The Eagle's Gate, the shield gate of Aegis Aeterna
STRENGTHS
- Encasing Shield - The shield is projected to protect exactly the area of the Spire, its calibration of extension done to ensure a flawless overlapping from the various pylons.
- Decentralised - The shield is fed by a great many pylons spread all over the Spire and the failure of one will not ensure the failing of the entire shield.
- Single Access - The shield, despite spanning nearly the size of a small continent, has only one access point, one shield gate, which you can pass through.
- Gigantic - The shield system is meant to protect a citadel the size of a state and is therefore impossible to relocate.
- High-End Computing - To ensure the shield works perfectly at all times, due to planetary crust movements, it has to be constantly calibrated and needs an immense amount of computing power, offering hard-point access hackers the possibility to disrupt the system.
- It Starts With One - If enough pylons should be disabled or destroyed, the shield will collapse entirely.
The Aegis Aeterna was designed for the single purpose of protecting the heart of Vandemarian rule and military might, the Spire. The massive dimensions of the fortress as well as its unique location, required a completely new approach to the shield itself. As an underground location, the shield needed to keep unwanted guests out from all possible directions, seamlessly. So a careful adjustment and calibration had to be done, making rock, ferrocrete and shield exist in continuous harmony of not touching each other - in some locations, by the width of a hair. It is a marvel of the Hegemonies capital, despite it being basically invisible and not even seen by those who live below it.
For the construction and purpose of the shield there was only one requirement - impenetrable protection. It was meant to prevent both an orbital bombardment to penetrate as well as stop individual agents from getting to the inside of the fortification.
