Advice, please

I have so many questions that I don't know where to start and I feel like a Grade-A noob.

1. Character development: Aldy has a galactic-wide reputation among the scholarly community. She is a Professor of archaeology, history, and linguistics and is highly sought-after at professional conferences.

On the other hand, she has been gifted (and cursed) with certain unique Force abilities which have helped shape her chosen field.

Which of these should she pursue as time goes on? Do I only contribute to RP threads in which she can hide her Force abilities (which, at present, are hidden from 99 7/8% of the galaxy) or does she take her first step into a larger world and begin training as the lowliest scrub in the Jedi Order?

If the former, then I can simply have her join RP in which non-showy Force abilities can be hidden from the other characters. If the latter, then how would I make the transition (and reveal her secret)? How would I get a Master for her?

On top of everything else, not only is she considerably older than some characters, but she has certain ... quirks ... which would hinder traditional Jedi training. I really cannot see her wielding a lightsaber or using some of the flashier abilities accorded to Jedi. If Battle Meditation exists here, I could see her learning something like that (or having it drawn out from within her).

I am torn between the sayings of two Old Republic Masters on this issue. Odan-Urr (whom Aldy tries to emulate) said, "If a Jedi ignites his lightsaber, he must be ready to take a life. If he is not so prepared, he must keep his weapon at his side”

On the other hand, Master Thon (Nomi Sunrider's Master) said, "A Jedi does not seek out battles, but neither does she turn her back on battle, when it finds her."

If you all think she should follow The Path of The Jedi, then she would be a Consular (without a doubt).

2. SSC: What is Aldy's place at SSC? Is there a place here for someone who does *not* follow The Code of The Jedi? Would she be allowed anywhere near The Silver Temple and the training grounds on Voss?

I'm really not sure how things work within SSC. How do our characters get Jedi Masters and learn Force powers? What do Ranks mean in an RP setting? How much IC/OOC work would be required in order to reflect that she is an excellent scholar?

If SSC is a Jedi-only faction, then where else can Aldy go? If SSC accepts people who will not be learning to be Jedi, then is there a certain branch of SSC that she should join?

I really want to get into the spirit of RP around here, but I feel a bit overwhelmed and unsure of what my role (and Aldy's) is and will be in the future.

Thanks!

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :D

I'll pounce on this question since it's the easiest for me to answer at this late hour.

Long story cut short, not all SSC Forcers are Jedi. Far from it.

None of my Forcers are Jedi or follow the Code (no matter which version we're talking about). Sio is a Dark Jedi (and on the SSC Assembly), Elpsis is a neutral Forcer who doesn't belong to any Force tradition, Kaida is from an Eldorai (space elves) Force tradition that developed completely outside of the Jedi-Sith dichotomy.

It's a rather diverse group with a wide range of people in it. The only people not welcome are Sith, genocidal evildoers and so on. So your char should fit in perfectly without joining the Jedi, unless she wants to.

Thanks, [member="Siobhan Kerrigan"]! :)

I hope it's not silly, but I'm really torn on this. On the one hand, I don't really see Aldy being a lightsaber-wielder, yet Odan-Urr, for all his love of academic study, still had to go out in the field to represent The Jedi. On the other hand, I'm sure she'd appreciate learning from the Consulars and having access to the Jedi Library.

OOC, I know that she'd make a great Consular, since she has the background as a scholar and teacher (so she'd also be a good diplomat).

I don't want to force things, though. I prefer for my characters to develop of their own accord, in as natural a manner as possible.

Again, I feel overwhelmed since SWRP.net and SSC are new to me and I'm not very familiar with how to do things around here.

Thanks, again! ;)

Quite easily. So long as you don't mind a relative slow pace (1-2 posts/day).

Were you looking for a one off or a full on master/padawan relationship?

I'm playing a Force-centric character too whose works in similar fields I'd say just do what you feel Aldy should do. Don't worry, the SSC is a broad range of writers all coming to work together. Matsu Ike is Dune's mentor/friend and she is an artisan/engineer par excellence. Siobhan Kerrigan rips buildings apart with space magic. Thurion Heavenshield is a lightsaber adept. We're all cool kids.

If Aldy is going to take her first step into a larger world, who better to do it with than the Head Jedi Archaeologist? That said, I would imagine easing into the whole Jedi thing would be the way to go (especially since Aldy doesn't even realize that she is Force-sensitive; she just knows that she cannot touch anything or anyone without absorbing some of their history).

Perhaps start out with [member="Phylis Alince"], [member="Matsu Ike"], and/or [member="Dune Rhur"] inviting Aldy to assist them on a scholarly or archaeological expedition.

Over time, I hope that our characters will grow closer and that one or more will explain to Aldy about The Force. At that point, we could then look into Phylis taking Aldy under her wing as a student. I, for one, would like that, but I still have to stay true to Aldy's wishes and character.

Thanks very much you three! :D Your willingness to help me puts me a bit more at ease.

[member="Aldera Antilles"] | [member="Alcuin"] = Artifact Hunters. A coupling right there.

Aldera, you would be welcome to come and go from the Jedi Temple as you please. Same with any of the training grounds here.

Looks like you now have a master ;)

What Sio said regarding all types of force users etc. And there is no set Jedi Code here, even for the Jedi. They are allowed to follow which ever code they deem suits them. As long as everyone is 'good', or fights for the good guys .. all is good. :p

As for where you fit in with the archaeology?

[member="Phylis Alince"] since you are head of that department, why not create a SSC museum? in the The Coalition (IC) forums.

You could plan stuff.. :p

I know you have the poweeerrrrr....

You are having a similar problem to me, almost exactly. If you figure it out, let me know post-haste, eh?

Looks like we both have our answer! :)

I love the idea of an SSC Museum. I read the Tales of The Jedi trade paperback years ago, and I remember there being a Galactic Museum. I think that that (at least partially) got me to thinking about playing a Jedi Archaeologist. An SSC Museum will help further with immersion into my character.

Thanks, again! ;)

Awesome, if you want to contact Phylis or we can bump into each other at a dig, your choice.
Good question. Both Phylis and Aldera are in a current party thread, so that's one option (I'm not sure how they'd know to talk with one another, though -- unless Dune happens to mention that Phylis might be another good person with whom to discuss scholarly things).

More organic, I think, would be to have our characters meet on a dig. Especially since our dear Dr. Antilles is a brilliant scholar but a major social klutz (and probably a bit on the shy side, too) ;)

You dont have to have a master to reach knight, it just makes things easier. James here reached knight without a single training thread. heck, he doesn't eve know he uses the Force. :D It makes for interesting story and character development. Over time, James just came to get stronger in the Force as he did what he did. Hope that helps with some ideas. Good luck and cheers!
