- CyroGenic Reserve Powercell Banks and redundant power circuitry: While many starships have back-up power, the Gurrcat has an abnormally large number of reserve cells designed to quickly move through alternate power circuits to most of the ship's systems in case ionization or energy-draining attacks disable these systems.
- Atmospheric Warship: As with the original CC-9600, the Gurrcat was designed with atmospheric performance in mind through the use of retractable maneuvering fins that improve stabilization and improve atmospheric responsiveness. This makes the Gurrcat an excellent choice in ground support operations, especially with its large troop complement.
- Auxiliary Battle Bridge: While the Gurrcat is normally commanded from the command tower rising up from its port side which provides its users with good visibility of the battlefield, it also has a secondary bridge closer to the bow and on the starboard side that is less prominent (and thus less vulnerable) to many opponents.
- Well Defended: The Gurrcat has solid shielding systems and an well reinforced hull, making it more capable of withstanding damage compared to many of its peers.
- Fast: The Gurrcat is a fairly fast craft for its size, making it well-suited for pursuing other craft or making rapid tactical maneuvers across the battlefield.
- What fighters? The Gurrcat's small hangar was not designed to carry any starfighters, making it incapable of fielding any sort of starfighters.
As its name suggests, the Gurrcat 9600 is a modernized version of the older CC-9600, and yet another shameless attempt by CorelliSpace to profit off of others older work by updating it with new technology. The Gurrcat retains many of its older predecessor's advantages, including reasonably good speed and defenses as well as the ability to carry an entire regiment of troops along with their associated equipment and vehicles. CorelliSpace largely improved the design by updating its weaponry, notably including a new main battery of four twin heavy turbolasers which provide the Gurrcat with a much longer reach and more tactical options than its predecessors design, along with lighter weaponry including laser cannons and concussion missile launchers designed not only to act as point defense weapons, but also as ground fire support weapons. Other improvements include a secondary battle bridge as well as additional reserve powercells designed to help improve the frigate's performance against those who prefer ion or energy-draining attacks. The Gurrcat's greatest weakness is its small hangar's inability to carry starfighters, but many commanders believe that it is a fair tradeoff to carry support craft that can support ground operations as well as the pair of drop pod launching chutes. While ostensibly designed for planetary defense forces to provide close-in protection against invaders (especially the Bryn'adul), the Gurrcat is just as often used by raiders, who use the craft's excellent atmospheric performance and large troop and cargo space to land large numbers of groundside raiders to plunder resource-rich targets or hold cities and towns hostage for ransom.
