Absolutes

"Only a Sith deals in absolutes."
Are you Absolutely sure?
Absolute: noun

  1. 1.

    PHILOSOPHY
a value or principle that is regarded as universally valid or that may be viewed without relation to other things.

The idea that ONLY a Sith would deal in this type of concrete decision making is in and of itself an absolute statement. Apparently even the Jedi deal in absolutes. Let's just take a look at the code of the Jedi and the code of the Sith for a moment.
Jedi Code
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no death, there is the Force.
Sith Code
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
"There is no" - an Absolute statement
"There is only" - an Absolute statement

Maybe Anakin was right...

In some sense, the phrase "Only a Sith deals in absolutes" is an absolute by itself, as it assumes that all Sith do as what was stated. I think these scene was meant to (and you probably already knew this) point out the hypocritical flaws that can be attributed to every dogma, no matter how 'good' it might seem on the surface. It demonstrates that, while Obi-Wan is ultimately the good guy in this scenario and therefore supposedly unarguably correct, that even his thought process and ideals have their own inherent flaws. It shows that nobody is really completely right or correct, and that even those we might trust in as being so must reevaluate their own thoughts so they don't become part of the problem, so to speak.

And this is also why Keira is a rogue in the first place. :p

Peace begins with a smile.
I've come across this several times and I must say Obi Wan is wrong. The Jedi deal in some very absolute things. Of course, the character is under a lot of stress and disbelief at this moment. So it's not unlikely that his words are not very thought through. I have yet to see another Jedi express this belief, or to see him repeat it.

I think it's important to note that this doesn't forever discredit Kenobi. He is a great Jedi and gives us other good looks into the Force and the way of the Jedi, but he is perhaps not without flaws or misconceptions. This is one of the reasons why I find him to be an interesting character; he is imperfect and always developing.

Indeed I've always said this...
The Jedi absolutely deal with absolutes.

They also can't handle Sith...Let's look at it from a movie point of view:

Qui-Gon vs Maul: Maul wins because he uses the dark side of the force.
Obi-Wan vs Maul: Obi-Wan wins because he gets angry, touches the dark side and wins.

Obi-Wan vs Count Dooku: Gets beaten because Dooku uses the dark side.
Anakin vs Count Dooku: Gets beaten because Dooku uses the dark side.
Yoda vs Count Dooku: Can't kill Dooku because Dooku uses the dark side.

Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Count Dooku: Obi-Wan gets beaten. Anakin wins because he gets angry and touches the dark side.
Jedi vs Palpatine: Dark Side trumps.
Obi-Wan vs Anakin: Obi-Wan was emotional and probably touched the dark side a little bit, but if not then yes for once the dark side wasn't used to win.
Yoda vs Palpatine: Yoda loses because...Dark Side.

Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader: Dark Side wins.

Luke vs Darth Vader: Luke loses a hand like a wuse. Dark Side wins.

Luke vs Darth Vader: Luke touches dark side majorly and wins...

I'm seeing a pattern here...the Jedi absolutely were wrong.

I can't disagree with this assessment.

Emotion drives everything.

So if emotion is darkness, then truly Jedi don't exist as no one being can live without a singular emotion. It's psychologically impossible - unless of course your "made" that way.

Yes. Let's apply our IRL opinions into Star Wars lore again. Because that's been working sooo great since 1987. >.<''

You people. :p
