The space around the Prime Galaxy contains relatively small galaxies with millions or billions of stars, largely uncharted so far as our galaxy's civilizations and nav data are concerned. They are often considered not worth the trouble, as our galaxy has four hundred billions of stars and, on average, much richer resources.
Besides, reaching any of these relatively close-by galaxies is challenging, time-consuming, and cold. Most lie beyond a vast hyperspace barrier with rare and painstaking routes outside.
But they have their peoples, their civilizations, their deep time, their secrets, and their own incredible sights. Taking part in an extragalactic expedition is a unique badge of honour among spacers. Very few have visited even one. I count myself lucky that my father took me to Gadma Station as a boy. Even if we were almost eaten by visiting fungi, it was a formative experience.
Spacers call certain worlds or space stations the Doorsteps. If you reach here, you've made it. You can rest in relative safety, catch your breath, resupply, before you begin exploring the galaxy you've sought.
Even the closest and best-known of these are a lifetime's work to understand. Several have no Doorstep at all — not yet. If you find one or establish one, I'd love to hear about it.
