The Anchorite Archival Droid was developed in the later years of the Second Great Hyperspace War as a way to aid in the training and teaching of new younglings while the Knights and Masters were off fighting the Maw in the unknown regions. They held a repository of knowledge, skills, and tools to help young Jedi grow in the absence of organic teachers. Initially developed in small numbers for just the Coruscant temple, their production was ramped up in the years following the defeat of the Maw, their like becoming common assistants to Jedi researchers, filling the ranks of Archivist armies, and guiding younglings through the vine-ridden ice caverns of Ilum. Based off off of ancient Old Republic Jedi lightsaber construction droids, these droids also fill a similar purpose, holding a shared repository of every lightsaber constructed since the first Anchorite droid walked Coruscant's halls. Individual droids also have access to the Jedi holonet repository of archival information limited to their rank as appropriate meaning they also held a database of every Jedi in the New Jedi Order and cursory knowledge of affiliated Jedi Orders across the galaxy.
The droids were also programed with basic lightsaber forms, though their frame is not made for combat like their cousins, the KJ-S Series Jedi Page droids. But they can instruct in the basics of forms 1-4 and can be programmed to hold more complex information and styles. Even though they themselves could not perform advanced techniques they could quickly search Jedi databases to search for saved holochron recordings.
The Anchorite Archival Droids were named for the heroic group of Jedi sympathizers that aided the Hidden Path during the years of the Empire who aided in reconstructing parts of the destroyed Jedi Archives.
