A Leap of Faith [Past RP | Phylis]

It hadn't been too long since Rhiari had been found stealing on Serenno - from a Jedi no less! - and was given an opportunity at a better life. It was strange how things worked out. Once they had settled on Coruscant she was given a few days to settle in and get a feel for her new surroundings, so naturally Rhi had taken to the streets, a place where she felt more at home compared to the towering buildings where she felt small and insignificant.

Things hadn't gone quite to plan, and she had run into some gruesome scene involving a pipe. She'd done her best to help out the Jedi who had taken the brunt of the damage, but the ordeal had been eye opening. Sure Serenno had a darker side, far from the beaten track, but it was nothing compared to Coruscant's undercity.

After that, Rhi had returned to the Temple alongside Lok, the Jedi in question, and was a lot more wary about leaving the Temple. It had to be safer in there, with all those Jedi, after all!

Now Rhiari was waiting to hear back from Phylis, the Jedi who had found her on Serenno and brought her here. Her days for settling in were coming to and end, and no doubt this meant some decisions had to be made concerning her future. Rhi was a little anxious, she didn't want to be placed in some sort of orphanage or left to fend for herself again should Phyllis decide she didn't have the time or energy to spend on a child.

A lot had happened in eleven years. Empires had risen and fallen, the dance of nations and leaders had gone on. Phylis Alince was eleven years younger but still…well…herself. Before Alkahest, before Kaeshana and Siobhan, before defeats and setbacks, the newly minted Jedi Master was on a mission.

“Room…91…” she pondered as she walked through the guest accommodation wing of the Coruscant temple. She’d been looking for a quarter hour, but the rooms seemed to stop at fifty! Something wasn’t right.
“Ah, Padawan, a moment?” she asked a random Togruta.
“Yes, Master?”
“I’m looking for room 91, but I can’t seem to find it.”
“Hmm, I don’t believe there is a room 91, Master. Perhaps it was room 16?” The Padawan turned the piece of flimsy in her hands.
“Ah…well, could be. I shall investigate. Good work, Padawan, hmm.”

Finally therefore, Phylis found her way to room 16 and knocked. She recognised the presence behind the door as correct.
“Hmm, Rhiari, it’s Master Alince, may I come in?” she asked politely.

Completely oblivious to Phylis' number-issue, Rhiari sat on the very edge of her bed and stared at the door. Oh what was going to happen to her now? She glanced around the pristine room which had barely been touched at all by the girl save for the bed and the chair. They weren't her things to be messing with! So she had left them well enough alone.

Dressed in some neutral clothes, that did not suggest any sort of affiliation to the Jedi but also were far more acceptable than the rags she had been found in, Rhiari didn't quite notice herself in the mirror. The child who stared back was gaunt and unkempt, and the clothes looked odd on her. It made the child frown.

And then there came a knock at the door, which had her leap out of her skin. Her heard pounded, and as she slowly exhaled to calm herself she heard a familiar voice speak through the door. Rising up she moved toward it. Though she hadn't quite heard what Phylis had said she knew it was her all the same, and so she opened the door and curiously peered up at the Jedi Master.

Immediately she bowed, as she had seen the other Jedi do to one another in passing. "Hello ma'am" the little girl said, before stepping back to let her enter.

Phylis beamed. “Hello, Rhiari, take a seat, please.”

She let the girl sit on the bed, and took the room’s one chair for herself.
“Hmm, well, I will not keep you in suspense. I have asked the Council to allow me to train you. They have accepted. Hmm, yes, and I think it will work out well. I have not had a Padawan so young before, so it will be a learning experience for us both. Do you accept?”

She was pretty sure she knew the answer, but she was always polite where possible.

Rhiari blinked before hastily taking a seat on the edge of the bed again. Then she remembered that it was best to use her voice! "Yes, ma'am" she said to the instruction of sitting, and once Phylis had also sat the woman began to speak. The more she said the more Rhi's eyes lit up with curiosity and wonder. Phylis was going to train her? The urchin who had stolen from her? This was quite the turn of events, Rhiari had thought she would be shipped away almost immediately.

Exhaling in relief the little girl smiled meekly before nodding her head. "Yes please, ma'am, I'd like that" she said, her mind racing. What would this mean for her? Would she become one of the Jedi she used to read about? Best she stop fantasizing, no doubt Phylis would explain more now that the foundations had been lain.

“Hmm, excellent! However, you must know that this is not a decision to make likely. Becoming a Jedi is a long and often difficult process, and requires total commitment from you. You must be able to follow my instructions, not because that is something important to me, but for your own safety and progression. Being a Jedi is a way of life, not just a profession.”

She sat on the bed beside the girl and put a gentle hand on her shoulder.
“But I am glad you are taking this path, Rhiari. If you can manage and control your emotions and impatience you can be a great Jedi.”
That was about as stern as Phylis got.

Rhi frowned to the woman's initial response; perhaps she shouldn't have been so hasty? "Would... Would you rather I meditated on it first?" she inquired, she knew that was what all the great Jedi were said to have done concerning big decisions, but honestly Rhiari already knew the answer in her heart and no amount of meditating was going to alter her answer.

"I promise that I'll listen, and learn", oh, Rhiari especially loved learning, she always had done. Perhaps that was what had attracted her to the datacron she had tried to steal from Phylis back on Serenno, more so than the credits it could've bought her. Best she didn't dwell on that, though, she knew that stealing was wrong, and she didn't want to bring the matter up again. After all, Phylis was someone she was very quickly learning to respect.

"May I ask you a question, ma'am? Why did you choose to become a Jedi?" These days more and more people were, after all, making the conscious decision to become part of the Order. But for all she knew, perhaps the choice had never been Phylis' to make. Did the Order still recruit children? That was honestly something Rhi did not know.
