Taking the idea of an astromech droid and modifying it for use with ground vehicles was actually quite simple for its designers. Through the changing of its mode of locomotion and the software of the droid for maintenance and vehicle mounted weapons control. Overall the droid is just an astromech for your tank, with the capability to defend itself of course.
