- Combat Function: The 82nd is an airborne infantry regiment and its combat function encompasses all that entails. They specialize in the tactic of vertical envelopment, dropping from above and behind the enemy to cause chaos and havoc in their rear areas by attacking points of strategic interest such as supply depots, command centers, artillery positions and other such points. They achieve this goal by a variety of means such as grav-chute jumps, jetpack jumps and air assault by transports. Very rarely is the entire regiment dropped onto a single objective and instead each subordinate battalion is dropped on a objective designated to them.

- Shock and Awe: With their patented airborne tactics the 82nd often appear behind enemy lines and attack with the strength of a full infantry regiment in places that are usually less defended than the front lines
- Light and Maneuverable: Being a airborne unit the 82nd lacks any heavy equipment or vehicles and while this is a weakness in sustained combat it also makes the 82nd a light and maneuverable force and able to move around the battlefield faster paced than more heavily equipped units
- Lack of Heavy Gear: A weakness inherent in any light infantry unit the 82nd is rather lightly equipped, relying on small arms and a few man portable heavy weapons but lacking anything heavier than these weapons they aren’t meant to be used to attack well fortified strong points
- Often Fight Alone: Due to being dropped behind the lines during most of their operations the 82nd is often cut off from other Alliance units and supply lines and many times are surrounded by the enemy
The 82nd Airborne Infantry Regiment of the Alliance GADF Army was originally stood up as 82nd Light Infantry Regiment a few months before the Alliance came into conflict with the Enclave. Originally formed at Fort Winters on the world of Carida the 82nd would remain a garrison force on the world until they were called to serve at the Battle of Ryloth.
The 82nd would continue to serve with distinction for the years to come and eventually would transition from a normal light infantry unit and would instead be changed into a airborne infantry unit, training on grav-chute and jetpack drops and air assault tactics.
The first test of these new tactics would be when the 506th Airborne Infantry Battalion would be attached to the strike force deployed to Odacer-Faustin. There the 506th would prove the concept of the airborne infantry when they utilized two of their companies in a grav-chute assault to secure anti-aircraft positions before their second two companies followed up on this with an air assault to secure several enemy weak points behind the lines.
Their jubilation at their success was not to last long as during the defense of Coruscant three of the regiments four battalions, the 504th, 505th and 507th, where stuck on Coruscant and destroyed almost to the man during the heavy fighting to defend the world.
With seventy-five percent of the regiment completely combat ineffective the 82nd began the laborious process of rebuilding, many of the officers and NCO’s from the 506th being reassigned to the regiment’s new battalions, the 173rd, 187th and 555th, to give them more experience leadership.
During this rebuilding many recruits from across the Alliance would flood into the 82nd, coming from many worlds spanning the entirety of the Alliance’s territories. It was from these recruits that the 82nd would earn its nickname ‘All Alliance’ and from this their insignia would be born.
The 82nd is still in the process of rebuilding as of now the only fully equipped and manned of their battalions is the 506th but these men and women are more than ready to face whatever challenge they are faced with on the battlefield.
