Bootiful.

Here's one that I prefer, mostly because its clean swordplay better reflects the duration of a duel, I'd say.
Just my two cents. :p

I've only really had the chance to train with swords through Iaido and Kenjutsu. The techniques generally don't carry over too well to Makashi, but work quite well with Djem So and Shii Cho.

I want to start classes so bad. But there are no military sabre programs near me. T_T

Same here. I took Iaido for my Aikido program!

We have HEMA all over the place now, and I'm loving it. <3

Well, you can always take the core principles of any martial art and apply them in combat writing; make it more personalized, if you will.

In general, though, I actually consider the rapier to be the closest to a lightsaber, in terms of weight distribution and balance, so I tend to combine that with the military sabre for optimal Makashi results. :p

We had Kashima Shin-Ryu influences in our Aikido :D Unfortunately I had to move, and the local club was closed down due to lacking members and funding. I use the philosophy and quite extensively in my Jedi writing and some of the techniques in hand-to-hand.

This is true. I do use the principles and some of the more basic ideas for all forms of combat. Staying behind the point; working with the opponents cuts; generally footwork. It's all good stuff.

I really thirst for some HEMA and military sabre experience. Did so even before I started writing Makashi. Actually, I think that's why I started writing with Makashi in the first place. Alas, they're so far only set up in the real cities here, and I'm still far into the countryside. Perhaps I'll slither my way to Oslo at the end of my Bachelor's degree :) They have quite a few schools of swordsmanship in there.

Honestly, learning a little basic swordplay IRL was the best thing that ever happened to my dueling. I'm way too uncoordinated to ever really be good, but just picking up a weapon and learning to use it did wonders for my writing game.
