Private A Medical Intrigue

Sylas stepped of the drop ship onto the surface of Naboo. He was deep in GA territory which wasn't normal for him but he had heard along the grape vine that most medicinal upgrades came from Naboo particularly due to their new medical production facilities. Sylas wore a green suit he had worn the last time he was on an off world meeting, he was growing slowly more accustomed to wearing suits and filling his role as the CEO of Mirdirmorut. He nodded to the head of his security, "I think I'm pretty safe here, so stay with the ship for the moment. I will call if I need you." The armoured person nodded stepping down and settling in next to the ship, keeping an eye on the refuelling and the rest of the security team who all sat down and began waiting for Sylas' return.

Sylas continued moving towards the building he had been told to visit. As he did he spoke gently "And your sure this person is ready to meet with us Genesis? I would really like to not be in the middle of GA territory if I could. Too many rules and given my force using status, I am sure the jedi wouldn't be exactly happy to bump into me. Plus I sell weapons to whoever I want to which has often lead to me selling to various groups who might have differing ideas to the GA and their galactic views." A whisper soft voice came through his ear piece Of course they are, after all if you are gone then who do I have to bother. I mean I suppose I could mess with some of the board but that wouldn't be as fun and besides your father made me with keeping Mirdirmorut within the Taff family in mind and so far there's no one else left in that family besides you. I can't go losing you now can I?

Sylas chuckled slightly to himself on that thought. "I suppose not." As he stepped into the building arriving at a reception area. "Hi, I'm the representative from Mirdirmorut. I believe I have an appointment looking into Bacta and emerging medical fields." The receptionist looked through a holopad before replying "Yes of course, just head that way. They are waiting for you presently I believe." Sylas nodded "Excellent, thank you." As he begun heading in the direction that was pointed towards.

Lila adored the planet of Naboo. It was one that she felt she did not visit frequently enough. Everything about it seemed so perfect and picturesque but other matters that required her attention needed her elsewhere. Fortunately, a scientific conference to share the progression within the medicinal community gave the Twi'lek reason to travel to the Mid-Rim planet. With new facilities being erected, it allowed for more connections to be formed.

It had also been requested that she meet with the CEO of Mirdirmorut over an interest in pursuing medicinal and pharmaceutical business. She was in favour of the exchange of knowledge to advance the healthcare of the galaxy but she already had her reservations about the company she would have talks with. Looking through the products they already provide, it consisted of mainly weapons, armed droids, and assault vehicles - not the sort of corporation that seemed invested in the wellbeing of others. She had her suspicions that it was just an attempt to accumulate more credits: supply weapons to cause harm and the treatments to rectify the injuries caused by their own products. One such droid was especially disturbing with its ability to transmit the Rakghoul plague. She did not see this meeting going well.

Lila sat in the foyer of the building where she had met others in her field. It was a convenient place to meet - nothing formal and public. She sat with one leg crossed over the other, her long dress draped over her. She scrolled through a holopad, reading up on any new developments of the Sith and Mandalorian endeavors, as a young yet greying man approached. She presented him with a smile as she lowered the holopad and extended a hand to him. "You must be Mr Taff. It is a pleasure to meet you. Please," she began as she gestured to the chair across from her. "Have a seat."

As Sylas arrived at the location that had been pointed out by the receptionist, he was already welcomed by a twi'lek lady who knew his name. He was however unfamiliar with her. But that was quickly changed as Genesis quietly murmured into his ear piece That would senator Lila Doneeta of Thyferra. Seems out meeting went up the chain of command more than I had thought sir. Sylas tried his best to keep his emotions calm and hide the surprise that would have otherwise radiated across his face. He was expecting to meet with perhaps a representative here on Naboo, not a Senator. He sat in the chair across from her, responding still trying to regain a sense of balance in himself. "Senator Doneeta, this is an unexpected turn of events. I was not aware I had booked a meeting with a member of your senate. It is also a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

He took a minute before saying anything else regaining his sense of balance under these new circumstances. "So you would be the representative I have come to talk to about the various emerging of medical fields and the like." He paused and then continued onwards. "So I am sure your probably wondering why a company as weapons versed as mine, is interested in such fields. To tell you the truth, its to stay ahead of the coming storm." He then nodded to her data pad she had been using, "Surely you know, what with the new governmental leadership appearing again within the Esstran and surrounding sectors, along with the mandalorians moving about and your own jedi order, with assistance of your government making strike into that area, that things are a little tense all along the Daragon Trail and the Parlemian Trade Route."

Sylas thought about this for a moment, before plunging in anyways, "What with all of that I have a planet to keep safe. Noverskaa is my home, and has been the home of a majority of Mirdirmorut's workers and forces for some time now. What with the Silver Jedi falling and no one keeping the peace anymore, we were glad to have been on the cutting edge of weaponised droid units. But now with a possible war potentially passing through our little peaceful sector, we are trying to branch out enough to keep ourselves to ourselves." Sylas stopped looking towards to senator to see if any of his talk had landed home to her at all or perhaps was she too deep into the Galatic alliance propaganda, in the belief that they were right to do what they are potentially going to do.

Lila gave the man a smile. "It is true that my senatorial duties have occupied more of my time in recent events but I am still rooted in the medical field. If I am being honest, it is quite refreshing to get the opportunity to discuss the field which I hold dear instead of the debates of methodology and morality." Politics were something quite new to her but it opened doors that would otherwise be firmly shut. She wanted what was best for all, not just within the borders of the Galactic Alliance.

The planet of Noverskaa was not one that she knew much about. Her suspicions had been partly correct but she admired the intention to become self-reliant. In an ideal galaxy, the supplies would be available to all without the need for corporations to profit from people's afflictions but that was just not feasible. "Yes, we are all feeling the strain from an impending war," she agreed with a saddened tone of voice. "Whilst Thyferra is a part of the Galactic Alliance, that does not mean an exclusivity of its exports to members. Bacta distribution spans to the Mid Rim and even beyond in some cases, for it is not only the core planets that require it."

"This meeting was not initiated to convince you of the benefits the Alliance could have for your people and, if we can speak truthfully, I have no intention of trying to persuade you in the slightest. Nor do I suspect that you are looking for a negotiation with the production facilities of Thyferra, though that can be discussed."
She uncrossed her legs and sat more upright in her chair. "Obviously there are certain things I cannot disclose to you in relation to our process and products but information in the pursuit of science could benefit us all."

"Like today, for example. Even here on Naboo, a planet outside the bounds of the Alliance, leaders in their fields discussed recent advances from their research."
The Twi'lek did not care for borders or profit, their progress was ultimately in service of the people. She had not yet determined what kind of man Sylas was and she still had reservations about the company he represented, but if it truly was to provide better protection for the citizens of his planet, she wanted to help. "So my question to you, Mr. Taff, is what can I do for you?"

Sylas felt a tension he wasn't fully aware of leave his body as the Senator across from him assured him that she wasn't going to try convincing him to assist in making his planet apart of the GA. But somewhere in the back of his mind, he was also aware that a time might pass where the GA may very well arrive on his doorstep whether he liked it or not. He nodded "Then I am glad to have a talk with someone of your expertise and insight. I came here today in order to try and inquire about the potential creation of cloning organs and the like from biomolecules." In truth he was as he had set up a deal with Liin Terallo Liin Terallo on New Cov for a shipment or so of them every so often.

Sylas nodded along "Yes I could only imagine what a war does on such a large galactic body with so many constituents to keep safe. I am sure there are companies from within your ranks that will make a killing as it were supplying weapons, armours and the like to various factions, particularly considering I saw a news brief not long ago about a senator from Skako being denounced by his own constituents for selling things to factions currently not friendly to the Galactic Alliance."

He then thought for a moment before starting on a thought to continue his early thought. "Currently some of the R&D scientists that are employed with my company have been playing around with the idea of making more organic looking droids that would be able to be eaten for sustenance, almost like animals built off the idea of droid schematics that would ultimately at least they hope be able to survive in most environments including differing air environments. Thus off the back of that it made me particularly wonder if that was at all possible to do except with organs and the like for people. Not cybernetics but almost a more organic offshoot of that."

Sylas then started again "Another thought I had was increasing the viability of kolto. I know it was once big before the bacta production became the major domination of galactic healing. Just wondering as well if perhaps there is a way for kolto to be increased in usefulness even as a viable backup should bacta production ever run particularly thin." He then stopped looking at the senator, "Apologies senator if I am going down too many paths, but its not often I get a chance to speak to someone highly regarded within any field. Well except for my father and grandfather but thats mostly through a holocron so they can only give so much assistance." Sylas finished thinking deeply on that fact.

Lila sat and listened intently as the man spoke, nodding at certain points to appear engaged. "Yes, I had heard a similar thing. Though bacta production originated on Thyferra, its citizens are not hesitant to share with the rest of the galaxy, regardless of allegiances. That is why you see other corporations devising their own compositions to replicate the success of the Vratix, though I cannot speak to the efficacy of such products. After all, Thyferra is the source of the constituents of bacta." She gave a knowing smile to Sylas.

Thinking on his point, she provided her own insight. "Synthetic biology has had its advancements but we have only come so far. May I ask why you are thinking of droids with synthetic flesh as a source of food? If it is to be grown in a lab to provide for your people, what need is there for it to be able to roam free? It would not have the capacity to replicate so cannot be cultivated." Given the other products of Mirdirmorut, she suspected perhaps it would be weaponised under the guise of food production.

"What you speak of sounds very familiar to human replica droids, machines covered in biofiber and synthskin to pass as organic lifeforms. It is a very rare and costly investment." They even had the capability of misleading scanners into identifying them as organics. The idea concerned the Senator. "If it is truly for sustenance, then food synthesizers can produce edible matter from certain sugars and carbohydrates. It is commonplace in starships but I'll admit, it is not an area I know much about. The issue is, we cannot make tissue from scratch. Even the most successful trials to produce completely new cells can only mimic, at best, and even then, replication and physiological process are not identical. Even synthskin is not true skin, only an artificial covering. Cells need to be cultured from cells."

"You are quite right that cloning is a possible route. It is an exact science, expensive, and requires expertise but it is a technology that has been used for hundreds of years. Using a person's cells to culture and grow into an organ for transplantation is an option but cybernetics are usually more easily accessible and affordable. It does reduce the risk of rejection by the body than organ donations or ulterior methods but is not as diverse. Even cells taken from bone marrow are only multipotent and can be restrictive in what can be produced. Genetic reprogramming may be needed, another time-consuming process."
Lila took a sip from a glass that was on the table before her as Sylas continued. Placing it delicately back down, her eyes reverted back to the man in front of her.

"Indeed. Kolto was the leading treatment at one stage and is still used to this day in medpacks. Like bacta, it originates from only one planet: Manaan. The difference is that it is only a liquid found in their oceans, something that is not easily mass-produced. Some even believe it is produced by an ancient aquatic species, though this is unproven. If that is the case, then it is a limited resource. Thus, it has a higher cost. It also does not have the potency that is achievable with bacta but potential studies could increase its efficiency. Bacta is completely replicable, with alazhi being cultured in a lab, Vratixian barley being farmed, and kavam being synthesized. It is highly unlikely that bacta production should be low." Unless there were attacks on the facilities like in the past. "Distribution and money are the limiting factors for supply. I hope that has answered some of your questions, Mr. Taff." One side of Lila's lips curled into a smile.

Sylas nodded along, it was something he was aware of that the formula for bacta was well accessible and was public knowledge. He wasn't so interesting in trying to synthesis bacta though, such things had been tried over the years by various others with various amounts of success. However the next point was the more interesting one as it more address his ideas. "It's not so much me as much as the people in R&D. I am sure over the years you've seen a number of reclamation projects similar to the old telos four project. Where a number of different groups attempted to reintroduce life to a cindered planet that had been orbitally bombarded by an enemy fleet. So perhaps instead of substance its closer to a form of reclamation being able to bring back indigenous life, although in more of a synthetic form. The current reason I say droids, is because we are using our own droid templates in order to try constructing such creatures as my company has very little research outside of droids and most companies tend to get a bit anxious when you start asking to see their genome sequencing records. Particular if they have heard of some of our more sinister projects." Sylas said sighing.

After listening to the senator sylas felt slightly disheartened. "Perhaps your right, such things are extremely costly, although in our modern era, I must admit I see far more human replica droids than just regular droids. But perhaps that's just because I was once part of the silver jedi and knew of Sasori who seems to specialise in such types of droids. Perhaps I'm slightly too hopeful about such a project managing to come together but I'm sure you've seen sith spawn before, that exist because of the force. I once met a Corydoris which are also creatures of the force but lightsided that were made from trees. Guess I was hoping science could be able to perform such feats as well." He said shrugging off the rest of the idea for the time.

Sylas nodded to that "Yes Cloning has been around for ages, even with the resurgence of the kaminoan people thought I still feel that much of the potential of cloning has been lost, while also being still extremely costly and time consuming. Hence why I was thinking more of almost a flash cloning thing, not cloning a full person but simply a part of themself. Something that will save a person who might otherwise die without access to bacta which I have came to understand can heal most organs and the like with enough time within a bacta tank." Sylas sat thinking on that more, flash cloning still could work but he would need to get his hands on some of the cloning technology out there though and somehow make it easier, along with more affordable.

Sylas nodded "While I wasn't aware it was a liquid, I was aware it did come purely from mannan. I suppose due to its less effective nature, and its limited replication potential that bacta is just the far easier choice. That is a shame but I suppose it is how this particular cookie crumbles. As for distribution issues, thankfully Mirdirmorut invested into a shipping company start up on Noverskaa which has been able to produce decently defensive ships to keep our shipping lanes open in these difficult times, so much so that we have begun assisting other people with keeping their own shipping lanes open. Turns out more than a few people find issues appearing along shipping lanes. Best guess is that pirates like the easy targets." He said sighing again. "But yes thank you for answering my questions, what about yourself, did you have any questions for me? I'm aware you've done your homework on my company, thus I'm sure you've probably bumped over some of our shadier past with the CIS when it still existed. So is there anything you'd like to ask?" He asked as politely as he could.

"It appears that Mirdirmorut has many ideas and I am amazed that you have not spread yourself too thin with the vast array of fields you are considering. Not only are you known for your production of droids, ordnance, and ships but now show interest in venturing into healthcare, agriculture, and species reintroduction. I would think the sheer workforce needed would require the employ of all of Noverskaa." Lila chuckled a little, though the ambition was admirable. "Actually, I do know that Sasori has developed technology to produce livestock for consumption, as you spoke about. That is to produce completely organic beings rather than synthetic droids."

She was taken aback a little by what Sylas said. It was a scary thought that droids who are fully programmable were more common than she realised and could just pass as humans. "As I am sure you know, the Force is an aspect of nature that is still largely a mystery. Attempts have been made in the laboratory to harness and manipulate it but they have been largely unsuccessful. As it stands, science cannot compete with or even explain the ways in which it works. Perhaps one day, but not yet."

Lila leant forward on her chair a little, a smile brought to her face. Cybernetic replacement was still the typical action but an increase in the use of living transplants from the patient's own DNA was encouraging. "That is an extremely exciting prospect. In fact, the livestock production method I mentioned previously actually uses flash cloning. As was pioneered by the Kaminoans, altering nutrients and catalyst solutions when incubating the clone accelerates its maturation process. The balance is essential, though. Uncontrolled growth and you could risk the development of tumours. You also want to avoid mutation if the speed bypasses proofreading or checkpoint mechanisms. That process also continues the accelerated ageing so that would need to be considered given the age of the patient, if you go down the transplant route. I have heard that some companies have rectified this issue, though."

"I would be interested to see what you accomplish. The Bakurans are known for their organ-cloning technology but it is exciting to see others develop the equipment for wider use in the galaxy."
Now the talks had turned from medical science to the company of Mirdirmorut. She still had reservations about them. "You said that the aim of this investment into new areas was to become more self-reliant as a planet in these difficult times. Would the outcome and information found as a result of these developments remain within your people or for all?" Though it was an area new for the company and she presumed that nothing groundbreaking would emerge any time soon, she was of the mind that advancements that could benefit everyone should be accessible to everyone and aid the pursuit of knowledge. "And yes, I am aware of your past endeavours. Would this signify a change in the objective for the company?" So many of the products she had seen were monstrous, particularly weaponising the rakghoul plague, and she was hopeful that it was a thing of the past.

Sylas laughed at the thought that Mirdirmorut had many ideas. "We've evolved and changed over the years. Sometimes we've found that we have an easier time making products on our own. Not a massive amount of people have reached out to work with us, in fact most of the products we sell or shipments we do at the moment are off the back of projects and deals that we've either made recently or made from before my time." He nodded at the mention of Sasori, that is who he was referring too. "They aren't the only ones, a group that used to exist to counter the SJO, one house Io also used similar methods."

Sylas shrugged "If you take a scientific mind, with enough force power and not enough ethics then I am sure they would be able to understand the force inside and out much like many of the industries run by the sith. I am always instead looking at how to perform certain things without the force. I often feel that it out balances people who end up in positions of power simply because they have some form of almost magic. I also have the force which gives me a unique perspective into it but even still." Sylas said not elaborating further on that.

Sylas smiled more interested "Well with flash cloning, what I was thinking is that the organ or the like comes out fully formed based on the person's genetic code. Not having to grow it but instead cloning it into fully readiness for the person as they are. Then you bypass the aging issues that were raised by the clone troopers the kaminoans made. Again its an idea, I don't know if I will ever to get it to completely work but its a possibility." Sylas said thinking off the top of his head, he didn't want to accidently kill people with these ideas if he could help it.

Now there was a question he didn't particularly like, because it suggested that he should offer this knowledge for free to everyone. "Why would I offer the outcomes to everyone? To people who currently have dealings with me, for sure, my own people, of course, its why I am here after all to see if these things are even remotely possible. But you tell me, why should one offer their enemies ways to fix themselves, ways to help them destroy my people. I am sworn to protect my people in accordance to our council. Much like my father before me I was also offered the security seat and I took it."

Then he looked her in the eye as he continued. "Would I be offering my people safety if I hand new technology over to people who might just decide to take us? What would you do senator, if you weren't apart of your galactic alliance, surrounded by enemies on all sides. With no one bringing you to the table for negotiations, you come out with new medical breakthroughs, do you give it to your enemies, give them more reason to take your planet or use it to help your people survive what might be the coming war?"

He then dropped his eyes to the floor, regaining some level of composure. "My apologies, my people mean a lot to me and we are in a very precarious position. Should any new technology come about I shall allow you some access to it as well, as a thank you for your assistance today. Then you can choose what you do with that." He then sighed "My company's goals have never changed since creation, to keep our people safe. Since founding, we have added all of Noverskaa to mean that and we are looking at taking another planet of Crispor under our wing as another unaligned planetary body. However the way we achieve those goals are hopefully more peaceful than in the past. The rakghoul droids your most likely the most afraid of have never been in production since our early days, when our founder managed to find a version of the muur talisman. While they do remain as special products, we have never had an order for them and its highly unlikely we will ever fulfil such an order."

Lila did not push further at the mention that Sylas was a Force user. She, herself, could commune with the Force to some degree to accomplish the enchantments taught to her long ago but that was not something that was public knowledge and would remain that way if she could help it. There had been studies that she had heard of around midi-chlorian transplantation to enhance the force (though they were unsuccessful) and involving the negating effects of ysalamiri. These were not areas she had an interest in and seemed more likely to be weaponised than for good.

"So you want to construct the organ directly, rather than grow it. If it is a process that you are able to perfect then I could see it being remarkably beneficial." She recoiled a little as his tone became more irked. "That is not what I was suggesting. As Minister of Health, it is my role to oversee the research and advancements within the Galactic Alliance but ultimately, I want all citizens of the galaxy to have the best care available. I know that it is largely unrealistic and is limited by the conditions Thyferra had to accept to be part of the Alliance. Nevertheless, it is a dream."

"Knowledge does not know boundaries or conflicts. The betterment of science helps us all and can open doors we only imagined but only if progress is shared. By no means am I asking you to give away organ-replicating technology that is built by your company, though I would be interested in bringing it to the board to discuss a deal if that is what you would desire? Of course, this is all speculative as nothing has been discovered or developed yet."
The restriction on what information could be shared as a result of being folded into the Galactic alliance was something that irritated the Twi'lek at times but it prevented potentially harmful information from being used against them by their enemies. Thyferra used to supply bacta to the entire galaxy before that list began to grow shorter and shorter in recent history.

'Highly unlikely' was not never and the idea still made Lila uneasy. "Your commitment to your people is commendable, Mr. Taff. I make it no secret that I do not like the use of weapons though I understand that they are sometimes necessary, especially when faced with war. Thyferra is a planet of research, yet the attack by the Empire showed us that we needed protection. I hope your people never know what that is like but work like yours could give them the best possible future." Her shoulders sunk slightly as she spoke, though she ended with a soft smile towards the man.

Sylas sighed slightly and looked apologetically at the senator. "Again apologies, Senator Donetta. While I would also enjoy the opportunity to spread the medical technology that could potentially be unlocked by these studies we constantly sit at the brink of a war and we simply don't have the technology and means to keep ourselves free of the grip of any particular galactic power. So any edge at all is something I am willing to take to save my people. They are basically all I have left." Sylas nodded "Galactic governments will always do whatever is necessary to protect themselves and their constitutions, and while I do not blame them, I also don't wish to join them either."

Sylas smiled slightly thinking on it, "It's a good dream to have, personally I dream of the day I can live without fear of people misusing the technology that gets built, that people don't continue fighting. Maybe on that day I will be able to find my family again. But that's a pipe dream at the moment. Most likely they have all perished hunted down by whomever is coming after me. Regardless its nice to have a hope and a dream." Sylas snorted slightly at knowledge knowing no boundaries. "Trust me knowledge knows boundaries, there are some things that must never be found again, some knowledge that should never be known, places that should be left to the annuals of time. Knowledge has it boundaries, one day you will also find the wall you can't climb to gain more knowledge and perhaps then you'll understand or perhaps worse you will also find something very dangerous that should never be shared."

He nodded though at the idea of the knowledge he was looking into would be helpful. "That's what I am hopeful for, that whatever comes out of all of these tests and ideas has benefits. That it doesn't get twisted and converted to whatever people want it to be. And besides with consistent attacks weapons will always be necessary and sometimes it's also necessary to keep around reminders of what happened the last time you walked a certain path." He then nodded at her. "However as I said before should anything come out of any of our tests we would be welcoming to sharing such information with yourself of course. You have been very helpful in sating my curiosity, hearing out my lunacy and above all showing that perhaps there is some good even within the larger galactic powers." Thinking a moment longer he then continued, "I am indebted to you for allowing for this meeting. Should you ever need assistance from me personally simply call this holonumber, its a direct line to me wherever I am in the galaxy. I shall attempt to render whatever help I can provide as such." He said softly holding out a card with a number listed on it. "It's very rare to see hope such as yours within a galaxy this dangerous and I would rather like to see it continue to survive whatever the coming storm brings."

Whilst Lila had expected to dislike the man who now sat before her, she was pleasantly surprised by his nature and demeanor. Sylas Taff did not live up to the money-orientated figure that she had imagined based on the company he represented. That was not to say that there could be certain aspects that were kept concealed from her but she got a sense from him that doing right by his people was what mattered most. "Yet another good dream. So often groundbreaking discoveries can have unforeseen repercussions when applied in ways outside of the intention." It was one of the reasons that the publication of research conducted within the Alliance was restricted from the worlds outside its borders.

The senator did not know much about the Taff family but it did not sound like a good situation. "I am sorry to hear that. I wish your family good health." There were potential ways that a person could be located but she did not trust the man enough yet to reveal her skillset which remained hidden from most. The woman who raised her had taught her the seeking spell, though that was for finding people in close proximity. A spell for greater distances was not possible on her own or perhaps without a talisman to channel the energy.

"Being mindful of our past is important for guiding our future. So many mistakes reoccur by forgetting that simple truth." Lila bowed her head and smiled at the man. "It has been my pleasure, Mr. Taff. I hope you find the answers that you seek." She graciously took his card, inspecting it before picking up her holopad from the table. Entering his details, she sent her information across. "And I hope I can do the same for you. There are times when I may be unreachable for some duration but I will reply when I can." The Twi'lek smiled with her eyes as she stood up, gathering her belongings. "Thank you for arranging this meeting. I have business to conduct elsewhere so I shall walk out with you." Lila escorted Sylas out of the building into the afternoon sun, continuing their conversation as they went.
