A Crash Course In Forced Adoption... Sanity Not Included

Lorane sighed as he took another look at the datapad. His and Rawnie's last job before their wedding, and they were hunting a kid? It made him a little sad, with all the talk between the two of them about having kids of their own. Was he really going to have to zap a little girl and put her in a cage? And then deliver her to fething Ossus? Into the hands of those space-wizards he harbored such animosity towards?

He tried to tell himself it was just a job, but it bothered him a lot. He couldn't get himself emotionally detached like he usually did.

Lor slipped back into bed and nuzzled the back of Rawnie's neck, trying to make himself feel a little better. It didn't work. He felt himself put his arms around her, keeping close to the one person in the universe who ever understood him.

"I really wish we hadn't taken this job."

She knew his feelings on it. Rawnie hated it. She was having a hard enough time just accepting herself as it was, after her last attempt at a military career. But she needed credits, both for the clan, and to start a family. If they wanted children of their own, she would have to take jobs that were not always perfect.

"I wish we hadn't either..." she murmured, "Lorane... I don't feel right about this."

Space wizards. She hated dealing with them. In any form. Her father had always told her stories about them. How they had power that was frequently abused. And then there was her brother, one of those space wizards. She remembered the time someone from the order came to take him away.

Her father had buried his body in a place nobody would ever find it.

"You will not stop me."
The man and the woman stared down at their daughter in sudden fear. They didn't want her to leave. Despite everything, the woman still loved her daughter with all her heart.
"P-please, Aury.... You don't need to leave! This is your home!"
The little girl smiled sweetly at her mother.
"A mother's love... It truly is impossible to shake. How adorable..."
With a wave of her hand, the man and woman would be tossed to the side, exposing the door. The child would walk over to it, the doorknob just reaching below her jaw. The man glared at her.
"You're not our daughter... You're a MONSTER....."
The girl laughed.
"I was wondering when you would catch on, father."
As the door opened to the light of day, the woman spoke up.
"......... Where's our daughter?.........."
Another sweet, uncaring smile.
"She left a long time ago..."

Lorane finally pulled away, still holding Rawnie's hand. He could understand the bounty on the girl, if she really was a Sith. That made him feel a little better, although he knew Rawnie was still shaken from that day on Muunilist. He didn't think he could've fired on unarmed civilians unless they'd made the mistake of firing on him first.

"Maybe there's a way we can avoid the Jedi altogether. Hand her over to somebody else. Short of Myrkr, a lot of the Mandalorian prisons are relatively good."

She was silent as she considered. If they didn't take the job, someone else would, so quitting was out of the question. But he was right. they didn't have to take her to the Jedi. But then, how else would they get paid? Would someone else pay them? She bit her lip.

"Let's just get this over with so we can move on. We can decide what to do with her once we've actually got her."

She got up, putting her armor on piece by piece. Someday, she'd have her own kids. She could be assured that they were safe in the village, running around, playing with the strill, learning to hunt, she could teach them to shoot. They could both teach their children. She smiled at that, even if this mission still did not sit right with her.

The day was much too happy. The children were having too much fun playing in the city. Auralee watched them as she walked by. The minute they saw her, they stopped to stare at her. The fear in their eyes brought a smile to her face. How long had it been since she'd terrorized them? She couldn't remember exactly. But there was no doubt that they could.
