In the continuing arms race between the Galactic powers, Elatar Enterprises recognized a need for a more potent yet portable weapons system, and through much trial and error their research and development team came up with the idea of using the antiparticle of a proton, an antiproton as the basis for this new weapons system. When an antiproton collides with a proton a massive amount of energy is discharged, an antiproton annihilation can be observed in a gamma-ray burst where the energy is contained within a magnetic field and travels for a significant distance before the energy finally dissipates.
An antiproton is just a single piece of a gamma-ray burst but it is where the high energy potential comes from, by itself, it has no cohesion and requires a method of containment to make feasible its application to military needs. In early tests wrapping antiproton annihilations in a magnetic field has proven quite effective.
