When the Galactic Alliance meddled in the affairs of the Sith Empire at Mirial, and subsequently refused to recognize the Empire's right to hold territory as a sovereign nation, they had provoked the wrath of the nascent Sith-Imperial government. Retribution came swift and on wings of cleansing fire as the Sith Empire launched a destructive assault on the Alliance world of Thyferra, one of the primary bacta production worlds in the entire galaxy. The fighting was fierce and many died on either side, but ultimately the Sith Empire won out in the end and drove the Alliance defenders back.
And as retaliation for the Alliance's transgressions against the Empire, the entire world of Thyferra was subject to orbital bombardment that annihilated much of the surface forest and laid low any standing population centers. It was a message to the Alliance of the Empire's triumphant might, and a warning against continued intervention in the Sith Empire's expansion in the Tingel Arm.
To commemorate the victory, the Sith Emperor Darth Carnifex commanded his servants collect a large sample of the vitrified rock and ash that coated the planet's surface. From it he created a sphere of compressed and polished obsidian and ash that was aptly termed the Alliance's Lament.
