SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Continuing the variable design philosophy of Aurora Industries, the Odin Hypervelocity Cannon is designed with three different firing modes depending on the ammunition core or munitions in use by the gunnery crew:
    • The MHD Loadout, shortened from magnetohydrodynamic, makes use of a liquified alloy of neuranium, tungsten, and doonium that is suspended within a high gravity field ammunition core powered by isotope-5. When the Odin fires, it releases part of the liquified alloy and accelerates it down the barrel of the Odin at a velocity of 3,000 km/s utilizing a mixture of electromagnetism and the gravity-warping properties of isotope-5 to achieve such speeds. As the weapon fires, the alloy solidifies into a solid projectile that is designed to squash and shatter when it impacts against a target to release a devastating amount of force upon the target across a wide impact zone.
    • The MAC Loadout is similar in design to the MAC Loadout of the Ixion Mass Driver where it utilizes larger neuranium-infused doonium slugs from a solid core to launch projectiles at enemy targets at 2,000 km/s. Like the MHD Loadout, the slugs from these cores are designed to squash when they impact against a target to transmit the maximum amount of force upon a target area.
    • The Barrage Loadout makes use of specially designed munition shells developed by Aurora Industries, or shells supplied from other manufacturers modified for use by the Odin, to fire these shells at 2,000 km/s at targets.
STRENGTHS
  • The Odin can switch between three extremely devastating firing loadouts, depending on the ammunition core or munition in use, to deliver an extreme amount of firepower from across a battlefield or as an orbital weapon.
  • To ensure the system has enough power to keep the isotope-5 gravity manipulators and electromagnetic systems functional, each Odin has been tied into a dedicated Starscourge Reactor system scaled down to accommodate the cannon. The cannon can also make use of the energy capacitors from the reactor to overclock the rails and gravity manipulators along the barrel to launch projectiles at faster velocities at the cost of increased wear upon the systems.
  • Making use of isotope-5 gravity manipulators and thorilide shock absorbers, the Odin for its size has low recoil when firing its solid projectiles and very low recoil when making use of its MHD Loadout.
WEAKNESSES
  • Due to the extremely large size of the Odin, along with the need for dedicated power systems, it can only be mounted on Cruiser sized starships and larger or as a surface or station installation. Attempting to install it within anything smaller would be too much of a strain on the ship.
  • Due to the nature of the weapon, it does have reduced rates of fire.
  • If the weapon's ammunition core chamber is sabotaged in some way, the core will like smash through the bottom of the weapon due to its density and will render the weapon inoperable until it can be repaired. Likewise, if the Starscourge powering the Odin is damaged or becomes sabotaged, it won't be able to fire until the damage is repaired.
DESCRIPTION

Developed as part of Aurora Industries' Aeon Program, the Odin Hypervelocity Cannon was the company's first foray into designing a dedicated artillery weapon for itself instead of relying upon older technologies developed by partners or those in use among starship designers for decades. One of the first design innovations the team developing the Odin began with was making heavy use of isotope-5 and its gravity warping abilities, combined with repulsorlifts and electromagnetic rails, to launch projectiles at much faster velocities. Due to the ambitions of the team seeing the Odin as an artillery weapon, it mandated that the barrel and all the systems used for it needed to be installed on larger ships and have a fully dedicated power supply using Aurora's Starscourge Reactor System.

The second innovation was an evolution from the Ixion Mass Driver, and comparing notes with its design team, the Odin's team developed three different ammunition cores or settings for the Odin. The primary system was an evolution of the Stream Loadout from the Ixion, utilizing a molten liquid alloy of neuranium, tungsten, and doonium maintained under high pressure from isotope-5 gravity fields to main its liquid state. When the gunnery crew of the Odin fires the weapon, it releases part of the alloy into the barrel and fires it 3,000 km/s where upon the alloy hardens into a solid projectile that squashes and shatters upon impact with a target to transfer the full devastating kinetic force such velocities and density of projectile would achieve. The secondary system was an upscaled version of the Ixion's MAC setting, utilizing a larger version of the same neuranium-infused doonium core to fire massive slugs at, while reduced velocities, could still achieve impressively extreme amounts of damage.

The third firing setting was also an evolution from the Ixion called the Barrage Loadout that would make use of specially designed munition shells developed by the team, or modified shells from other suppliers and partners, to unleash more specialized artillery attacks on enemy ships and facilities. The design team was hoping to make use of contacts with Primo Victorian on direction on what sort of shells could be or should be produced for the Odin.
