- Variant Ammunition: Breshig War Forge Consolidated manufactures two types of ammunition for the RSM-01. Most pilots opt to have the rounds alternatively loaded into their feeds.
- High Explosive Incendiary Armor Piercing: Uses a baradium based explosive to trigger a gas incendiary charge (similar to the NOVA40 grenade) before driving a depleted baradium penetrator into the target.
- Ion-Detonator: An ion charge tipped round that's armed the moment it leaves the barrel. When it impacts against armor or a particle shield, the round detonates with about the same effect as ion missile, capable of severely damaging shields and unshielded electronics.
- Cooling Systems: In order to prevent the large amounts of heat generated by the weapon from melting it, the RSM-01 has an integrated cooling system that will shut the weapon down in the event of it overheating in order to perform a coolant flush and to allow the weapon to cool down. Most mounting platforms can carry enough coolant for five coolant flushes.
- Dual Feed: The weapon's dual feed system allows the operator to select a different type of round without a new drum having to be loaded by the craft's ammunition handling system.
- High Damage Potential: With it's incredible fire rate and the massive rounds that it fires at extremely high velocity the the RSM-01 is an extremely deadly weapon with extremely high damage potential.
- Accurate: The RSM-01 is extremely accurate, meaning that it's long range is not just a marketing ploy. The Jai'galaar's targeting systems can put the weapon's inherent accuracy to good use at the hands of a capable pilot.
- Long Range: The weapon's long range paired with the advanced targeting computers of the Jai'galaar means that the RSM-01 can be effectively used at long ranges, giving any platform mounting this weapon a considerable alpha strike potential.
- Rotary Weapon: The weapon's rotary barrel assembly reduces the wear and tear on each barrel as well as gives it a higher practical rate of fire.
- Limited Ammunition Capacity: Compared to a turbolaser of similar size and purpose, the RSM-01 has a significantly reduced ammunition capacity. Re-supply of ammunition during a battle is also significantly easier in the case of the aforementioned two weapon systems.
- Rotating Barrels: Should the weapon's rotary barrel mechanism become damaged, the weapon will become unable to fire.
- Vulnerable to EMP/Ion Damage: If the gun actually sustains enough EMP/Ion damage, it's accelerator rails will be permanently damaged, requiring a complete replacement of the barrels.
- Large and Heavy: The size and weight of the weapon and its ammunition played a significant factor in the design decisions of the Jai'galaar Fighter-Bomber it was intended to be mounted on, and is the biggest factor behind the fighter's reduced maneuverability.
- Particle Shields: Even with the Ion detonator rounds, the RSM-01 will have a tough time dealing with a particularly powerful particle shield on a large ship.
- Aim: Given that the weapon cannot be mounted in gimballed mount of any kind on a starfighter platform, and is not mounted that way on the Jai'galaar, the entire fighter needs to be properly aligned with the intended target.
When Breshig War Forge Consolidated was developing the Jai'galaar Fighter-Bomber, they had every intention of developing the fighter around its principle weapon system rather than the other way around. Much deliberation, planning, arguing, scrapping of said plans, planning again, more arguing, some threats, a few fights and a broken jaw happened before the design team settled on two weapon systems; the RSM-01 Repeating Super-Heavy Mass-driver and the SIC-01 Super-Heavy Ion Cannon. The purpose of these two weapons was brutally simple; to engage enemy corvette and small frigate sized targets as well as hardpoints on larger capital ships. Of course, both weapons would be very much capable of taking on several of the armored monstrosities that occupy a place on the modern battlefield planetside as well.
The RSM-01 was the first of the two weapons to finish development and enter the prototype stage, thanks in no small part to the fact that it was in many regards simply a scaled up version of the RHM-04 Repeating Heavy Mass-driver. As such, the RSM-01 retains many of the smaller weapon's benefits, including a practical long range thanks to its own inherent accuracy and an extremely high damage potential thanks to its fast fire rate and the damage the massive rounds it fires at extremely high velocity are capable of doing.
Likewise however, it inherits much of the smaller weapon's flaws, as well as a novel one of its own. Like the smaller RHM-04, the RSM-01 has a significantly reduced ammunition capacity when compared to a similar turbolaser weapon, and in addition it's ammunition supply is far harder to resupply in the heat of a battle. Of course, being a mass-driver, any significant EMP/Ion damage will fry the weapon's acceleration coils and/or rotary assembly, rendering the weapon useless. While the Jai'galaar is built around the RSM-01, the weapon is still the biggest factor behind the fighter's reduced maneuverability, and given its fixed mounting it also means the fighter has to be properly aligned with the target before the weapon can be fired with any hope of actually hitting a hardpoint precisely. Though this tends not to be a problem when just spraying rounds at larger parts of capital ships, such as engines or the bridge.
Strill Securities took to procuring the fighter almost immediately after it was produced, but given the sheer variety of options available on the galactic market, export sales were very low initially. Though far from the first company to attempt to produce a fighter-bomber with a large gun configuration, Breshig War Forge Consolidated hopes the RSM-01's sheer destructive potential will help sell the fighter.
