Am I Too Old Now?

I recently had to sit down and ask myself if I'm getting to old for this stuff. I mean, I was just about to make a 1989 Danny Glover reference to Lethal Weapon 2 as a way of reinforcing my point. But... I'm not sure if the kids on this website would get it? Ya know. Ugh.

*waits while the young'uns finish their google searches for Danny Glover and Lethal Weapon quotes*

Anyway...

I'm turning 30 this year. And while Star Wars is once again entering a new golden age under Disney's movie banner? I still can't help but wonder. Am I getting too old to be a fan writer? (The answer according to the giants JJ and KK is obviously no, but still. Lulz.) I'm wondering what you guys think about it.

Age and Star Wars? It's cool. Sure. ...But how weird is it really? Ya know.

...

Anybody got any stories they want to share? I'm in a musing mood this week. Lulz. :D :p

One of my biggest critics is my 60 year old father. He advises me on militant aspects of battle, explosives, etc. As well as reads, critics, and aids in developing my story lines.

Age with SW? Not even but a number. They share no relevance lmao

I have the same problem there. My own father is a gun nut, so whenever I have a question about guns or anything else, he gives me very helpful insite, and when I ask about possible star wars ideas for it, we rift off of each other. I know a lot about the lore and the mystics of the force and such, but he knows the tactics and the equipment of starwars. Considering as a kid who grew up watching Star wars, he has read all the books to date. *which is a feth ton, I still don't know how he does it*

He actually gave me a lot of inspiration for my characters.

My mother has also helped as well. I remember when one time I was at a family dinner and I was talking to my cousin about it, she asked me about it as well. One thing led to another, so whenever we talk, and she has the time, she ask about what I have done with my "Grand Jedi Xander Carrick" Because she has told me a crap ton of fatherly things that my dad has done, that I never knew he did. And I have poured that into my own father figure of a character. She is turning 53 this year.

As well my father turned 58 this year. So um. Jay, You have at least 28 years left of star wars to sift through.

I turned 28 in March. I play magic the gathering. I play Dungeons and Dragons edition 3.5. My favorite Xbox games (while debatable as to which) is the Fallout series and the Elder Scrolls series. I watch cartoons fairly often whether Dragon Ball Z (which I have season 1 downloaded to my Xbox) or something like Drawn Together or Bob's Burgers. I just finished a manga series called Tokyo Ghoul about two weeks ago, well all the ones available on the Manga Reader app.

I could go on but my point has been made. Age is a number. The question you should be asking yourself is this: Does doing this in my free time make me happy?

If you're enjoying yourself, Game On!

Otherwise why would we log on?

[member="Zephyr Carrick"] - In 28 years I still hope to have the privilege of peeking through [member="Sarge Potteiger"] 's bathroom window at night. Erm. I mean writing fan smut. Erm. Sorta. :p

[member="Zenva Vrotoa"] - That is one of the most beautiful replies to a thread I have ever seen. You are a wonderful person and I wish you immortality, a lifetime of pizza, and free uncensored access to that one Anime's perfect soundtrack anytime you want. :D

See you space cowboy...

I would totally invited you to the magic game I'm trying to set up this afternoon but you probably don't live anywhere near me. Internet friends suck sometimes, never can have them over for a drink and a game lol.

[member="Jay Scott Clark"]
Awww Jay, trying to melt my heart over here with your nice words and your desire to write smut.

Then you go and steal it with that last line.

You're so dreamy right now. *Sighs*

[member="Zenva Vrotoa"], I would love to be able to play my Black deck. see if it as good as people say it is. However, I do agree with you. Age is just a number. Considering that I am 10 years younger than [member="Jay Scott Clark"] here, and I hope that I will still have my "childish hobbies" well into the future. I love them too much to give them up.

In fact, you could probably as a few exes of mine what they think about it? I am sure they would not like it.

[member="Jay Scott Clark"] I'm 30 and I don't feel too old.

When does age put a limit on what you love and are passionate about? If we let age decide that, we'll be cabbages by the time we're 50.

I hope to be still writing and exploring new SW media well into my later years because it gives me pleasure.

Is Steven Spielberg too old to be directing? Is Helen Mirren too old to be acting? Nope - they enjoy it...granted they get paid....BUT age shouldn't limit you.

If this gives you pleasure, keep on doing it. Don't let age give you a reason to question your passion because that is what makes you human.

I just turned 28 and wish I still had the time to write. I first started at SWFans in 2000, so I have been part of this culture for over half of my life. It has always been my creative outlet of sorts. I have never mentioned this hobby to any of my real life friends, and my parents think I stopped this way back around 2002. So I don't really have anyone judging me outside of the forums. Even my fiancee doesn't know about this hobby. Unfortunately, I had to pretty much retire after law school. Between constantly working during trials (I have billed 215.4 hours this month as of last night) and spending time with the s/o when not at trial, I just do not have the time to commit to writing anymore.

Yessss, random internet people making me feel young. Here i am only 26 thinking the same shit.

But our generation in paeticular has a problem in that we're constantly being told that we're useless and need to buckle down like our parents/grandparents did.

You know, because the folks growing up in the 60s and 70s totally didnt write their own program.

So we follow the hobbies we were kids with. So what, fuck the baby boomers they never changed why should we bother to conform their archaic notions of what an adult is. We're the ones who are going to have to deal with the changing world anyway, and of thats with a star wars shirt and anime hat on, bring it.

That feeling when you write your reply on the phone hours ago and it never actually posted... *glares at the device*

You know, I'm turning 27 in July, and I've thought about this. I will have been writing Star Wars for ten years by the summer and I've put a lot of energy into it through the years. Sooo many characters (not by Cira's standard, of course, lol). But there was a time when I could maintain 20-30 characters easily, write nights, finish threads before dawn... honestly, I don't know who that person even was. Sure as hell wasn't me...

But basically, I've taken a good year and a half off from writing Star Wars. Tried something else because I wasn't sure I could write much. But you know what I realized? I love Star Wars. I love writing. I love my characters. And as long as that is true, I can't never really retire and forget them. It's not even a thing of age (how much I can take on at a time, how much time I'm on the board and so on does). But still, as long as I have that drive, I'll just keep coming back.

They're right though. Age is just a number. It's your mindset. But you know what's timeless? Roger Murtaugh. So don't start this off with being old just 'cos younglings won't get a Danny Glover and Lethal Weapon reference. I was born in 1989. I just had great parents who put me in front of the TV to watch great movies. So really, if younglings don't know a Lethal Weapon reference, tell them to go catch up 'cos they don't know what they're missing :p

[member="Jay Scott Clark"] as someone else who turned 30 this past February, I have to say that no, you are not too old. Heck I didn't even start RP in a style similar to this until i was in my 20's. Kept with it ever since and as long as I can manage to find time to do some writing I will.

I'll just be over here, the youngest in this thread at seventeen... *whistles*

But seriously, age is just a number, and if you find something you love there's no reason to stop doing it just because you're however old. I was first introduced to Star Wars by an old friend's father, and he was around forty at the time. If he hadn't had us watch Revenge of the Sith with him that night I wouldn't be here, so I don't see how age is a bad thing, or how it matters at all. Star Wars is fantastic in part because it's made for people of all ages to enjoy, and that's what makes everything about its fans so diverse. Just keep doing what makes you happy, because at the end of the day, that's what matters.

Young or old, we're all here writing on a Star Wars RPing site, so none of us have much room to talk, honestly. :p
