- Continuing the design philosophy of the Entite Project, the Undin Ion Cannon has two different firing modes:
- When in Standard Setting, the Undin makes use of the negatively charged polyatomic ion particles created by the modified ion regulator to coat a small portion of ionized Sianteria plasma to fire a stronger ion cannon bolt that splatters against shields for a larger impact zone and to put enhanced stress on shields and electrical systems.
- When in Ion Pulse Setting, the Undin makes use of the modified plasma rotors to create a circular ionized plasma shot that acts much like those created by an ion pulse cannon, although on a smaller scale, that can be fired across a battlefield.
- Undin Ion Cannons can be configured as a single cannon or into various turret configurations depending on the ship design.
- As stated above, the Undin Ion Cannon has two different firing modes that ship crews can make use of during combat scenarios, being able to switch between them with a few button presses. It also gives the firing crews and the bridge officer mode flexibility in engaging an enemy, being able to have different parts of the ship firing differently than others to confuse or overwhelm their opponents.
- The Undin Ion Cannon retains the Aurora Industries' design philosophy of an enhanced firing rate for its ion cannons by utilizing a modified ion accu-accelerator while in Standard Setting.
- Like many Aurora Industries' weapon designs, the Undin has enhanced stopping power achieved through the company's Sianteria energy source and harnessing that energy. The Undin, like the Salamand, has its own internal power source that can be augmented by a ship's reactor, but allows the weapon to operate on its own without stressing the reactor if necessary.
- While the Undin is in the Ion Pulse Setting, the needed energy buildup and plasma discharge results in a lower firing rate than normal.
- The Undin does not suffer from the overheating issue the Salamand and Leamonde weapon systems have when they switch between fire modes, however switching from the Ion Pulse Setting to Standard Setting can take some time as the firing crews need to wait for the plasma rotors to slow and then need to clean out any particle buildup. If not done properly, the Undin will engage an emergency shutdown to make sure an overload doesn't occur.
- The ion pulses created by the Undin are not discriminate. They can just as easily disable friendly ships as enemy ships if friendlies are caught in the circumference of the ion pulse.
The third weapon design by Aurora Industries' Project Entite, the Undin Ion Cannon continues the theme of versatility while retaining the older design philosophies of enhanced firing rates and stopping power. Reviewing the older ion cannons used by the company, the Gremlin and Hydrus, and the data recovered from the first iteration of the Galactic Alliance in their research on ion pulse cannons, the design team decided to incorporate both sorts of ion cannons into the Undin.
The Standard Setting is much like a normal ion cannon, although with enhanced firing rates and stopping power. However, the design team couldn't leave it alone and designed the bolts that were fired a little differently for greater effect. Sianteria plasma forms the core of the bolt and then is surrounded by a negatively charged ion particle cloud contained by a magnetic field that, when it impacts against a shield or hull, releases the vast majority of the ionization in the impact zone but some of the energy is released in a splatted effect to attempt to overwhelm electronics and shields in a wider zone.
The Ion Pulse Setting utilizes Sianteria plasma and modified plasma rotors to energy and ionize the plasma and allows the Undin to have a wider area-of-effect in engagements as the cannon transitions to firing the circular ion pulse charges on a more conventional scale. The firing rate is reduced, due to charging time and to make sure particle buildup does not exceed safety limits, but the range of the weapon is greatly extended and the stopping power is further enhanced. The design team felt this new setting, while not nearly as powerful as the superweapon scale ion pulses, would be highly effective against enemy fighter craft, munitions, and smaller capital ships.
