- Average Life: Dependent on how much is ingested and other factors, alcohol can remain in the system for up to 48 hours. The effects associated with drunkenness usually abate much faster, within a few hours, though it depends on how well you can hold your alcohol.
- Nutritional Value/Allergies/Side Effects/Purpose: The alcohol percentage of this beverage is quite high and can rapidly result in drunkenness.
- Can louche (turn cloudy or opaque) if you put a sugar cube on a tray over the glass and drip water over it. Then it becomes slightly more tolerable.
- May have mild hallucinogenic effects.
- It's... Well, It's Green: The green coloring is attributed to the wormwood. Contrary to popular belief, it will not cause the imbiber to hallucinate... provided it is properly distilled. Unfortunately, quite a few of these were improperly distilled by amateur homebrewers.
- Wormwood is Fickle: Cheaper or homebrewed versions of the stuff may fail to dilute the psychoactive substance found in the wormwood, which can result in hallucinations. Drink at your own risk, space cowboy.
- Acquired Taste: Most alcohol is, but in this case it's definitely true. Absinthe tends to have a very high alcohol percentage, ranging from 45-74% by volume. It also has a herbal or "medicinal" taste, which may not be everyone's cup of tea, er, booze.
Absinthe is a common Shi'ido alcoholic beverage with a green coloring. In the bottle, it is very alcoholic (undrinkably so for many casual drinkers), therefore it is typically served in a diluted or louched form with sugar and water. A sugar cube is placed on a metal tray over the glass, and water is poured over it from a fountain or pitcher. The water dissolves the sugar and drips down into the absinthe, causing it to become cloudy. Because of this, it is commonly confused for a liqueur, but this is not the case as it is not bottled with sugar.
When brewed properly, absinthe has no psychoactive properties. It's just very alcoholic. But this variation of the drink, originating in the refugee settlement of Maranatha, is often homebrewed by amateur distilleries who may not do it properly, resulting in the psychoactive properties of the wormwood remaining active. Despite the risks, Maranathan Absinthe has become a popular drink among the locals, as well as a profitable export.
