Bimmisaari Crisis

"MEDIC!"

Kurt's voice would lash out to the scattering crowd, echoing as other refugees were also making their own pleas and demands. It was chaos on a world that had been known for pacifism and the attempt to maintain the beauty of their world.

The world now colored by uncertainty and danger.

A small diminutive creature close to Kurt perked his head. His name was Kar and he was a local Bimm. Concern drew over his angled features, his large ears giving a twitch. Wariness drew and he struggled with the indecision to help. Finally, he managed gave a small "Tsk" sound from under his breath and went scurrying over to Kurt.

With that eerie singing quality, the Bimm's yellow clothing fluttering with the motion. "Come, pick up the woman," he sang, a small claw motioning for the man to follow.

"Must hurry, everyone is at a panic."

Panic was right.

Kurt could feel his heart constricting and his head spinning again, but at the very least he had a mission. Kaile was one of the few things in this galaxy that he truly cared about. She was like family to him, and although just a short while ago she was nothing more than that annoying crying waitress...she was now his best friend.

Without another word from the Bimm Kurt scooped his arms under Kaile. "It's alright."

His words were a low, hushed whisper. The Courier wasn't ashamed of anyone hearing him talk of course, but he was worried and oddly enough felt that whispering would somehow make Kaile hear him better. Without another word he shot after the other man, quickly following him along a small path that had apparently been created within the clearing. Panic still gripped him, but deep breaths calmed him as they walked further and faster.

"We'll get you some help." Kurt kept speaking. "It'll be okay."

His hand was still aching with pain, the crushed bones causing him to wince even as he carried Kaile towards a nearby building. "Who are you?"

Kurt finally managed to ask, drawing his attention away from Kaile for just long enough to give the man one good look. Kurt didn't really care who he was, he just needed someone to help Kaile.

The small, furry humanoid swung his head over. "Bimm." he simply said, for all Bimm be they humanoid or short stature as he simply considered themselves to be 'Bimm'.

"Medic!" came another cry, followed by, "We need to get off of this planet." from passersbys. Things were going to get all the more serious.

"They say that Imperial ships are in orbit!" just what did this mean? Would they also begin an orbital strike as in Charros V? Who knew.

The Bimm would scurry forward, leading Kurt towards the edge of the market place and towards the sectioned off area where the line of triage centers had been set to assist the local refugees.

"Here!"

Imperial ships?

Were they going to bombard? Would they deploy troopers? His heart began to sink, but one look down at Kailes still unconscious face was enough to snap him back into the moment. Hr couldn't deal with Imperials right now, he couldn't deal with the rest of the galaxy. He had to make sure his friend got help, he had to make sure that Kaile was okay. Everything else, including an Invading army, could come later.

”Help!” He called out as loudly as he could as the Bimm lead him passed a small group of people who had been crowding around the entrance to the small aid camp.

Immediately Kurt spotted a dozen men and women, some laying on stretchers and others just leaning against tent poles. Most of them looked worse for ware, though none were as seriously injured as Kaile appeared to be, at least by Kurt's rather unskilled estimation. The Courier looked about desperately, his eyes frantically jumping from place to place until finally he spotted what he needed.

A man with a red cross marked on his jacket.

”Hey!” Kurt called out, grabbing the mans attention. ”Help, please.”

The man looked at Kurt, hearing the desperation in his tone and then rushed over to meet him.

Travis Caalgen

The door to a small building opened with a defiant hiss and out limped Caalgen, blood dribbling down his forehead and his pearly white uniform scorched from fire and blaster bolts.

He looked back, knowing full well that he had lost two of his death troopers down in the dark recesses from whence he came. But it was not in vain, as he had acquired all the data he needed in a pristine disk clutched in his hand. The Imperial Director was about to begin finding his way back to his shuttle when he and everything around him was suddenly covered in a massive shadow.

Around a dozen or so ships, ranging from Imperial star destroyers to escort corvettes, arrived over Bimmisaari's capital city of Glastro. Everything and everyone seemed to stop to stare upwards at this terrifying sight, unknowing if these were going to be their last few seconds before green turbolaser fire sprouted from the fleet.

But it never came.

Instead; landing crafts descended on the city, landing in clearings all over the place. Their holds did not open to reveal intimidating stormtroopers or a squadron of Imperial tanks, but field medics and physicians with medical and food supplies. Travis knew at once, the attack on the refugee camp was not of opportunity, it was planned so that the Empire could claim a propaganda victory over the Silver Jedi, by taking care of the civilians abandoned by the latter power.

Caalgen was wretched from his thoughts when the building behind him exploded, most likely the damage from the secret battle within. It threw him to the ground in excruciating pain, slamming his head against a chunk of debris and rendering him unconscious. Hopefully, someone would find him and bring him to a triage center.

Hopefully.

"What is wrong?" the Medic began, pointing towards a medical cot where Kurt would be able to place Kaile upon. There was an underlying buzz in the air. The sort that came from mounting tension and uncertainty. From a nearby holoradio, the news of the Galactic Empire forces arriving near Bimmsaari and the ongoing orbital bombardment only served to heighten the panic.

Murmurs of what they should do and evacuation came just at the edge of hearing. "No, we do what we can right now. This is a field hospital, we have certain protections."

Indeed, unknowingly, the Galactic Empire would take this moment to spin propaganda by instead showing mercy and aid upon the people of Bimsaari. But would they believe it?

Time could only tell.

"Tell that to Charos IV!" came a snap, but the Medic ignored the commotion. He was too busy trying to check Kaile for vital signs.

Beyond, there was the sound of a sudden explosion. Cries reverberating. What was going on? Those who were near the building where [member="Travis Caalgen"] lay went to investigate.

What would they find?

”We-Sh-she.” Kurt stuttered from a mix of exhaustion, panic, and fear. His eyes could barely move away from Kaile, his hand wrapping around hers.

All he could feel was terror.

The Medic stared at him for a moment, clearly seeing the state of shock Kurt had landed himself in. The man remained silent for a moment and then reached out, placing a single hand on Kurt's shoulder and drawing the Courier to a more steady place. The man looked at him, his face stern and his eyes telling a story longer than any book.

“Son, relax. Take a breath. Tell me what happened.”

Kurt looked at the man, breathing. ”We were headed back to our ship. Something happened, there was a stampede...we got caught.”

He frowned, his eyes glancing to Kaile again.

”She...they must have stepped on her…” The next few words made him choke. ”She's pregnant.”

What was going to happen?

The medic's eyes went wide, immediately turning to a nearby nurse and medical droid to speak in a smattering of native Bimmarasri that Kurt would be unable to comprehend, but understand the seriousness of the matter by his tone.

"Okay, what's her name?" he turned towards the pilot again, the medical droid coming in to help in assisting in registering vitals. They had to get diagnostics on the woman immediately.

A small hand held scanner was given to the medic, and he began to scan Kaile from the top of her head and slowly moved down. The blood was already beginning to spread in a sticky, metallic stain, saturating Kaile's pants and the cot underneath her.

Once Kurt would answer, a nurse come come over to take Kurt by the shoulders.

"Okay, we need you to come over here, they need plenty of room to help her."

"Kaile." The word was snapped out in an instant.

Kurt was ready to give these people any and all information they needed to help his friend. Of course it didn't exactly aid him that he knew almost nothing about Kaile medically speaking. He had no idea what her bloodtype was, if she'd ever had any surgeries or anything of the sort.

They'd never talked about it. "Kaileann Vera."

Would they be able to look that up? Wou-no, no no. They didn't have that tech here, not in the middle of what looked like a refugee crisis. His heart caught in his chest, his lips thinned and his eyes settled on Kaile even as a nurse put a hand on his shoulder. The touch caused him to jump slightly, his eyes growing a bit as the woman spoke.

"But..." He looked down at Kaile. "I can't..."

The Courier trailed off, gently squeezing Kaile's hand, before he could continue however the nurse practically began to push Kurt away, pressing him away from Kaile's side.

[member="Kurt Meyer"]

"Please, let us look after her, you won't be able to do anything by being in the way." A little curt, but the truth.

"Do you know her blood type? Allergies?" a series of questions came at Kurt, private information that the pilot perhaps, should have known. Might have known had that even come up. But when had it? While they lived together and were best friends, they fully kept their private lives separate. Kaile hadn't even met Jamie, no had Kaile given any indication on just who might be the father of her child. Neither pressed the issue.

Maybe they should have.

Back at the cot, Kaile was blissfully unconscious. She had a concussion, but what was more terrifying was the inset of contractions that pressed over her belly.

The fall and the stampede of the refugees inducing her labor. Out here in the field, there was no way of stopping it.

"N-no." His heart caught in his chest as he made the admission.

He should have asked her, he should have gotten those details.

Kurt had read one of the books his mother had given him, it was supposed to have helped with Kaile's pregnancy and get some of the details...but he'd always been more concerned about making sure she was comfortable. His lips thinned for a moment, he tried his best. "We eat fresh food a lot."

Would that help? Maybe. Kaile loved fresh fruit and meat and had eaten all of it over the last year or so of them together, meaning she likely wasn't allergic to anything too common.

"Sometimes rations." That was his best guess. "I don't know her blood type."

His eyes were locked on Kaile as he spoke, never moving an inch.

[member="Kurt Meyer"]

That information wouldn't help save being aware that the woman at least ate healthily. Nothing that would allow the medics to work swiftly and efficently without wasting precious time. That much was evident with the Nurse's expression, although she did try to provide a small bit of comfort.

"Okay, then, come along," she would encourage him, attempting to have him move out of the tent and outside. There were more injured being brought in, one volunteer shouting, "watch out!" to Kurt and the nurse so they would move out of the way.

"We will do what we can," she told him again, edging him towards the area where the relatives of those currently being assisted were waiting anxiously.

Kurt gave the nurse a desperate glance. "I can't..."

He couldn't just leave her here alone, he couldn't just walk away. Kaile was his best friend, one of the only four people in the entire galaxy that he actually gave a damn about. She was his roommate, the person that had partially helped him turn into what he was now.

The Courier frowned.

"I can't leave her alone." The nurses stern glare would have been enough to make a Krayt Dragon back down. "Not by herself."

What would happen if she woke up? What would happen if she opened her eyes and she was in a room full of strangers with no one to recognize? Would she think that Kurt had abandoned her? Dropped her off on some distant planet with no help. "I ca-"

"You can and you will, they need room to work, you'll be in the way."

Kurt's heart dropped, the Nurse's hand firmly digging into his skin as she pushed him out of the tent.

[member="Kurt Meyer"]

"We'll come get you." the nurse assured him, closing the flaps shut behind him, leaving him behind to anxiety and wretched confusion. He wasn't the only one, as others beside him were also attempting to find out information.

"What about my daughter? Chirse, her name is Chirse! I brought her here an hour ago! I just want to see her. Is she okay?"

"Medic! Medic! What about my father? Where is he?! He isn't at where we left him, and the doctor isn't giving me any --"

It was a cacophony of chaos and confusion. One that would only end in tragedy.

Kurt was lead to the outside of the tent, his heart beating, his head swiveling from side to side as he tried to get a look at Kaile. As soon as he was out the Nurse pulled back the tent flaps, her lips thinning before she said something else to him.

He didn't hear her.

To him the noise all around the camp was nothing, a ring in his ears. All he could think about was whether or not Kaile would be okay, whether or not her baby would be okay. There was nothing else in his mind now. The coming Imperials were nothing, the losses here at Charros were nothing, the Refugees...everything was dropped from his mind. Everything within his mind raced, every thought that he had seemed to be skipped over by a dozen others.

Eventually he couldn't take it and slowly The Courier sat. He dropped down with a muted though, leaning against one of the tent poles. "Please."

He whispered quietly to himself.

"Please be okay." What else was he supposed to do?

Hours later...

Everything was woozy. Everything hurt. Or didn't. It was weird. Kaile's mouth felt dry, as if it had been stuffed with cotton balls and left there for days.

Consciousness came in degrees, and even then with a surreality that wouldn't allow Kaile to get her bearings.

It was dark. Or at least, she thought it was dark. No, her lids just felt heavy. She hadn't opened them yet. Was she laying down? Floating?

Maybe floating.

Did the gravity go? I'll have to fix that.

All the while the Lorrdian's mind was starting to pick up on things again, Kaile lay on a fresh cot, a blanket over her body with fresh clothes. Well, as fresh as they could find that would fit her comfortably. There was a small patch on her arm, a bio patch used to track her vitals.

She was on her back, barely awakening from the nightmare that had started it all.

When they'd finished the Nurse had been true to her word. The woman whom seemed to be more stressed than anyone Kurt had ever seen in his entire life had lead him to another tent. There he found Kaile, resting on a cot and surrounded by dozens of others like her.

Most seemed to be recovering slowly, either bandaged or wrapped in something close to it. Kurt tried not to pay attention to them. Instead he focused on Kaile. He sat on the floor besides her bed, all the chairs being needed elsewhere. His hand was resting on one of her arms, his eyes were closed and his head was leaning back slightly.

He hadn't slept.

He hadn't eaten.

It was not a choice that The Courier had made consciously, just that he didn't think to do it in the first place. All that he wanted was for Kaile to wake up, all that he wanted was for Kaile to be okay. He breathed quietly, his eyes folding over is friend every few minutes as if checking whether or not she moved.

[member="Kurt Meyer"]

Ever so slowly, Kaile’s lashes began to flutter. They still felt heavy, and there was an ache that came along with the blurry bright lights. Where am I?

There was the brief sound of wind. Of a fabric shuddering under it. A tent?

Her sight was blurry. Her senses, overwhelmed. At her side she felt the heavy weight of a hand. Larger than hers, warm. With a scattering of hairs along the forearm. Her own gave a slight twitch.

A small grunt and a groan would announce her awakening, the pilot by her side likely able to hear her move.

“K...Kurt?’ The Lorrdian gasped out, blinking rapidly as she attempted to gain her bearings, only to groan in pain at the dull ache she felt everywhere.

Kurt was half dazed, half asleep, and almost entirely out of it.

He was tired, hungry, and almost asleep, but as soon as he heard Kailes voice he snapped to attention. His head came up and his eyes lit up, a broad smile pulling across his lips. He didn't know, not suddenly anyway, but instead he half shifted and looked up at his friend from the ground. "Kaile!"

She was okay, she was alive.

Hurt but alive.

The doctors hadn't told him much of anything at all when they'd first brought her here. They gave him so statements of she would be okay and to alert them when she was up, but besides that they either hadnt had the time or didn't trust Kurt to actually be Kailes friend. Either way they'd said nothing aside from the fact that she would wake up eventually. Cruel, yes, but given the situation raging around them it was perhaps necessary.

"Are you okay? Stupid question but right now it was the only thing he could think to ask. The Doctors hadn't told him how she would be and he was just worried.
All the concern emenated from him like a tidal wave, his eyes fleeting over her again and again. "How are you feeling?

[member="Kurt Meyer"]

How was she feeling? Well what was she supposed to say? Everything was confusing. The Lorrdian's hands gave a tremble. Answering Kurt took a bit, her throat felt like cotton. Tongue thick.

"What--," whatever she was going to say seemed to fade, voice cracking as her vision would start to clear. She quickly gave a few blinks. Everything hurt. Everything --

Lifting trembling hands, Kaile brought them up to her face. Medical bio-stamps and a blood IV jiggling under the motions. Wait, the ba--

Her hands came down, moving over her belly. Where it had once been a soft swell, there seemed to be an emptiness inside. There was no flutter. No movement. Nothing.

Where was Quinn?

Everything came back. The refugees. The rush of bodies. The pain. The true extent of the matter seemed to roar within her ears. Eyes wide, she seemed to search for Kurt's blue eyes as if he held the answer. As if this was all just a nightmare and she would just need to wake up.

Ultimately. it wasn't.

That precious life that had been growing inside. The connection she had to Asmus and his scoundrel smile and gold-flecked green eyes.

Gone. Gone before she ever had any real chance at life.

Quinn was gone.
