Aileni was a couple months old now, he had grown so much in such a short amount of time that Dreidi couldn’t keep up with the increases in his size, the addition of hair and he was slowly shifting to consuming his own food. It was mushy food but it was still food that did not come from her. That had been not something that she had been prepared for the change to happen as rapidly as it had. Though, Dreidi would often tell her mother that every change that Aileni went through was something that she felt woefully unprepared for.
Apparently that was the norm in parenthood and she would be terrified when Aileni started wanting to date. An idea that seemed so far off that it seemed ridiculous but also, all too close for Dreidi to laugh too much at the idea. Dreidi would not be able to handle Aileni wanting to date, she had no idea how she would cope with a teenager, or full grown adult son. It was tough enough to handle him as a growing baby.
Parenthood was something she realised was significantly more terrifying than fighting Sith.
There was one thing that lingered in the back of her mind. Due to the ordeal of adjusting to a newborn’s routine and getting Aileni settled on Dathomir, Dreidi hadn’t discussed with the Dathomiri Clan Mother on the spell that Dreidi had casted just before Aileni’s birth. It was something that pricked at the back of her mind since she knew there was going to be consequences, Dreidi could feel that in her bones. However, she didn’t have an idea of the cost that her protection would have.
She needed to meet with the elder witch and learn what could happen due to the spell that Dreidi had done out of her anxieties. From the limited research that Dreidi had done, she couldn’t see anything that would be a detriment to Aileni but it was also limited to the Dathomiri males who were significantly different species to Aileni. There was also the point that it was usually done to adults, not children. So Dreidi could not rely on those sources to reassure her anxieties that the spell would be completely safe.
Which was why Dreidi finally arranged a meeting with the Clan Mother who assisted Dreidi in her birthing. It was another witch that Dreidi trusted and it was someone who had been there and met Aileni. The Clan Mother knew the importance these questions would be to Dreidi and hopefully hold answers that could either alleviate her anxieties towards Aileni, or provide answers on how to avoid any negatives to her son.
Dreidi couldn’t allow her son to face consequences for her rash actions, it was unfair and all she had tried to do was keep him safe. All she ever wanted to do now was ensure the safety of her son.
Leaving her son to spend time with Jairdain and Grisial, Dreidi decided to have this meeting alone. It was the first time in a long time that Dreidi had gone anywhere alone. But this was something that Dreidi knew she needed to do alone and it was better if her animal companion was continuing to bond with Aileni instead of joining Dreidi in her anxieties.
The meeting point was an old village, one that had been abandoned for a while and there was a silence that hung heavy. Dreidi looked around and didn’t see the other witch, she moved around the village, taking in the history and everything that had been. The dust, the wind whistling through the buildings and the shattered pottery that crunched under her shoes as she walked. It was strange to pick this as a meeting point but Dreidi supposed that it was a neutral meeting ground and she was still earning the trust as an outsider. An outsider and a Jedi one at that. It was a tough bite for some to chew.
“I see you came, Dreidi.” A voice called from the air around Dreidi.
“I need answers. I told you before, I had made a mistake… a spell… I need to know the potential risks that I have caused my son.” Dreidi stated she wasn’t sure why she assumed it was a mistake but something inside Dreidi told her that she had made an error that day.
The witch formed in front of Dreidi, a weathered witch of years much older than Dreidi, how old Dreidi would never dare to guess. “You wished to protect him… You used a spell to protect him. Weaving Magick as a tool without knowing the cost it would take from you? I thought you were smarter than that, child.”
Dreidi growled, “I did it because the galaxy is never going to be safe for him. He is a warrior, Jedi or not I cannot say, but warriors do not live long lives. I will not bury him.” Dreidi’s golden eyes flickered with protective fires, she would not be condescended for trying to do her best in saving Aileni from harm.
“Hmph. Well, I guess you come to me since what you have read did not provide the answers you sought. I cannot tell you much, you are a race not native to Dathomir or her Magick. How your kind will react to a spell I cannot predict, but you might find that he is not the same as you. Aileni might be remade in Dathomir’s image.” The witch stated.
“What does that mean?” Dreidi demanded to know.
The Clan Mother chuckled wearily, “do you see how the creatures of Dathomir are? They are feral, dangerous. Even the plant life here aims to kill. Imbuing a child with your Magick, you might have changed who he is. Could be that he is more Dathomiri than you are, Dreidi.” There was a knowing smirk on the lips of the witch that Dreidi knew this other woman knew more than she let on.
“What have you seen from my son? I know you are keeping something from me.”
“Ah, how perceptive, Jedi. I have seen what he becomes, the person, the beast. It is something truly… Dathomiri… There is nothing you can do to change that now. All you can do is prepare and learn not to be so blaise when casting your Magick.” There was a snicker at the end and before Dreidi could retort, the witch disappeared in her teleportation.
“Damn you!” Dreidi cursed, whether it was at herself for the curse she seemingly placed on Aileni or to the cryptic witch, she could not say.
All Dreidi did was allow herself a single tear, now alone. “I am so sorry Aileni, I thought I was keeping you safe.” She muttered to herself as Dreidi hugged herself.
