A brilliant Gree scientist developed the antimatter stabilizing chamber for better storage of antimatter, such that it may eventually be the most efficient power generation system in the galaxy. Antimatter reacts violently when put in contact with matter, as implied by the name. The energy released, given enough antimatter, was enough to power starships, but harnessing said power was extremely difficult. The stabilizing chamber was the first step to creating reactors that might even be able to power ships heading to other galaxies.
Alas, war came first.
A particularly entrepreneurial pirate kidnapped the scientist and forced him to use his technology to create weapons of a new breed. A rifle that could fire antimatter could be even more potent than some of the finest disruptors in the galaxy. He was stolen away to Cosm's Well, to a system where enough antimatter could be harvest to fuel these new weapons.
What happened next is unknown -- the shopkeeper who sells these weapons says he doesn't know any Gree scientist, nor pirates planning to be ahead of the curve on the next great arms race. What is known is that the AM-07 Heavy Antimatter Rifle is one of the most powerful handheld weapons out there, warranting the frankly ridiculous cost for the weapon and its ammunition.
It is a simple and elegant weapon, the sort where one points it at the target and with a pull of the trigger the target is no more. A competent sniper could reign terror on their enemies, given the weapon's extreme range and muzzle velocity (which clocks in at roughly 15,000 m/s), even without the unique antimatter. The nature of the ammunition means the antimatter reacts instantly once it comes in contact with a surface or object denser than gases found in planetary atmospheres. The reaction causes instant annihilation of nearby matter, the radius of which is determined by the density of said matter. Once the matter has been consumed, the shockwave caused by the energy release can cause even more destruction. This considered, the rifle could be classified more as an anti-armor weapon than an anti-personnel weapon. Additionally, the AM-07 is a railgun, meaning it has effectively no recoil or muzzle flash.
Still, the weapon is not without its flaws. The antimatter rounds are extremely volatile, and should they be disturbed prior to firing it could be catastrophic for the user. The weapon can only hold a single cell, so the user must reload after each shot. As antimatter only reacts with matter, targets that have energy, particle, and concussion shielding could potentially sustain several shots from the rifle before taking any significant damage. Due to the hair-trigger nature of the antimatter's activation, the rifle has effectively zero penetrating power, meaning dense cover or particularly thick armor can still be effective against the antimatter reaction.
