It is also useful because, after the fight, we can have some exposition between us three and establish potential friendships. All we need is to write out the start of the thread and boom; let's see who starts the fight and what happens leading up to us getting to know each other.

Considering your background I would say he is looking for a position of power and/influence. Factions is the way to go if you are having problems coming up with ideas on your own. Faction members help each other to keep the rp going adter all.

Nate might be a bit stubborn but not stupid (from what I understand) so I would contact one of the minor factions with a clear military branch and ask to meet one of their IC leaders to discuss a position in their ranks. One of the Imperial factions, like the "empire" or the "galactic empire" comes to mind for a power hungry slightly force sensitive military type of character.
