Lightsabers, like many weapons went through certain steps of creation that most are now ignorant. The modern form of lightsabers were only created after thousands of years of development and research, with Jedi and Sith both working on designs and eventually furthering the weapons into what they have become today. A part of this process was the creation and forging of newer and newer blades, eventually accumulating in the advent of the current modern form of Lightsabers with all the familiar components. This modern form of lightsaber is the most common, and the one that most people think of when they actually think of the word "lightsaber".
However, during the time of Jedi Master Rayna Sil these weapons were almost entirely unheard of, at least in this form.
Rayna Sil, like many other Je'daii Masters at her time were more commonly using weapons like the Protosaber, with their darkside counterparts utilizing things like forcesabers and the like. These weapons, although powerful, suffered form many disadvantages, chief among them their lack of mobility. Master Sil and many of her friends among the council discovered a disadvantage when fighting enemies, specifically during the crux of battles. The longer a fight went on, the more dangerous the Protosabers used by them became.
As such, new steps were taken in the development and Lightsaber technology. Rayna Sil worked with her peers, particular the being known as the Weapon Master, for nigh on a century. Developing and creating newer steps to allow the Lightsaber to develop further and become a better tool in the arsenal of the Je'daii Order. Eventually, as the one known as the Weapon Master created the first 'modern' lightsaber the design was spread out among the Order and during the Force Wars was applied almost universally to all those who would eventually call themselves the Jedi.
Rayna Sil, being a devotee of the Lightside and an argent supporter of the Order was one of the many Master's who joined the newly created Jedi Order. It was here that she continued her study of Lightsabers, were she taught the creation of these 'new' weapons and crafted the a weapon of her own design.
The weapon that she crafted, so early on in the history of the Jedi Order can easily be considered one of the first 'modern' lightsabers to ever exist. The blade was crafted not with beauty in mind, not with personality, but function. It's creation came at a time of emergency, of war and strife that the galaxy had never seen before. The weapon was made by Rayna Sil in order to help her fight those that she had once called brothers. It was this model of creation that saw to the simplicity of the blade. Once it contained a simple silver hilt, a cast not much more decorative than a simple pipe. The crystal inside of the saber was a pure blue, so bright it nearly burned white when the blade was activated. The sound of the saber was different from those of modern weapons, the odd thrum sounding more like a detached whir. From the base of the white-blue blade came odd flicks of color, plasma only barely held in by the ancient magnetic field.
The blade was one of the first lightsabers, a weapon that was crafted for something more than ceremonial purpose, a weapon crafted to fight in the Force Wars.
When Aela found the blade it was stooped and kept hidden beneath the body of a man frozen in carbonite. It had remained in the same spot for eons, kept mostly safe from the ethos of time and the crass sands of the world around it by Master Rayna Sil's frozen corpse. The silvery case around the hilt had wasted away, many of it's features and carvings and simply gone, and only the base structure of the lightsaber remained. The components stayed together, kept in a single piece by either the will of the force or structural placement.
No matter the cause, or the price, the weapon remained intact. It was kept as a single piece, an artifact of the force that reached back to the creation of the Jedi Order. It harbored all of the emotions of Master Rayna Sil. Her determination, her hope, her solemn word to teach and improve the Jedi Order. The Lightsaber survived where Master Sil could not, a token of her will to those who would eventually find her.
When exploring the galaxy in an attempt to finish a quest started on Odik II the young Jedi Marshall Aela Talith stumbled upon the corpse of Master Rayna Sil. Though at the time she did not understand it, she felt drawn to the old Master's frozen body. From beneath it she claimed the oddly structured lightsaber, keeping the blade, perhaps as a weapon, or perhaps as a reminder of the past.
