Nick Sept

Worst Ghost in the Galaxy
"Esteemed ladies and gentlemen of the senate," Nick Sept, clone turned soldier turned vigilante turned senator, a man with more titles than any fellow ought to have before he turned twenty, at least chronologically--biologically was another matter--began to speak in his booth. A small holosign lit up under him, noting his title of Senator of Cartao.

"It is an honor to speak with those assembled. An honor that I would not have been ranted, had it not been for those who would show mercy in the right time. I was a soldier, and I am a clone. I was bred, by my makes in the government formerly know as the CIS, for the purpose of war. For reasons of my own, I joined the Republic army, hoping that my experience could give me the opportunity to make the lives of clones under the Republic banner better than it was under the Confederacy's reign," he said nodding calmly.

"After Lasedri's failed coup, it became abundant that the rights of clones, and their usage as armed forces, continues to disenfranchise them. While he have affirmed in our declarations to not support slavery, we have commissioned, bred, and demanded the existence of an entire army, with no concern to its own individuality or rights. Worse yet, chips were implanted in their brains, in order to control them!" He slammed his fist on the table, a dramatic and sincere gesture. He was angry. Who wouldn't be mad? What reasonable man or woman would say it was fair that these clones were born simply to serve Republic interests, but then were forcibly given puppet strings to ensure their false loyalty? It was an outrage to any sentient being who claimed to believe in rights for the common people of the galaxy. It was an outrage.

"As a clone," He said, clearing his throat, "No, as a citizen of the Republic, I implore my fellow senators to consider the amendment I have proposed, an addition to the text of Resolution 6240" He brought the original document on the central display so other could view it. He put his addendum beneath it:

"Whereas the right of Sentients include and demand a freedom from slavery in order to allow democratic freedom for those in the galaxy,

And whereas clones are deemed sentient individuals, free to pursue their own path in the galaxy,

Let it be resolved that the government of the Republic never again demands the usage of cloned sentients conscripted into service, either for military use or elsewise.

And let it be further resolved that the usage of mass cloning for military conscription be viewed in the same context, both legally and morally, as enslavement.

And let it also be resolved that all clones created by the Republic, it's members, it's institutions, or within its borders, are free to pursue their own lives as full citizens of the Republic, in accordance with the laws of the Republic, including, but not limited to miltary, civil, and public service.

And let it be finally resolved that every clone wishing to stay within the territory of the Republican government shall be granted the full privileges of citizenship, including military benefits for those who have served within the armed forces, and a right to vote for representatives in their offices."

He gave the others a few moments to upload the document. "Gentlebeings of the Republic, I come to you as a clone, asking that my brothers and sisters be allowed to be free men, and have their rights universally recognized. I do not demand vengeance, or legal penalty, for those who created us. However, I do demand that we as a republic acknowledge what our hubris has done. Clone armies are given no choice, no opportunity. They are raised as soldiers, sent to dies as soldiers, and rarely allowed the legal agency to removes themselves form the role without fear of being tried for insubordination. I must demand this, Senators. Let my people go. Let them be at peace. Let every clone decide their own fate. Some of them will likely remain in the military, some of them may not. But they deserve to have their rights affirmed, with the same level we have done before. We deserve that," he said, his tone turning slightly wistful.

He waited to see who would agree. Who would oppose. This was not merely a measure of the Senate's will to act, it was a measure of his own status. In their eyes, was he a person? Were the clones that fought for and against them on Chazwa people? Or simply munitions? He'd have his answer today.

(OOC: I have tagged a few non-senators who I felt may wish to bear witness to this for personal reasons)

Khyros listened to the impassioned speech and read the document. Overall he supported this amendment with his whole being, his people having played god with genetics and cloning for millennia. He did see one thing that needed to be addressed, however. He tapped a few keys on his console and highlighted the bit, then signaled he wished to speak. When he was given the floor, he rose.

"Senator Sept, I do hope that I speak for all present when I say that I fully support this amendment. There is one issue, though, with the wording. Please forgive me for lawyering about it, but for the security of the Republic, I must." He pulled up the quote to the holo viewer.

Nick Sept said:
And let it be finally resolved that every clone wishing to stay within the territory of the Republican government shall be granted the full privileges of citizenship, including military benefits for those who have served within the armed forces, and a right to vote for representatives in their offices."
"I support this message, but the way it is worded would possibly allow the clones of other nations who 'Wish to stay within the territory of the Republic' to merely cross our border and be granted full citizenship without any of the requirements other sentients need to go through. I propose that the language for this line be changed to "And let it be finally resolved that every clone created within and wishing to remain within the territory of the Galactic Republic shall be granted full citizenship commensurate with any other natural born citizen, including benefits for military and public service for those who have served in such positions, and the right to vote for elected officials in the same capacity as any Republic citizen."

Faith had said during her campaign she believed the clones deserved to have rights, she still believed that. She read the proposal from Senator [member="Nick Sept"] she looked up agreeing with Senator [member="Khyros Sunblade"].

"Perhaps it should say something about clones that wish to cross borders having to apply for asylum. Would not want the borders of the Republic to be so wide open that it creates an opening for someone to cross and actually be a terrorist." Faith paused it didn't sound right, it sounded off.

But she was just saying that she didn't want someone to impersonate clones cross the border blow things up and then blame it on the clones.

Sept considered this. He nodded thoughtfully, scribbling some notes down on his a datapad, considering the language at hand. He wanted to provide asylum fro clones fleeing less decent jurisdictions, but he did have to consider the ramificatiosn of border law and the recent instability. "How about this, then..."

He pushed a few buttons and some new text came on screen.

And let it be finally resolved that clones originating in Republic space are deemed full citizens of the Republic, and that clones may be viewed as sentients in all regards to republic law, allowing them to seek asylum or immigrate to the Republic within the full extent of the law.

"There. I think that provision will prevent abuse of the law, but still allow asylum-seeking or immigration in regards to existent laws," he said, smiling slightly. So far, the reception had been rather positive. This was good. As much as the clones and the people of Cartao needed this, so did the Republic. They took the opportunity to push themselves back to being a moral nation again. This was a step in the right direction--he hoped.

He nodded to Mister Sunblade. "Do you feel the wording is within decent precedents now, Senator Sunblade?"

Khyros looked over the wording. The issue with a lot of legal statements was the balance. Too many times lawyers got overly wordy and missed an created a convoluted loophole, and others they got to sparse and missed an obvious loophole. Khyros tried to find any loopholes in the new statement, but after a few moments he smiled and nodded.

"It looks good to me. You have my full support for this bill."
