  • Manufacturer: Merrill-Valkner Systems Engineering (MVSE)
  • Affiliation: Open Market
  • Homeworld (optional): Zonju V
  • Production: Limited
  • Modularity: Reduced capabilities if mixed with other metals
  • Material: Proprietary alloy of rylith and barab ore
PHYSICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Alloy
  • Weight: Moderate
  • Resistances
Blasters and Plasma Weapons: Very High
  • Kinetic: Average
  • Lightsabers: Low
  • Radiation: Very High

[*]Color: Matte black
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Absorbs and channels energy.
STRENGTHS
  • Absorbs and channels incoming EM/thermal energy.

WEAKNESSES
  • High-powered kinetic weapons (hypervelocity guns, shatterguns, high-caliber slugthrowers, etc.) can punch through baralyth armor with relative ease.
  • High-end ultrasonic vibroblades can cut through baralyth armor.
  • If baralyth armor experiences an extreme and sustained influx of energy, the systems that convert released energy into usable power may overheat. Any number of Bad Things could result, from softened armor to lightly toasted crew.
DESCRIPTION
Baralyth was designed to do exactly one thing: serve as an inert armor equivalent to molecular shields. Molecular shielding absorbs incoming energy weapons fire and redirects a portion of it to the target’s own systems, generally weapons. Molecular shielding is useless against physical/kinetic attacks, such as bullets, boarding attempts, or brute force. Nevertheless, it remains a popular high-end choice for starship designers. MVSE developed baralyth because molecular shields are not appropriate for many starship models.

Baralyth comprises a proprietary blend of barab ore and rylith. Rylith is noted for its ability to absorb and store energy; barab ore not only absorbs radiation, but amplifies it.

Baralyth armor has the following advantages relative to molecular shielding:
  • Provides constant protection.
  • Provides modest protection against physical/kinetic weapons.
  • Cannot be disabled or circumvented, such as by field disruptors or exotic anti-shield weapons.
  • Cheaper.
  • Does not incur significant power/processor requirements.
  • Can be scaled to a larger variety of tasks (e.g. baralyth could be used to insulate specific workstations, rooms, or body parts against radiation).
Baralyth armor has the following disadvantages relative to molecular shielding:
  • A breach will not simply self-repair in moments, but will remain a weak point (the usual disadvantage of armor compared to shields).
  • Vastly less effective against lightsabers.
  • Heavier. A ship may be forced to make tradeoffs between agility and mass, especially if bolstering baralyth plating with anti-kinetic armor.
Baralyth armor has the following advantages relative to ultrachrome armor:
  • Somewhat lower internal thermal conductivity (extreme weapons fire will melt a local area to slag instead of the whole ship).
  • Better at some kinds of EM absorption/radiation (matte black rather than chrome; more likely to bleed off excess heat into space if energy processors are down).
  • Cheaper.
Baralyth armor has the following disadvantages relative to ultrachrome armor:
  • Somewhat lower thermal conductivity (can be cut by lightsabers, and allows focused extreme energy weapons to create breaches).
  • Somewhat heavier.

From the Factory rules:
2. The Armor Rating Extreme will require the submission to be UNIQUE. This armor rating is considered very strong and are usually dealing with unique items that should be restricted to Player Characters only.
  • You're going to have to drop those two ratings to Very High, m'afraid.

  • Since radiation is still just energy, does this weakness apply for that as well?
