Britain's Future Warship: The Dreadnought 2050

So, I found this article on the news feed of my homepage (Military.com). I thought this was pretty darn cool and it spoke a lot about the advancement of technology into the next age.

"The sleek-looking trimaran whose name honors the famed early 20th-century battleship was dreamed up by naval designers at the company at the request of the Ministry of Defence.

The craft, called the T2050, is envisioned with an acrylic hull that could be ballasted with water to turn the ship into a stealthy semi-submersible, an exterior electromagnetic rail gun, an interior operations room with “Google Glass” walls to display tactical information and a garage in the transom with a “moon pool” capable of launching underwater drones, among other innovative features."

They've been leaning towards that design for a while now.

What that thing sounds like to me is a whole bunch of money that's going to get sunk by a kid with a suicide bomb on a fishing boat. A nonmetallic hull might be great for a radar signature, but it just can't take the same sort of beating that good old fashioned steel can.

I've never seen that movie, but yeah, it does kinda seen like a stealth ship. Quote: "an acrylic hull that could be ballasted with water to turn the ship into a stealthy semi-submersible"

I think this is pretty cool idea. It'd be able to replace a lot of warships and reduce manpower, becoming more efficient and cost-effective in the long run.

The modern Navy isn't about highseas battles or large-scale fleet operations; so it doesn't make sense to have a hundred or more warships in service when you only need a modest task force to patrol each zone.

So I'd say it's a smart alternative to have one of these things instead of half a dozen destroyers. By the looks of it, it also fulfills multiple roles which is innovative.

Good job to whoever conceptualized it. Even if it doesn't actually get made, it'll surely lead to better things in the future.

We haven't seen large scale naval battles largely because no two nations with large navies have really and truly hammered it out in decades. I have not a doubt in my mind that this thing will be hell on wheels...er...water for small scale engagements. But to preclude the possibility of full scale fleet combat in the design is to court disaster. It's much the same problem they're facing now with the F-35. It was designed to do everything, and it can in fact do a lot, but none of it very well. There was an article not too long ago about how it got smoked by a decades old F-16 in a dogfight. True, from outside of visual range, it will probably do very well, but you can't always count on having that advantage. When other countries get their next gen stealth fighters in production, I don't think it's too far of a stretch to say that, when radar counts for nothing, the only way they'll be able to engage each other is in visual range.

It'll be much the same thing with this, if it ever gets built. At that point, armor is going to be every bit as important as firepower.
