Building For Tomorrow

Oddball

This is what happens when you tap the glass
Oddball stood on the bridge of a bridge of the mothma class destroyer, he had joined the rebel alliance ever since the vanguard had defected back to the Techno Union, the people who had killed millions on Druckenwell. Who had almost killed him if it wasn't for the Omega Protectorate, and while Oddball wasn't about to saddle up and go join OP to fight the generation one dread guard did in fact join the alliance in order to protect the galaxy from monsters such as the Techno Union. They could claim they stood for freedom all they wanted, but when the cards were down and the poodoo hit the fan. They would sell their own down the river in a heartbeat.

So that's why Oddball was here, he wasn't a selectivist by any means but he had a bone to pick with those bastards, and his job right now was to provide security for the building of a new piece of technology for the Rebellion. Orbital defense stations that were small and capable of packing a wicked punch.

"See to it that we have people roving the perimeter." the fett clone said firmly.

They had begun. The ship yard began to lay out the frame work for the station and it wasn't anything massive, about six hundred meters total with the frame work for the hyper velocity gun at the center. They were fast tracking this one through the process to test it out, they would be here for about three weeks for the development and it would be tough living but oddball had been through worse.

Day 3

Oddball had just finished his morning PT session in the hanger of the star destroyer with his squad of fellow dread guard that stood with him since the fall of Druckenwell, he smiled at them all brightly and looked about the hanger. Things had been pretty relaxed the last few days but he was always wary of attack, ever since the last group of TU Sith Lords had materialized onto the planet. Gods only knew if they could use their space magic to teleport behind him while on the John. But needless to say that wasn't important right now, wiping the sweat from his face oddball walked over to where the ray shield met the vacuum of space and stared out at the station.

They had started putting up the durasteel and glass plating of the facility by the looks of things. Everything was houses on one floor except for the barracks that looked to be divided into two. Most likely for the separation between marines and crew.

"Hey Buck! Get the crew over to the mess for chow, I'll be here a few minutes." he said while looking back to his fellow clone.

"Sure thing Oddball." Buck said with a thumbs up and walked back with the other dread guard

Oddball continued to look out at the station in front of him, it had a circular ring around the hyper velocity gun and an area large building connected to it. It was probably where the crew for the gun kept the ammo and loaded it. Besides the gun itself it was the biggest thing on the station. But oddball just kept looking at it until he felt his stomach rumble then headed off to chow.

Day 6

Off day. Oddball woke up next to a female communications officer in his bunk fast asleep, it made him smirk a bit. Back in the day clones could barely get a woman to look their way, now with the shortage of fett clones in the galaxy women practically threw themselves at the modern day super soldiers, but that didn't mean oddball wasn't a gentleman. Giving the woman a kiss on the forehead she stirred a bit then tugged at her blanket as she rolled over to continue to snooze. The clone would leave her a note saying he went to go check up on the gun then return shortly.

"Sleep well." he said to the woman then changed into some relaxed clothing with sandals.

Taking a stroll outside he found his way to an observation window where he could see the station. He checked on the progress from a datapad and compared it to what he was seeing.

"Alright love, what do we have today." he said as he scanned through the datapad and statistics.

They had finished the power core for the facility and installed a ray shield generator by the looks of things. The two docking bays for small freighters were finished and by the looks of things they were still going hard on the outer ring of the facility. The loading and HVG building still looked barren and was being built up by a few crews. Oddball could see the welders lights from here and it looked like a symphony of lights that emitted no sounds in the vacuum of space, he rather liked that really. But as he scrolled through reports he nodded then went off to get breakfast in bed for his new rebel sweetheart.

Day 9

"Fire!"

The sounds of Red Dead assault rifles barked as they shredded through various paper targets that were lined up against the ray shield door of the hanger. Oddball shouldered his rifle and rolled into a firing position before squeezing off a few rounds that entered the T-box of a paper target's brain pan. He took some satisfaction in that, most soldiers had to train for ages to do that and the clone was only sixteen years old. Yes they had discovered the cure for advanced aging thank goodness but he was still young for how he looked, but being trained since birth to be the perfect soldier came with a lot of crash courses on warfare. Oddball held up his hand as his datapad went off with the daily status alert and he smiled as he picked it up.

"Hold fire, have to check this and sign off!" he said with a smile behind his helmet.

Lifting up his datapad he began to check on the development of the station. The ring looked to be nearly done and it seemed that spanned about a good two hundred meters in diameter around the HVG. And speaking of the massive cannon it seemed that it's development was complete. They had finished building it now all was left to do was to finish up the ring and plenty of other various small jobs. But the biggest being the loading and control center. Everything had to be perfect there or the gun wouldn't function properly. So oddball signed off on a few forms and made sure everything was a ok with the station.

Day 13

"So that's when I said, well yeah I got some spice on me!" oddball said and a round of laughter echoed around a mess hall table.

Then everything went silent for a moment as the laughter died down and things got a little sad. The clones bowed their heads and thought back to their leader who had bravely died for them on Druckenwell, and dammed the traitor who had killed him. But now after seeing what had happened oddball wasn't sure it was supposed to go down that way.

"To Galaar, may he rest in peace. You earned it boss, you earned it." the clones all lifted up their cups of various sport drinks in a toast.

"For Galaar." the five clones said then drank to his memory.

There was a bit of silence for a moment before oddball's datapad went off and it was the ring about the daily sign off sheets and reports. He'd have to take it otherwise some fruity rebel superior would chew him out over not having the forms shot over ASAP. And oddball was certainly not in the mood for that, so he lifted up his data pad and began to scroll through developments.

By the looks of things the ring was completely finished, it wasn't furnished with any gear yet but it was pressurized and sealed. The techies would come through soon and start planting stuff down. But before that could happen they were still building the life support system and and gravity generator. Would be awfully hard to get that working without those. They had started to build the main power generator and that seemed to be going well. Once those were set up the tech heads could start the process of setting up all the gear. And by the looks of the back building that connected to the gun that was still under heavy construction. It would be a bit until it was ready to go. So oddball signed off on the forms then sent them up to his superior. Long may he be a douche bag.

Day 15

"So we set this up here, here and here to create a barrier of these for when the Union returns. We start placing them around the planet and sweep out any of those abandoned stations, I don't want another cyber security breach going down like last time. So make sure those are swept off, alright?" oddball was giving a briefing on the plan of defense for whenever the next invasion came.

While he wasn't a person that was high up in the ranks of the rebellion often enough officers and other people who were came to him for advice on issues such as this. He had been on many operations and had seen enough combat to make them look like children. But he was planning on continuing his briefing until his datapad went off concerning the station, the fett clone looked up at the officers and smiled.

"Just a moment please, I need to take this." he said then walked over to the corner of the room taking out his data pad.

The analysis for today was quite simple. They had finished installing the power generator, gravity generator, and life support systems. This meant that the techs were now going to go in and start filling the place with furnishings and other important gear to make the station function. The docks were good and as usual the rear loading and control building was still under construction, they must of been working with some real powerful stuff if they were going taking that long in there, but either way oddball didn't mind. This wasn't about money for him anyway and he could be up here in space for ages. So he signed off on the forms and sent them on their way.

"Alright, where were we?" he said with a smile.

Day 18

Oddball sat on the observation deck of the star destroyer and sipped at a cold glass of ale, he was on his day off and really all he needed to do was sign the forms when they came in. Besides him was his brunette communications officers who was leaned up against his shoulder, a glass in her hand as well. The Fett clone gave her a smile as he kissed the top of her head and held her free hand. Was this love? Oddball wasn't entirely sure about that, he'd never experienced it in his short life, but whatever this was it felt good. So he didn't bother putting labels on what he was to the woman until they had to, so he just relaxed with her.

"Really makes you feel small huh?" he said to the woman and let out a soft sigh.

"You're so lame." she said with a giggle then kissed the man on the lips.

After a few moments oddball's data pad went off and it was time to check up on development of the station. He sighed and held up a finger for her to give him a moment. She nodded in return and understood the situation between oddball and his supervising officer. Taking the datapad out of his pocket he flicked the screen on then started to read the reports.

"Let's see here." he said softly

by the looks of things the techs were done completing the furnishings. The barracks are done, the mess hall and the ring was furnished with various computers and other areas for the crew to operate in. By the looks of things all that was left to do was finish up the rear building which was going through it's final stages of completion. So oddball signed off on the reports and knew there wasn't a lot going on in his neck of the woods. The TU hadn't been around as of late.

Day 20

"This is the upper receiver, this is tough and it consists of the bolt, ejection port, and the barrel. It is imperative that you keep the bolt clean so the weapon can operate. Is this understood?" oddball stood in front of a crowd of rebel militia and was going over the statistics of the rebels weaponry.

"The Red Dead has an effective range of three hundred and fifty meters. Now remember when you are shooting that distance you don't need to factor in for wind, just shoot. Don't go full auto either, you need to select your shots and deliver accurate fire." holding up the rifle oddball continued to give his lecture on the weapon system in the hanger. That was until his data pad went off making sure it was time to sign off on his forms.

"Take ten to use the head and stretch, we'll continue with fields of fire when we return." He then paced off to the side.

That was it, the station was done. Well almost done, the rear building was complete. That was where they housed the ammunition for the gun, and was the center control room where they would aim and move the gun. Now they had to install the last bit of things, which were the thrusters and stabilizers for the station as well as the guns. They needed a way to move it after all and defend it from fighters. So oddball was pleased by the news he was getting and soon they could start producing more of these stations. So oddball signed off on the forms and tomorrow was the final day then they were done with overviewing this station.

Day 21.

This was it, the day of completion. Oddball was almost giddy to say the least. He stood on the observation deck with his squad watched the final pieces be put into place. The thrusters to move the station around and the point defense lasers to repel drop ships and other fighters looking to sink the station. Fifteen point defense lasers total all mounted to the exterior of the ship where the gunners could control them from various positions along the ring. Large thrusters were placed along the edges of the ring in it's full radius so the station could slowly move itself and aim to wherever the gun needed to hit.

"She's a beaut ain't she?" oddball said with a chuckle and looked to his men.

"Alright boys. Tomorrow at zero six we are to get up and get on the station to see it in action. So rest up and we'll be there in the morrow." oddball said with a sense of pride.

The man smiled and turned around to head back to the barracks, finally after all these weeks they could see this puppy in action.

Oddball

Everything was bolted to the floor, and when oddball thought everything. He literally meant everything. As he and his squad walked through the station with the big wigs they were all required to wear magnetic boots that clanked against the durasteel floors. That was odd? But he supposed everything had a reason for being, so as they walked along the path they were on a short tour of the facility. Everything seemed pretty basic, barracks, mess hall, storage facility, in the area with three floors. And along the ring it was just gunner spots for the point defense lasers, twenty of them total. But the paths were just that, paths that lead from the living and storage areas to the main control room where the gun was shot.

Once they arrived in the control room they stopped and a team of engineers met them, there was a round of hand shakes and talks between admirals and engineers. Afterwards oddball just watched as the engineer made his talks about the station.

"So you are wondering why everything is bolted down and you are required to wear mag boots? Well it's simple, this is a capital ship sized HVG and it requires a lot of power to operate and we simply didn't have enough room for the generator to power all the functions as it fires. So this means while the gun fires we shut off the gravity and the shields. We can properly aim the weapon as well without having the crew flying through the air. But on to the most important part." the engineer said sternly

"Who wants to see this thing fire?" everyone smiled and the lights went red as it shifted to firing mode.

Everyone turned on their boots and the gun was primed as the shields and gravity went out, the gun needing to cypher power. Picking a target of a decent sized asteroid the gun fired a three round burst of massive slugs and completely shattered the giant stone. Hitting it hard it flew apart and Oddball just smiled. After a good thirty seconds after firing the gravity went back online as well as the shield.
