Advice on writing/creating a Naval character?

I'm thinking of making a space captain/fleet commander type character. But there are some concerns I wanted some advice on.
  • Will it be hard to get them involved in most combat threads? Understandably it seems like the vast majority of people are playing ground pounders and a lot of thread objectives are either ground combat or boarding actions. Boarding actions upon my own ship seems like a way to RP with ground pounder characters but I can see myself getting burnt out if that's the only thing my space combat character ends up doing. Especially since I'll probably not make them very good at personal combat.
  • I'm thinking of keeping a list of ships and having these ships get modified, at least in the early years where there aren't that many ships this character is commanding and as such each individual ship will get more attention. But the question is, at what level of customization do I have to learn how to make codex subs?

First and foremost, codex and factory submissions are optional. Codex is for lore, Factory is for the nuts and bolts of things the more technical side of making ships. I'll provide some examples, here's a factory sub for a big starship but gives you an idea of what you'd do with a factory sub. Codex subs like this one, or that one. Are more or less for set pieces or a way for you to give more information about your ship as a set piece/setting.

Next, as far as fleeting, you'll want to look for objectives that feature fleeting. This is primarily in invasions where fleeting now gets its own little thread with one side fielding x amount of tonnage and y amount of fleeters against another faction's ships and fleeters. Boarding actions, as you mentioned is a good way to interact with ground pounders as it were. Not the only way to get into the 'thick of it' as a fleeter though. This recent DE vs GA invasion fleeting thread is a good example of what to expect.

Finally, keeping a list of ships and having them modified is totally up to you. I personally have a list of ships, I'm sure other fleeters have other ways they operate. The only 'critical' time having a list is 'necessary' and I quote these because again this is all optional, is during invasions just so you and your opponent have an easier go at keeping track of everything.

Hope that helps and I'm sure other fleeters will chime in with their own experiences and bits of advice. Otherwise, I hope you have fun!

Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate it. I want to clarify a little why I asked this. It might end up you still give me the same answer but I want to make sure I have this straight. So lets say I have a ship and its based on some preexisting hull. But I change its loudout and capabilities such that it fulfills a completely different combat role and provides new utility. Would you say at that point it merits a factory sub?

For me personally: If you're going to use it in PvP scenarios, definitely submit it as a factory sub. If you're just gonna do stuff with PvE, you don't need it and at that point it's mostly your own fluff. Keep in mind you cannot modify your sub once it's done. If you have to make any little changes, and I mean any little changes then you need to do an entirely new submission. So whether something merits a factory sub is up to you.

Example, I typically do submit my ships because there is an idea that at some point I'd like to PvP with them (even tho it's been ages). For things I don't really use in PvP I won't do anything for it.

tl;dr if you feel you need it yes (and I personally recommend so for pvp stuff just so you've dotted your i's and crossed your t's).
