Hello everyone! Welcome to another tutorial!
Here, I will discuss how Light Side Sith function in my stories.
I didn't just spin it all out of the blue...some of it came from the Legends version of this concept. A good chunk of it is my own creative License. I wanted to explore the idea, as I have seen other characters in places elsewhere present themselves as such but they really just came off as Jedi who didn't call themselves that. I wanted to see if I could make such a concept, and a character created around that concept genuinely dangerous and a threat to Jedi, while trying to answer why they are a threat and why they seem to be so few.
To that end , I have developed this guide on how they work and how to rp one in a way similar to how I approach it.
1. What the heck is a Light Sith?
A Light Sith is someone who has rejected the Dark Side, feeling it is too destructive, and feels Light Side Philosophy (Or rather, their take on it) is a better way to rule the Galaxy. They believe The Dark Side to be as foul and abhorrent as The Jedi, and refuse it. They sincerely believe they are a corrective Force in the Galaxy, and do not make war unless they genuinely feel there is no other choice
2. Why are they dangerous?
They may favor the Light Side, but they are still Sith. Favoring does not imply respect. As with all things Sith, Philosophy inevitably comes out more twisted than when it went in. In their case, they have learned to manipulate the Light Side to unnatural means, separating themselves from negative emotions, instead, focusing on the moment, on the sheer perceived necessity of twisting the Light to bring about order (especially Order in their favor) on the perceived necessity of correcting whatever problem they face, without hatred, greed, or malicious intent (This is more difficult for some Light Sith than others, as they might struggle constantly to maintain this discipline). Light Sith can occasionally display an amount of altruism, compassion, mercy, that would shock their Jedi Rivals, but this is always tempered by the sheer ruthless conviction they display in both their beliefs and actions to bring about their vision of the Galaxy. They perceive the Jedi's use of the Light as just as limiting as a Standard Sith, whereas their twisting of it allows them multiple advantages over Dark Adepts, manipulating the Light to cause them immense harm, or interfering with a Jedi's connection to the light
3. Why are there so few?
While not cruel to be cruel as other Sith are, their behavior can come off as a form of extreme black and white thinking, and result in great cruelty and suffering regardless of their personal intentions, simply because they are so committed to a vision of a Galaxy at Order. They can come off as exceptionally callous to the reasoning of others as to why their goals might actually be counter-productive, and the focus on the necessity of completing their goals can degenerate into an extreme monomania at completing their goal at all costs, perceiving others as misguided, even evil for standing in the way of them "correcting" the Galaxy's ills. This Monomania can lead to them doing things that look (and often are) increasingly outright insane should their goals be continually frustrated/thwarted. While they can come off as lucid, most times, anytime their goal becomes the topic, even their friends can detect the fanatical dedication to completing it. Using the Light in such an unnatural way leaves it's mark on the body and spirit, and it takes great self control for a Light Sith to avoid going insane like Darth Gravid did. They are much more susceptible to going insane without iron amounts of self control than even ordinary Sith. This insanity, if not treated or mitigated, eventually becomes crippling, leading to them making more mistakes. This is why there are few genuine Light Sith...they tend to become too insane to be effective if they lack self control (And even with the right amount of self control they struggle to keep their intent pure, as they are more tempted to slide fully to the Darkness than normal Jedi) or are killed by one side or the other once the nature of their aberration becomes known...they are often killed before getting far enough in their journey to truly pose a threat. Also, if their conviction is shattered, they can't manipulate the Force as well, and may cause a total mental breakdown
4. Characteristics
Light Sith enjoy many advantages over Dark Side Adepts, having learned to twist the Light in ways that make them able to inflict lethal injury on Dark Adepts. They also enjoy an immense Resistance to any form of Force Light due to their unique study (Though potentially not to other offensive Light Abilities)
Vaapaad is completely ineffective on them, as their philosophy does not rely inherently on channeling negative emotions for power, thus, leaving Nothing for Vaapaad's super-conducting loop to work from
They are capable of cutting off a Jedi's connection to the Light Side (but not the rest of The Force) temporarily, potentially heavily stunning or disorienting them
They can use the Force to heal others, and the healing effects are often much more powerful than that of an average Jedi healer. (They might not be as successful with other, Standard Light abilities though)
Masters of this path exhibit a Light Side Aura that will not arouse suspicions in other Light Siders so long as they do not engage in direct combat
They can lock their emotions away by Force of will to fight with a completely logical state of mind (this becomes more difficult to do over time if they are battling mental instability). But they are trained generally, to fight without negative emotions influencing them, and may have to actively work to avoid those emotions creeping into a fight, just like a Jedi has to.
5. Role Play Tips
Their position on what is good and what is evil may come off as highly esoteric on occasion. A Light Sith's morality may overlap at some points with that of a Jedi, but can be shockingly warped in small details.
They can be identified by color changes to their eye and veins, like other Sith. Unlike the red and sulphurous nature of normal Sith eyes and black of the veins, their mutated eyes have the whites colored bronze, the iris a dull, dark green, and their veins exhibit a green tinge
Their conviction is close to unshakable about a "Galaxy-Correcting goal" they have sworn themselves to. Simultaneously their greatest strength and weakness.
For all their ability to disrupt or interfere with a Jedi's connection to the Light, many of their Abilities simply cannot cause pain or harm to Light Adepts, forcing them to adopt an almost Jedi-Like approach to combating Jedi, or aggressive use of neutral powers or even Magic. Only an exceptionally talented and well trained Light Sith could devastate Jedi on a regular basis, if they have decided Jedi must be removed for their goals to be completed.
A Light Sith is much more predisposed to mercy or compassion, especially with allies, friends or lovers, and may indulge in Altruism just because they have an opportunity.
They must constantly struggle to keep from being consumed by their goal, and driven insane as a result. Signs of mental instability can veer (and switch regularly between) outright Mania to more subtle expressions of Fanaticism in conversing about their goals.
It's best to play them like a "Wild Card" in a deck. They might occasionally fight alongside the good guys, but that can change if they decide "The Good Guys" are part of the problem. They might be a deadly enemy in one battle, and a powerful ally in the next--and often with the same opponents in either context--depending on what they view as necessary to bringing order to the Galaxy or solving a problem that vexes them at that moment.
I'll be sure to jot down more IC, but for now, I hope this guide served as at least a decent primer. Hope to see you in rp!
