The Lion King
So, I've been entertaining an idea for a long-running storyline for a while, now.
It concerns the Valkyri species, located on the planet of Midvinter. It is a place of perpetual winter, even though it shouldn't be, and it's only getting colder each year. It's getting so bad that even the hardened and proud Valkyri are having problems with the cold, as it keeps ruining harvests and kills off the wildlife, ultimately forcing the predatory species to look for food within the Valkyri livestock, adding to the deteriorating state of the pagan people. The cause of this everlasting winter is unknown in technical terms, but the Valkyri believe it was Odiir himself that froze the planet at the urging of the trickster god, Velkar. Whatever the case, the natives cannot hope outlive the harshness of their homeplanet, and thus they are in need of relocation. There is also talk of the dead stalking the wilds, pale as the snow itself and reeking of death (think Whitewalkers from "Game of Thrones").
Now, the Valkyri are a too proud a species to just admit they need help from any outsider, not to mention the fact that they refuse to leave their ancient home they believe to have been created by their Gods of Old. However, someone with enough clout and authority could persuade them to go along with any evacuation plans. Someone who happens to be of Valkyri blood, without ever realising it. Thurion Heavenshield never knew his parents, but the truth of the matter is that his father was a Valkyri, who took a human wife and settled on Pelagon long before either Thurion or his brother were born. This father of his happened to be the son of the last High King of Midvinter, who died of old age and ushered in a new war for the throne among his people, as is custom. His son lost the war, and upon realising this he fled and ended up on Pelagon, where he met Thurion's future mother.
Thurion doesn't know of his heritage or about the Valkyri species whatsoever, much like anyone else in the galaxy, so I need a way for him to find out about them. I was thinking perhaps he and @[member="Kida Ravos"] could get stranded or crash there somehow (still working out the details) and Thurion gets injured in the process, meaning they need to find shelter from the cold and a healer for him. They eventually find a small village where there is an elderly seer who manages to heal him as well as tell him of his heritage. That way he'll earn the respect and goodwill required to, say, persuade his people to allow the Levantine Sanctum to come and evacuate them to Sanctum space where they will be able to put themselves to good use and contribute to the Levantines.
Granted, this is still in planning stage and as such I'd love to hear your input and feedback regarding all this. Where do we put them all, considering they thrive in such a harsh environment? Do we build a new planet for them, one that isn't struck with complete and everlasting winter all year? Is Midvinter too far away for safe evacuation, seeing how it's on the far edge of Republic space? I'd like you all to let me know what you think of all this. I'd say it'd be worth the effort if only for the reward of having giant space vikings on our side, but that's just me.
