Yours is a restless life, and never shall you know peace, though you shall be blessed for the peace that you bring to others. Take comfort in the fact that, though you stand tall and alone, others take shelter in the shadow that you cast. - Luke Skywalker

"I love you."

Every single night, these words haunted her in her dreams. The images, the emotions, and the incredible pain were all so vivid that it felt like she was reliving that nightmare over and over again. A Jedi's life was one of commitment and self-sacrifice, and by committing to that path, you accepted the risk of losing everything. But accepting what could be doesn't ease the pain when it all falls apart in the end. Now she sat alone in bed every night without the comfort she often relied on to keep up with her already challenging life, and all she could do was wonder if things could have been different.

What would have happened if she just hadn't accepted this one mission? Would she still be able to turn her eyes to the side and watch him sleep beside her? It was a depressing spiral of thoughts she tried so hard to avoid but just couldn't. Kahlil Noble had helped her get through some of the most difficult times in her life, he was a source of love and comfort, and together they had started a family.

Life just isn't the same without him.

But life must also move forward, and giving up on everything over this incredibly painful loss wouldn't honor the sacrifice he made. He wanted her to keep going, for him, for the people who take shelter in the shadow she casts, and for their daughter Vera.

"Mommy?" the little 5-year-old hybrid asked, as she stepped into the room and looked at her crying mother while her own tears filled her eyes.

"What's wrong, sweetie?" Valery asked while she held out her arms and picked Vera up to gently place her down in her lap.

"I can't sleep."

"I can't either," she said, her arms wrapping around her. "But everything will be alright. He'll always be with us."
