I do the same, look up random things on Wookieepedia.
Another thing I do; Think of one of you r favorite characters in fiction, be it Captain Nemo or Batman, then start researching on Wookieepedia. As you look at things similer to them, an idea for a character (usually something completely differnt) will beign to build.
I.E: I wanted ot make a Rafiki-esque character. (I like Rafiki, sue me.) I started looking up babboon-like species. As I looked, I started htinking of ideas based on the various species. In the end, I coudln't find one suitable. So I started looking up just random species. Along the way I decided I wantexd him to be knowledgable on the force. But I dind't want him to be a fighter, and I dind't wsnta him to be someone that slings the force around. So I decided he's have the froce, but only minimal. So he's capable of doing things like activating artifacts, but not capable of using force powers. As I looked among species, I thought of Ewoks, but I decided I didn't want to be something mainstream (Lol) like that, so I started looking up similer species. As I went along, I decided i wanted him to be the type that looks extremely un-intimidating, but suprises you by being wise as heck. (Aka rafiki, or Yoda). Then I looked up Kushibans. As I came across them, the idea further dveloped, into what became my new character Pibit.
By doing that you can get motivation as you already kind of have a character idea in your head, by starting with sa character you know as a template, then yu customize it into somehting totally unique. So you get ideas as you go, and don't lose motivation for the character.
Then again, that may work for me, but it might not make any sense to you. So ignore me if ya' like.
