- Name: Bio-Bacta Max
- Manufacturer: Lucerne Biological Systems
- Affiliation: Directorate, Silver Jedi Concord, Lucerne Biological Systems customers
- Market Status: Closed-Market
- Modularity: No
- Production: Mass-Produced.
- Material: ambori, Kolazhi, synthetic kavam, Vratixia renanicus extracts, Dola tree flower extract
- Classification: All purpose healing agent
- Method of Consumption: patch, injection, topical salve, bactade, immersion
- Average Life: 2-3 year shelf-life. Indefinite effects on organic (healed tissue)
- Nutritional Value/Allergies/Side Effects/ Purpose: Not a significant source of nutritional value - may even cause a decrease in nutrient uptake. People allergic to bacta, kolta, or dola tree flower extract may experience allergic reactions. Most common side effects are gastrointestinal in nature, such as diarrhea and constipation. Depending on the nature of the injury, patient may experience neuropathy-like symptoms such as numbness, tingling, stinging, or itching sensations.
- Synthetic Production: Unlike traditional bacta, Bio-Bacta Max follows in the path of Bio-bacta and several other more recent products to make bacta independently of Thyferra. Unlike some of these other products, LBS was able to recreate Kolazhi thanks to the company's access to Manaan due to its ties to the Silver Jedi Concord. Consequently, all of Bio-Bacta Max's components can be grown or produced on a variety of worlds or even in artificial habitats without a direct need to include Thyferra or the Vratix.
- Antibiotic: Bio-Bacta Max contains concentrated Dola tree flower extract, which circulates within the solution to attack bacteria and some other harmful microbes that might be present in an injury site. This helps to immediately stop many nascent infections which could theoretically turn into sepsis if left untreated.
- Excellent Healing Rate: Much like regular bacta, Bio-Bacta Max vastly accelerates the rate of healing.
- Relatively Cheap: Bio-Bacta Max can be produced from products grown on different worlds thanks to LBS's expertise in gene-slicing. This allows for a much more scalable mass production that is entirely independent of Thyferra's fortunes, which in turn, makes it cheaper to produce.
- Antimicrobial: Because Bio-Bacta Max is based on genetically engineered kolazhi rather than the traditional bacteria alazhi, an antibiotic can be included in Bio-Bacta Max. This allows Bio-Bacta Max to also treat bacterial infections often found from open injuries, which common bacta might actually accelerate the growth of, to prevent widespread infection and possible sepsis.
- Inconsistent Potency: Lucerne Biological Systems hasn't fully been able to make consistently potent Kolazhi. Sometimes this makes BioBactaMax more powerful than regular bacta, but this sometimes also means that is actually less effective than regular bacta.
- Neuropathy (temporary): BioBactaMax appears to work quicker on nervous system cells in many species (including humans) compared to other tissue types, which sometimes leads to temporary burning, stinging, or itching sensations until other tissue fully heals around it.
- Gut Issues: When used in large amounts, such as by immersion in bacta tanks, the antibiotics can also decrease the number of beneficial gut bacteria found in many species, which can lead to decreased nutrient uptake, diarrhea, or conversely constipation.
Bacta has long been the dominant treatment of choice for many injuries and maladies in the galaxy. As the source of such a vital commodity, Thyferra has such been an important strategic world, but many have worked over the years to develop bacta alternatives or bacta produced off of Thyferra. Lucerne Biological Systems turned their gaze into this lucrative market. Digging into historical archives of past research, they came across the concept of Kolazhi. Having none of the original plant to work with, they gathered genetic samples from Manaan and obtained electronic records of past specimens with which they then experimented by gene splicing into different varieties of alazhi plants. By trial and error, they managed to recreate a form of Kolazhi. Additional trial and error with processing this kolazhi with biochemical synthesizers and combining it with other traditional components of bacta allowed them to make a new version of purely synthesized bio-bacta. With bacteria no longer part of the formula, Lucerne Biological Systems opted to include an antibiotic within the formula to make it more effective in treating injuries created in particularly unclean environments, such as the battlefield or in austere environments.
The resulting Bio-Bacta Max is a fairly competitive product to traditional bacta. It possesses excellent regeneration properties along with a reasonably good antimicrobial effect, though it is hampered somewhat by the immaturity and inconsistently of the genetically engineered Kolazhi plants which are its foundation. Traditional bacta has a slight edge in more traditional medical settings, where its fewer side effects tend to make it the preferred choice of many patients. However, Bio-Bacta Max does tend to be cheaper and more effective at treating wounds created in unclean environments. For this reason, it has become more popular in emergency medicine and military settings. Bio-Bacta Max is expected to become a cornerstone product for Lucerne Biological Systems, which has consequently invested greatly in obtaining the proper agriculture facilities and partner in order to produce consistently large crops needed to create this product.
