The message was spread out across the wall of the operations centre. The words frozen in place for all to see. “Get that nonsense off my wall!” Raziel called to one of the DfR analysts. Within seconds it vanished, to be replaced by a map of District II, showing the location of all citizens. Each citizen was a dot, coloured to show how content they were believed to be. The constant data mining an analysis of all citizen’s behaviour, communications and conversations held near drones was used to estimate how likely they were to voice dissent. Most of the screen was comprised of light grey dots. Compliant. Content. Productive.

The Department for Re-education carefully monitored the others, but that transmission meant today was probably going to be spent on something other than day-to-day monitoring. A small secretary drone, no larger than a fist, floated down to Raziel’s desk.

“He wishes to speak to you,” the drone announced in its metronomic voice. Raziel’s stomach turned as the drone dropped an earpiece into his hand and then deployed an acoustic field around him.

“No my Lord, we don’t know where it came from…no it’s some kind of transformation code that’s already been injected into the system, changing our messages as we send them…of course my Lord, we’re doing everything we can, but we’ve never seen code like this, I’ll have the Keeper investigate as well…yes my Lord if she shows herself, we’ll stop her.”

Raziel took the earpiece out and passed it back to the drone. The shimmering acoustic field vanished and the drone floated away. His eyes turned back to the operational centre wall. Something about today already felt different. Something was amiss. Already this one errant broadcast was the greatest disruption to the peace in months. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end.

Something was coming.
