SPECIAL FEATURES
- The ETL-04M can fire multiple types of energy torpedoes.
- Standard: Standard assault proton torpedo damage equivalent energy torpedo.
- Incendiary: Similar to the shot fired by the ancient Incinerator-class railgun, this torpedo can 'stick' to a target and continue to burn with the fury of a solar flare (naturally not the same temperature as a solar flare) for a short period of time, potentially superheating and weakening the structural integrity of armor and hull plating.
- Ion: A packet of ion particles that potentially does similar damage on target as an assault-grade ion torpedo.
- Cooling Systems: In order to prevent the large amounts of heat generated by the weapon from melting it, the SCDC-02S has an integrated cooling system that will shut the weapon down in the event of it overheating in order to perform a coolant flush and to allow the weapon to cool down. Each weapon has enough coolant to perform five coolant flushes, but can be connected to a larger coolant reservoir.
- Diagnostics and Analytics Suite: The weapon's in-built diagnostics and analysis suite keeps the crew apprised of everything from ammunition count to accelerator coil integrity and effectiveness.
STRENGTHS
- Long Range: The torpedoes have an extremely long range, allowing them to be used while potentially exposing the launch platform to minimum incoming fire.
- Versatile: The ETL-05S is capable of firing multiple types of energy torpedoes, making it a very versatile weapon system.
- EMP/Ion Resistant: The launcher is armored with reinforced duraplast and equipped with a combat de-ionizer, it is greatly resistant to EMP/Ion damage.
- Fast Projectile Speed: Because of the extremely high projectile speed, the chance of evasion by the target is lower than with several other types of weapon systems.
WEAKNESSES
- Slow Firing: The ETL-04M fires far slower than comparable warhead launchers as is typical for an energy torpedo launcher.
- Unguided: Unlike more traditional standard ordnance, energy torpedoes are unguided and fly in a straight line.
- EMP/Ion: If the launcher actually sustains enough EMP/Ion damage, it's accelerator rails will be permanently damaged, requiring a complete replacement of the barrel.
- Slow Mode Change: Changing which type of torpedo takes as long as the weapon's recharge cycle.
- Cooling System Malfunction: Should the cooling system malfunction or become damaged, the weapon will shut down to prevent a critical operating failure.
DESCRIPTION
"Those poor shabuire think putting distance between us is going to save them..."
- Strill Securities Fleet Admiral Nyles Kote
The HETL-05S was designed as an extreme range 'sniper' weapon, featuring more versatility than a disruptor based weapon system, and a higher ammunition capacity and projectile speed than both a disruptor and a mass-driver based weapon system. The HETL-05S was based on the proven design of the company's ETL-04M launcher, which has seen use during multiple notable operations. Initially, it the was the latter that was designed to used on capital warships, but the company decided that for the power cost of the weapon, it would be better to make use of a weapon system with a notably higher damage potential, one with a higher damage potential against enemy capital ships.
Like it's predecessor, the HETL-05S has an extremely long range. This enables it to be used against enemy warships while potentially ensuring that launch platform is as minimally exposed to enemy fire as is possible. This extreme range combined with the weapon's extremely high damage potential and projectile speed also increases the weapon's potential in an 'alpha strike'. This is further augmented by the variety of projectiles that the weapon can fire, potentially allowing a vessel to bombard a target from range with ion energy torpedoes to soften it up while the vessel closes to optimal range. That said, changing what mode the weapon is firing in takes as long as the recharge cycle between shots.
Like any accelerator weapon, the HETL-05S is vulnerable to EMP/Ion damage, and though sufficiently protected against what it could be expected to face on the battlefield, anything potent enough to overwhelm it's defenses will permanently damage it's accelerator rails, requiring a complete replacement of the weapon's barrel. Energy torpedo launchers are also infamous for both being slower to fire than comparable warhead launchers, and unlike traditional launchers, their projectiles are unguided.
The final, and possibly largest issue with the weapon system is the amount of heat that it generates. As a result, the weapon is equipped with an advanced cryo cooling system. Should that cooling system malfunction or become damaged to the point of inoperability, the weapon will shut down to prevent a critical operating failure, wherein it might melt itself from the heat of uncooled firing.
