GENERAL INFORMATION
Name: ALF-112A // Arkanian Lethargic Flu (ALF) // The Lullaby Plague
Designation: Non-sentient.
Origins: A mutated but naturally occurring virus on Arkania.
Average Lifespan: 12-24 hours
Estimated Population: At time of mutation, Planetary, with potential to move to Inter-Planetary.
Description: At a glance the ALF-112A virus appears identical to any common cold or flu virus, such as the ones that frequently infect planetary populations and space stations. However, it is a mutated variant of a historical flu-like disease from Arkania known as Arkanian Lethargic Flu. The new strain is highly virulent and exceedingly deadly, making it rather difficult to control.
Like a typical flu virus, ALF progresses in distinct stages, but its symptoms are fast-acting and severe:
- Stage 1 - Flu Symptoms: Starting from a few hours after exposure, the disease can cause aches and pains, fever, coughing, sneezing, and intense headaches. This is the primary stage in which the disease spreads, as flu symptoms can be very mild at the onset. Cold and flu symptoms can last up to a week.
- Stage 2 - Encephalitis: From around 12 hours after exposure, cold and flu symptoms develop into intense headaches, confusion, irritability and personality changes, and intense body and muscle aches.
- Stage 3 - Drowsiness: Around 24 hours after the encephalitis stage, ALF causes drowsiness that over several hours develops into a coma. This stage can last up to 3 days, and is usually accompanied by fits of wakefulness and activity for a few minutes at a time.
- Stage 4 - Rigor: Following the drowsiness stage, a period of wakefulness is accompanied by painful stiffness of the limbs and eventual paralysis. This stage can take some time to set in.
- Stage 5 - Death: Another wave of drowsiness follows the rigor, and eventually leads to a second comatose stage in which organ failure occurs across the body. During this, the brain becomes too damaged to function, and results in death after about 1-2 hours.
ALF primarily spreads through infected body fluids, typically through airborne means as fluid is ejected through sneezing and coughing. ALF can also spread through contaminated surfaces, and close proximity with infected persons.
Following infection, life expectancy for the ALF-112F strain varies from a few days to a maximum of a single week, and is particularly deadly to the sick and those with compromised immune systems.

Distinctions: Barely distinct from other similar flu viruses, the ALF-112A virus is initially difficult to detect, though medical professionals have no trouble testing for it once it has been isolated and identified.

Force Sensitivity: Non-Sensitive
Strengths:
[+] Virulent: Unlike earlier forms of ALF, ALF-112A is incredibly virulent, and likely to infect a host after even a minor exposure to the virus.
[+] Airborne: As it’s related to the flu virus, ALF-112A can be spread through airborne particles from an infected person.
Weaknesses:
[-] Deadly: The mutated version of the ALF virus results in much more severe symptoms in infected hosts. Rapid progression of the disease and high death rates means in many cases the virus only survives in a host for a matter of days
[-] Short lifespan: Outside a host body, the ALF-112A virus is incapable of surviving for long, with most of the virus dying off on a surface by 12 hours, and almost all of the virus dying by 24 hours outside the body.
[-] Curable: The mutated strain of ALF-112A is curable, but since it is a newly emerged disease, little research has gone into combating it.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Arkanian Lethargic Flu, or ALF, is a disease that has existed on Arkania for longer than living memory. Usually it appeared in small outbreaks, spreading to perhaps a few dozen, or more rarely a few hundred unlucky Arkanians. Throughout history, it was somewhat romantically referred to as the ‘Lullaby Plague,’ in reference to the distinguishing symptom of ALF: the uncontrollable loss of consciousness and distortions to sleep patterns.
ALF-112A however, is a different beast entirely. The mutated strain appears to have emerged naturally on Arkania in 853 ABY and has been found to be much more virulent than related strains of the disease, and Arkania has already seen several severe outbreaks since the disease’s appearance.
