Private A Chance

Darth Vindictus

The small shuttle approached the predetermined meeting point in the Tingle Arm, touching down on the out of the way world of Pochi. Other than the pilots, Darth Vindictus had only one companion for this trip, Erika Sin Erika Sin whom he had recently recruited. She was young, but ambitious. She had goals and aspirations for her future, and how she wished for the galaxy to develop. A person like her was rare enough to find in the galaxy, and Vindictus had not squandered the chance to see her join the fledgling One Sith. In time he would see what she could truly offer them, but for now she had a different purpose.

Today, she was here to help recruit another.

Vindictus had been watching the other Sith organizations in the galaxy closely. Among those he watched, one in particular stood out. Rylan Caedes was rather still new to the ways of the Sith, and yet he showed the potential for greatness that many of the best Sith had in the past. He had sent a coded message to the man, asking for a simple audience so that they may discuss matters of the future. Vindictus had remained rather vague on all the details, hoping instead that the intrigue and mystery of the matter would ensure the Sith would come.

"So, what do you think of our chances this day, Erika."

A once magnificent and impregnable edifice, Fortress Baarlos had fallen upon hard times. A fortress so ancient, no record of its creation remained in any archive Rylan had found. It was remote and massive, two excellent features, coupled with its nearness to Anderahl, made it a prime location for Rylan.

It hadn't been unoccupied, however. Rylan had seen to rooting out the squatters when he arrived. He had intended merely to scout the area of the proposed meeting by the Sith Lord who had reached out to him as if from the aether, and had instead a place he now intended to claim as his own. He would need to be careful, however. His current allegiance to the Warlords of the Sith, tenuous as it was, would likely be tested with the forthcoming meeting. Rylan was almost sure of it.

Why else meet out near the Warlords space, but not inside it.

Why show Rylan to this place that would serve as an excellent base of operations.

He did not yet know, might never find out. Rylan wasn't a fool. If this Sith Lord was reaching out to him, Rylan was likely not a threat to him as of yet, but instead would be useful for some plot or plan. It was the way of the Sith to seek out those who were useful and use them, wasteful as it inevitably was. Rylan intended to survive it if at all possible.

A powerful presence drawing closer pulled Rylan from his reverie, and he stepped out from the broken maw of the main gate to the fortress. Rylan dressed in armor, armed with his lightsaber at his side, and a cape flowing from his shoulders. His motions, likely quite clear from the landing ship, looked prideful, with well-balanced steps like those of a predator. His demeanor was neither aggressive nor relaxed but struck a form of ready middle ground.

When Rylan drew to within one hundred yards of where the ship landed, he would stop. He stood there, hands loosely held behind his back, and he waited, letting the occupants get as good a look at him as they wanted.

Fate found Erika, and fate placed her in the shadows of this Sith Lord. Her dad was rolling in his grave, and she knew he wouldn't respect this decision had he still been alive. Regardless, Vindictus had proven to be quite pleasant to be around, his mostly calm demeanor was infectious. She had yet to see the man crack under any form of pressure, and his abilities as a leader continued to grow and prosper. If he continued this path, Erika was sure he'd obtain his goal in mind.

"Through thew Force, anything is possible, my lord." Was her response.

"An appropriate response. young one." Vindictus did not say anything else as he turned his full attention to Rylan Caedes as he approached. In truth, Vindictus had visited the ruins of the fortress on this world once before during his travels. He had not been as thorough in his mop up of the fortress as Rylan evidently had been, but at that time the fortress had been but a passing interest. However, it served as a useful landmark for this meeting, and what came of it afterwards was not a direct interest of Vindictus.

Vindictus tilted his head to the side slightly, the hood of his cloaked robes moving to obscure half his face in shadows. From what he could see and sense, this man Vindictus had traveled across the galaxy to see was living up to expectations. He moved with an internal confidence, a balanced stride, and a surety of purpose that was the hallmark of the Sith. The fact he served another, for now, was but a minor setback. After this meeting, Vindictus hoped all would be on the right path.

He began to walk the short distance between them, each stride almost elegant in its delivery. Vindictus took the time to fully size up the Sith he was approaching, and in a split second decision, he knew for certain what he needed to do. Halting less than a yard away, Vindictus stared unblinking into the eyes of the other Sith, letting silence reign for several seconds.

"I, am Darth Vindictus. It pleases me that you have come.

Seeing the Sith Lord face to face, being able to sense the depth of power through his connection to the dark side, Rylan had a feeling how this meeting would go. It could only have gone one of two ways. If the Sith Lord had no spine, if his connection to the dark side was weaker than Rylan's own, then Rylan would have attacked before the second word had left the cowled man's mouth.

Instead, the Sith Lord introduced himself as if he were from Anderahl society, looking Rylan in the eyes the whole time. Rylan smirked, then dropped his eyes to the side and offered a slight bow with his head tilted to the side just enough. Were Rylan from Atrisian society, the length of bow would have been an insult to anyone not of equal or lower rank. The bow was meaningless in the society Rylan came from, it was the head tilt that showed respect. Dropping the eyes and barring the throat pronounced who Rylan thought the bigger predator was in this meeting.

With a grace that belied the weight of armor he wore, Rylan straightened and looked back at Darth Vindictus.

"I am Rylan Caerdes, Darth Draehl of the Sith." Normally he would have claimed to be of the Warlords of the Sith with his title. It was who he had served until he had set foot on this world. Now he presumed he was in some odd limbo. "I was intrigued to get your message. It is rare for someone to be able to hunt me down without a whisper reaching me." The man had earned Rylan's respect and forthright answer. "So very well met, Darth Vindictus." He paused a moment there, his eyes squarely on the lower part of the other man's face. Anderahl society was hard to remove from anyone who had grown within it.

"Tell me, what do you need of me?"
