Daughter of Fen
Lina felt her shoulders sag the moment she stepped out of sight of the chamber and its occupants, leaning against the cool wall of the quiet corridor she allowed herself a moment to simply breath. The weight of the days since her wedding were taking their toll. The trip to the Stygian Caldera after her wedding, her conversation with Malum, the fight on Faldos. All of it had taken its toll. And what did she have to show for it? A tenuous alliance at best with Malum? The Emperor's eyes on her? She was certainly no closer to gaining Strosius to her side. If their fight on Faldos had not seen to hammering the nail in the coffin on that front, then today certainly had.
She had been ready to stand in his way. Not that the Emperor or Empress needed her protection, but she had been ready all the same. Had she truly been so enraptured by them at their last meeting that they had such loyalty from her? Or was this an action of a subconscious scheme to place herself in favour of those more powerful? How was it that she could not know her own mind?
She pushed herself off the wall as others began to emerge, pain flashing across her expression at a wound still healing before being folded beneath a blank visage. She pulled the datapad from her pocket, and buried herself in it as she began to walk. Anything to quiet the thoughts, to distract from her pain. The latest report from Faldos…a list of the dead, families who would need to be contacted and compensated.
The work never ended.
