- Exposed Rider; While Shielded by the Twinned Barriers - Should they Fail, the Rider would be Directly Exposed to Incoming Fire.
- Semi-Sentient War Mount; When paired, the War Droid is a Nigh-Unstoppable Force of Destruction. If the Rider's killed, the War Droid will seek Vengeance at all Costs before going Dormant.
- Shipbreaker - While capable of "Clawing" through Conventional Starship Armour and Hull Plating, Unconventional and Exotic Materials may Negate or Restrict the Cutting Progress.
- Shield-breaker - Incapable of Punching Holes in Frigate-sized Shields by itself. Multiple War Droids would be Required, with Multiple Squadrons being needed to Punch through Cruiser-sized Shields and beyond.
- Hard-holo Shielding - While a potent Defensive Measure, if the Emitters are Damaged or Destroyed, the Hard-holo Shielding's potency will be Crippled, dependant on the Damage Sustained.
- PTREOSAUR Mass-driver - While offering an incredible Lethality, the Mass-driver suffers from Limited Magazine capacity. Thus, mounted-Riders are cautioned to pick their shots carefully, as they might constantly have to return to their Carrier for subsequent Reloads.
- Ground Vehicle - Denies the Rider the War Droid's fighting claws, as they become a method of Propulsion.
In the ancient past, the Basilisk War Droid wasn’t something that was originally of Mandalorian origin nor make. Instead, it was a semi-sentient combat droid that hailed from the world of Basilisk, and designed by the natives of that now barren world. The Basiliskan’s were intelligent reptilians, with tough hides, sharp claws, and the ability to fly. There were even rumours about their War Droids being modeled in their own image. However, during the first of the Mandalorian Crusades, the Basiliskan’s sought to poison their world to deny it’s secrets to their conquerors. Through alacrity, and strength of arms, the ancient Mandalorian Crusaders managed to capture what remained of the Basiliskan population and kick-started the process that would see them degenerate from highly-intelligent beings, to nothing more than domesticated war mounts.
It is unknown when these captured and degenerating Basiliskan’s began producing these War Droids in their own image. But, when the first Mandalorian Crusaders utilized them against their many enemies? They had devastated all that were arrayed before them. With toughened hides and advanced weaponry, these ancient War Droid’s were capable of amazing feats in both spatial theatres, and within a planet’s atmosphere itself. As they were made in the image of their Basiliskan designers, these War Droids were equipped with a pair of fighting claws - which was wholly unique to the realm of dogfighting and spatial combat. Starfighters were torn apart, not through the sheer firepower that these War Droid’s brought to bear, but through physical contact as well.
Not only was it effective against foes that were prepared to throw themselves at their enemies with conventional tactics, but it was a potent psychological tool as well - since many Starfighter pilots of the era feared running afoul of a Mandalorian Crusader mounted atop a War Droid.
However, over the many centuries and brutal defeats that the Mandalorian Crusaders suffered, such a fearsome legacy was all but forgotten. The War Droid’s too were believed to have become extinct, with what few remaining semi-sentient combat droids having committed themselves to an eternal slumber - after the demise of their former riders. But, through some miracle of miracles, the Death Watch and their Crusade found themselves in a glorious position. With some War Droids having survived throughout the Eons, and giving birth to new iterations - each version seemed to inherit some qualities of the original, but not the whole. They were treated as nothing more than glorified starfighters, or airspeeders… but never both.
Through their contacts and stolen production facilities, however, the Death Watch was able to overcome this divisive barrier and marry the two halves into one.
Equipped with a coterie of Sublight and atmospheric thrusters and engines, the fourth iteration of the Basilisk War Droid was capable of smoothly transitioning from etheric flight in the near-vacuum of space, to readily defying the forces of gravity through a combination of anti-gravitic repulsors and guidance thrusters. This versatile suite of navigational engines made the War Droid into an incredibly agile weapons platform, capable of pulling off complex evasive maneuvers with relative ease - both in the depths of space, and ensnared within the atmosphere of various gravitic environments. While not as impressive as the agility, the War Droid’s speed within both environ’s made it capable of keeping pace with most conventional Space Superiority Starfighters. A feat in-and-of itself, nothing to balk at.
Seeking to revive that potent legacy of terror and mastery over the stars, the Death Watch saw fit to outfit their newest creation with an advanced suite of weaponry. The first of these additions centred around the fighting claws that made the Basilisk War Droid so dangerous in the past. These melee weapons were enhanced behind their durable construction through a series of advances made in plasmatic technologies, which sheathed the fighting claws in a crackling energy field that was capable of tearing through a starship’s hull with relative ease. Naturally, the durability and destiny of the starship’s hull needed to be taken into question as some materials were more resistant to kinetic damage than others. But, that’s where the rest of the War Droid’s weaponry was brought into consideration, as it was outfitted with a veritable armoury ship-cutting tools that could be adapted to the Rider’s needs.
While the ancient Basilisk War Droids housed a plasmatic shockwave generator as it's primary weapon, the newest iteration exchanged that exotic technology for something a bit more conventional. A single PTEROSAUR Mass-driver formed the core of the War Droid’s armament, which gave the War Droid a considerable advantage over it’s starbound cousins. With a hybridized combination mass-driver at the speartip of this design, these War Droids were capable of bringing small-scale ship-killing ordinance into the spatial arena. While it wasn’t anywhere near as powerful as the versions that were fitted to Capital Ships, that weapon alone would be enough to threaten almost anything that stood in its way. Even the mightiest of Star Destroyers could find themselves crippled when their shields were breached, and a mass-driven round from a starfighter cores through their command bridge.
Sadly, as the War Droid was a small weapons platform, they were only able to carry a single magazine into battle. With the incredibly small ammunition capacity, such lethality was best deployed sparingly - lest the mounted Crusader be forced to make resupply runs back towards a friendly carrier.
To further flesh out the armament of the newest version of the Basilisk War Droid, it was equipped with four Ion disruptors. These weapons were devastating when utilized against organics as the highly concentrated beams of ionized plasma would tear apart their victims at the molecular level, in a similar-enough fashion to conventional disruptors. However, where they differed from their destructive kin, was that when deployed against vehicles - these Ion disruptors held the possibility of disabling their electronic systems. Naturally, this again would depend on the materials utilized in the vehicle’s construction, and whether or not they were adequately shielded from the abundance of Ionic energy surging through their delicate systems of circuitry. But, despite that defining factor, having the capability to knock-out an enemy’s electronic systems made it all the easier to claim victory.
From there, the Basilisk War Droid was equipped with four Phased-Pulse Cannons. While similar in many respects to the standardized laser cannons used by conventional starfighters, the Pulse Cannons leaned more towards their rapid-firing plasmatic roots. These weapons didn’t simply release a concentrated bolt of plasma, sheathed in a magnetic spear, but rather in an even more concentrated form. The size of the bolt was considerably reduced to that of an orb of coruscating energy, but through this reduction - the true ferocity of the Pulse Cannon came to light. With their smaller size, the time to create these smaller bolts was also reduced - allowing for more of these destructive bolts of fusion-based plasma to be created in a relatively short amount of time.
Thus, the phased-pulse cannons, which were comparable to heavy laser cannons in terms of destructive output, were the perfect rapid-fire weaponry that was capable of swiftly battering down an enemy’s defences - or strafing a collection of stationary or moving targets with plasmatic hellfire - with relative ease.
Lastly, the Basilisk War Droid was equipped with two FlexTube Launchers that housed an internalized payload of variable munitions. As one would suspect, these munitions would have to be pre-loaded into the War Droid before an engagement begins, as it was a long and arduous process to reload the Warhead launchers through more conventional means. Nevertheless, if a mounted Crusader was able to outfit their War Droid with a small variety of warheads, they would be capable of dominating the spatial battlefield through their adaptability and cunning foresight. For example, if their loadout was geared towards punching holes through a Capital Ship’s deflector array, they would equip themselves accordingly with proton charges and T-33 plasma torpedoes.
When combined with their main cannon as well as the twinned braces of Ion disruptors, this newest iteration was capable of spearing through an enemy’s shields - which then allowed them to start causing havoc within the erected barrier. Naturally, this factor again was wholly dependent on the target they sought to breach, as some deflector shields were stronger or more adaptive than others. But, as they all operated on similar enough properties - when more War Droid’s were brought into the equation and were capable of concentrating their destructive firepower? Well, there was a chance that the tiniest of holes would open up, allowing these nimble combat droids to weave through the projected barriers and wreak havoc amongst the delicate systems protected beneath.
Thus, with the lethality factored into the design - alongside it’s defensive matrix and semi-sentient nature, the aptly named Avenger - Class War Droid would serve as a capable War Mount for a select handful of Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders for years to come. None would be capable of denying the potency of this design, nor the courage and spirit of those that rode them into battle. They would be the heralds of destruction, as they tore the heavens apart in their quest for vengeance, and they would become the scions of the ancient ways; reborn in the tumultuous times of the modern era.
