I will be using this thread to expand upon the idea of Hyper-Rapture and its effects on characters. There was not a Codex format that I felt fit with what I am wanting to write, so that is why I am doing it here.
Hyper-Rapture, as defined from Wookieepedia and Legends content, is a "supposed form of madness acquired from staring into hyperspace for a prolonged time." The only Canon definition that we have of Hyper-Rapture falls under Lightspeed Psychosis, which was described as a "mental condition related to hyperspace." There are four total texts that use Hyper-Rapture, with three being Legend and only one being Canon. So, there is not a lot of material to work with.
When I first explored the idea of Hyper-Rapture, it was when I was working on the Ring of the Rapture for a Codex competition. At the time I had maybe read the Wookieepedia article once or twice. I enjoyed Purrgils when watching Star Wars Rebels, so I knew that I wanted to include them in that submission. Mixing the two of them together, I wrote that when one was to stare into hyperspace for long enough, the effects of Hyper-Rapture would start to set in, and the victim would receive visions of the "Purrgil home-system." Granted I should have expanded on this A LOT more initially, but I left the submission how it was. Fast forward to over a year later and Ahsoka is released. Purrgils were one of the key focuses in the show in terms of how to get to Peridea. I knew from then that I wanted to expand on the idea of Hyper-Rapture more and what it could do.
And that leads me to here, with the start of my "Hyper-Rapture Project." A plan to help expand and redefine on a plethora of Star Wars items regarding hyperspace.
All of the stuff that I am talking about in here will be based upon eventual Codex approval, so I will come back and update this as time goes on.
The overarching theme of this expansion is that the Celestials are the original creators of hyperspace. That is going to be the basis of all of this lore that I am writing. Though I still have yet to play the SW KOTOR games, I'm using the works of Wookieepedia to help build on my ideas. From what I read, the Rakata, Gree, and Killik were all species that served the Celestials in one way or another. The Gree and Killik had developed forms of hyperspace travel on their own, while the Rakatans were granted the ability to travel the stars through the Kwa using Force-drives.
During this same time (again, all from what I've read on Wookieepedia) Abeloth is created from drinking out of the Pool of Knowledge. This left her corrupted and ultimately abandoned by the Celestials on Abeloth's planet. Now imprisoned there, she has no way to escape the world. But to ensure this, guards needed to be created to monitor the surrounding space. That is where the Purrgils come in. These space-faring creatures were born from the stars and granted force sensitivity by the Celestials. These magnificent creatures were able to travel through hyperspace, along with the ability to navigate the dangerous Maw where Abeloth's planet now resided. Celestials entrusting them with protecting the planet, both from Abeloth from escaping and from anyone trying to access the world.
Sometime near Abeloth's imprisonment, the Rakata decided to rebel against the Celestials, go on to conquer a major chunk of the galaxy. The Force-drives became corrupted with their dark side energy, fueling their conquest. Realizing the threat that the Rakatans now posed, the Celestials started to divert some of the Purrgils to track down Rakatan warships, destroying them and stopping their reign of terror. But since their numbers were spreading thin, Abeloth's world started to become less secure. She was able to send a message through the Force out to the galaxy, calling for anyone to come in rescue her. In reality, she wanted to possess and control whoever decided to visit her planet.
One of the groups to receive this message was the Rakatans. They had heard tales of Abeloth and how she rebelled against the Celestials. If they were able to control her and conquer her powers, their Force-drives would become unstoppable. This also meant that they had a chance of using her to fight the Celestials, taking them over as well. A large chunk of their forces was sent to try and find the planet. The Purrgils did all that they could to try and stop them, but ultimately the planet was discovered. A large battle broke out between Abeloth, the Rakatans, and the Purrgils, with Abeloth ultimately winning. All the Rakatans were defeated and imprisoned on the world, now servants to Abeloth. The surviving Purrgil retreated, returning to the Celestials to try and recover.
How does this all relate back to Hyper-Rapture? Well, part of the Celestials efforts in order to hide the planet was to create a large Maw surrounding Abeloth's planet. The only way to reach this world was through hyperspace, specifically by following the Purrgil's path into the plethora of black holes shrouding the system. Since the journey was dangerous, travelers had to enter hyperspace early and stay in it for the entire journey until they were right at the planet. Before large studies of hyperspace travel were completed, many spacers stared directly out of their viewports to ensure that their ship would not hit anything. Staring into the blue and white swirl for extended periods led initially to headaches and feeling and nausea. But those who were able to endure this were soon granted visions and hallucinations. Those who were able to view these visions (typically those strong in the Force) were shown the pathway to Abeloth's world.
Again, since I am saying that Celestials were the ones to create hyperspace travel, they would have done so on Abeloth's world (their original home planet.) Now that they have abandoned the world and moved to Mortis, the only inhabitant of their former home is Abeloth. But the Force power needed to create this way of travel still radiates from there. So, the visions which people saw showed them how to find where hyperspace originated from. But madness usually set in with those seeing the visions because many were not strong enough to comprehend what they were actually seeing.
The Followers of the Rapture are a group that I created who are obsessed with finding the secrets of Hyper-Rapture. Originally, I wrote them as wanting to find the "home system of the Purrgils." Now, I am shifting it to where they are trying to find this mysterious world (Abeloth's planet) and unlock the secrets of it. As far as the galaxy knows, Abeloth was killed around 40ABY. But for this lore, I am writing that she is still alive and building up her strength once more. Her call has been sent out to the stars in order to find Force-sensitive individuals to grow her power. The Followers of the Rapture do not know that she is still alive, or that the visions they are seeing lead to her world. The are simply obsessed with finding this location that plagues their hallucinations.
There is a whole lot of lore that I am wanting to create regarding Abeloth, Purrgils, Starweirds, hyperlanes, hyperspace, and a few more things that will all tie together. But for now, I wanted to just start with Hyper-Rapture and get my base thoughts down so I can build from there. I am really excited to share this with y'all, as it's something I have been wanting to write for a long time now.
If anyone has any thoughts/feedback/ideas about lore that I should incorporate, or things I should explore, please let me know. I want this project to include a bunch of Chaos lore and stories, making it something that the community can enjoy as a whole.
