of the Clan and to enroll in the First Imperial Navy.

I concur. It is always best to be prepared for any situation that may arise.” The older male turned his form to better regard the Wing Commander. “The more challenging the trials and training you undergo, the more prepared you will be. But it is rare for someone as young as yourself to speak of such observations.” His youngest certainly did not, until he found himself burned by the bitter loss in Skor II. As a father, it was a lesson Har’xa had not wanted for his son to learn so soon in his life. But he also knew that his son was resilient, and when he managed to find his path once more, he will be much stronger for it.

It was then that the an explosion hit the survey vessel, sending most of the people within its frame sprawling to the durasteel floor. With a soft curse in his native language, Har’xa found himself sharing the same fate as his subordinates, his shoulder slamming hard against the viewport he was standing beside, before he managed to catch his balance and stop himself from completely falling over.

Captain, I want a report now,” the Admiral demanded, his voice chilly in his displeasure.

It was with narrowed eyes that the noble stood before the viewport of the survey vessel he found himself on. Spread out before his gaze was a vista of immaculate white.

Resting lightly by his thigh, his right index finger twitched faintly, the only hint of annoyance that the older Escala allowed himself to indulge in. To the rest of the officers and crew that accompanied him, the tall male appeared to be his usual calm and stoic self.

With the limited vision caused by heavy snowfall, the vessel was reliant on its sensors to advance through the treacherous zone. Even then, as the weather continued to deteriorate, the accuracy of its sensors will be compromised. But the Epicanthix was not about to let the scouts and pilots assigned to the stations be stranded, especially not when the reports from his battlegroup confirmed that the conditions will only worsen in the next hour. There was also a very real risk that the remnants of the opposition would scatter to the winds if they were about to lose and attempt to overtake the stations to protect themselves from the blizzard.

Perhaps someone of his rank and stature could have left this job to one of his many aides, but considering he was also en route to the base camp located at the edge of the region, it did not make sense for him to expend twice the resources when he was perfectly fine with being slightly delayed by a few detours. Just two more stations, and then they can retreat from this thoroughly unpleasant wasteland.

As the vessel began to lift, the click of a new set of footsteps against the durasteel panels caught his hearing. Har’xa Escala turned to regard the officer standing before him. Unlike his youngest son, the Admiral was more severe in demeanour, and sparks of his rare humour hidden from all except those closest to him. He waited for a moment after the young woman own greetings before he returned it, his own salute precise. “Welcome aboard, Wing Commander Alucard. Please feel free to make use of what little amenities that is available on the vessel. We have two other stops before we journey back to Base Senth.

Less than ten minutes in, and discontentment was already brewing.

How droll.

It was good to know that everyone still possessed a fire within their soul. Because they will need the resolve and tenacity if they were to reform. And a small amount of disagreement and competition has never hurt anyone.

While the presence of the armoured male beside the imperator was suspect, Har’xa was willing to extend a small amount of goodwill to the other. But he definitely did not trust him, not just yet. Keeping his features impassive as the contingent began to move towards the temple, the Epicanthix gave a twitch of his index and middle finger as a silent signal for Corvus to draw close to his side.

When the mercenary entered within hearing range, the brunette leaned down slightly, his lips barely moving as he spoke. “I want you to keep a close eye on the man that is accompanying the Imperator.” His dark eyes moved from Corvus to the unknown figure to indicate exactly who it was that Har’xa was referring to. “If anything happens, my safety comes second.

While his keen eyes continued to sweep through the area, pausing and alighting on a familiar form every once in awhile, Har’xa allowed his mind to meander. His thoughts went first and foremost to his dominion on Bunduki, where his clan and family members resided. He knew that they would follow his lead if he decided to shed the mantle of Grand Margrave and retake his position as Fleet Admiral, even if it meant leaving behind their home and abandoning their world.

His true worry, however, rested on his youngest.

Despite his disapproval, he had allowed Kou’ha to carve his own path. But perhaps, he has indulged his son for far too long. For while he remained proud of him for his achievements, Har’xa felt that his son has been given far too much responsibilities given his inexperience and was thrown into a battle he was not prepared for. Despite his stoic silence, he noticed the stark difference in his scion when he had returned to Bunduki for a visit. Even with him standing here on the soil of Byss, his wife and his remaining sons were probably trying to talk sense into his youngest. No longer will Clan Escala allow one of theirs to be so neglected.

The hushed whispers that has been drifting even to the inconspicuous corner he was secreted in fell into revered silence. Taking his cue, the Epicanthix stepped out into the area, a mere face in the sea of people. Standing taller than most people, it made it even easier for his dark eyes to alight on the charismatic figure that stood before them. He inclined his head out of curiousity, as it did not escape his notice that the man he once served looked much younger and filled with vitality. It was clear that something has happened, but whether the Imperator would be willing to satisfy their unvoiced queries… Now, that was another matter.

Har’xa remained a distance away, but still close enough to listen to the condensed report that was being delivered by Morcus, mentally taking notes and filling in the gaps in his own understanding.
