- Classification: Military Base, Seat of Government, Personal Home
- Location: Mandalore
- Affiliation: The Mandalorian Union, Mandalorian Supercommandos, Death Watch Reformation
- Population: Moderate
- At any given time there are roughly thirty thousand individuals living in the Bastion of Steel. Eighty percent of this population is made up of military logistic personnel, as well as various civilian workers all required to ensure the frontline military of the Union is able to run efficiently.
- The remaining twenty percent of the population living at the Bastion are Union Supercommandos, the primary security force for the base. The Supercommando's operate primarily out of the Bastion, with rotating groups of warriors taking up posts within the base, while others are sent back to the frontlines of the Union. This duty is seen as an honor among the Supercommandos, who take their duty of protecting the military leadership of the Mandalorian Union, and the Mand'alor himself.
- Demographics:
- 85% Human
- 15% Various other Species
- Accessibility: The Bastion of Steel is located in the southern hemisphere of Mandalore, in one of the few regions left untouched from the Sith occupation. Located at the foot of a small mountain range, and surrounded by flat desert plains, the Bastion of Steel is rather accessible to foot traffic, though the last kilometer or so surrounding the Bastion is surrounded by the start of a forest that goes into the mountain range itself, making the approach by vehicles difficult. Air transports are able to approach the Bastion with ease.
- Description: The Bastion of Steel is an expansive complex, covering roughly ten square kilometers. The Bastion itself is made up of several dozen grey concrete structures, spread out at regular intervals from one another, with several walkways connection the buildings in the air, as well a dozens of pathways on the ground. Several large statues can be found within the Bastion, each one depicting a Mand'alor from the past, even those that are best left forgotten. The largest structure within the Bastion is the Jalyimtr be Ijaza, the Hall of Honor. Located at the very center of the Bastion, rising a kilometer into the air. The Hall of Honor is a sharply angled building, built to take the appearance of a blade piercing the sky. A large wall surrounds the Bastion, rising ten meters into the air and five meters deep, with various weapon emplacements on it. A large landing pad is located just behind the Hall of Honor, and serves as the primary way for traffic to enter and leave the base. The base, at first glance, appears to be overgrown with natural vegetation, with trees even protruding from some buildings, and grass and moss covering the grounds and sides of buildings, but this is not the case. When the Mandalorian Union recommissioned the Bastion, they decided to leave the plant life where it was, as to not destroy one of the few places still untouched by the Sith on their homeworld.
- Jalyimtr be Ijaza-Hall of Honor: The Hall of Honor serves as the central seat of the Mand'alor, and the primary base of operations for the Mandalorian Supercommandos. The first few floors of the structure are dedicated in their entirety to the Supercommandos, as well as security and armory rooms. Each Supercommando, upon taking their oath to the Union and Mand'alor, are given their own quarters within the Hall should they choose to live there during their regular guard deployments, several dining halls for them to eat in, as well as several recreational rooms and training centers. A medical center is located at the rear most of the Hall of Honor, allowing for any injuries on the base to be quickly treated, as have a highly protected location for the wounded to be protected in case of attack. The lowest levels of the Hall are designed with siege defense in mind, allowing for the defenders to hold highly advantageous positions throughout the complex.
- At the top of the Hall of Honor is the personal quarters of Mand'alor the Reclaimer, Kreslin Westwind. It is equipped with a small, private landing pad for ease of access, a small garden, and personal training room should he not wish to fight with the Supercommandos. It is made up of a total of five rooms; a kitchen, living quarters, bathroom, training center, and library. Unlike the rest of the Hall of Honor, the personal quarters of the Mand'alor are kept at a cold temperature, roughly ten degrees Celsius, to better simulate the climate from the Mand'alor's adoptive homeworld of Recluse. All the windows are kept at a colder temperature, to creating a slight covering of ice on their surface, to further add to the effect.
- Just beneath the Mand'alor's personal quarters is the War Council chamber. The room itself takes up the entire floor it is on within the Hall of Honor, with several large holo projectors, tactical databases, and a built in bar for refreshment for long meetings. The only way to access the War Council chamber is through a private turbolift at the far side of the room, which can only be accessed by the Supercommandos, the Mand'alor, and those military individuals given clearance to attend the War Council. A large window dominates one side of the room, facing the forest surrounding the Bastion of Honor.
- Risr-The Boundary: Surrounding the entirety of the Bastion of Steel is the Risr, or simply the Boundary. A large concrete wall reinforced with durasteel, the Boundary encircles the Bastion in a single, unbroken layer. Placed every hundred meters along the wall is a tower, rising ten meters above the wall sections surrounding it. Each tower is divided into three sections, with two sections dedicated to artillery weapons, and the third focusing on anti air. Inside the towers themselves are shield generators, providing a limited protection for the tower itself and the walls to either side of it for five meters, where the shield will then cross with the next towers shield. Each tower also has its own power generator, located at the base of the structure, to power the shield and weaponry, as well as a basement armory fitted with a turbolift, where ammunition is stored and ready to be taken to reload the defensive guns.
- Ta'hyapr-Sanctuary: To the rear most of the Bastion, at the very entrance to the mountain range, sits the Ta'hyapr, the Sanctuary. On the outside, the Sanctuary appears to be nothing but a large dome, reminiscent of the ancient Sundari ruled by Duchess Satine. Within, a lush garden, filled with every plant from across Mandalore resides. A large spiral staircase at the center of the Sanctuary leads up to an elevated platform, with numerous terminals and research stations. Beneath the Sanctuary itself is a massive underground complex, roughly three square kilometers in circumference, and ten kilometers deep.
- The upper section of the Sanctuary is designed to serve as a repository for the biological life of Mandalore, with records and samples of every indigenous plant and animals kept under constant guard. This part of the Sanctuary is intended to serve as a last ditch reserve of rebuilding the ecosystem of Mandalore should the time come, as well as keep a record of the worlds ancient ecosystem for biological study.
- The underground section of the Sanctuary serves as a fallout bunker for the citizens of Mandalore should war ever return to the planet. The lower section of the Sanctuary is capable of being sealed off entirely, preventing any biological threats from getting into the massive bunker, as well as a massive, one hundred meter thick Beskar defense layer. In times of crisis, the civilian populace of Mandalore will be evacuated to the Sanctuary, where underground accommodations and supplies are kept at the ready at all to accommodate large portions of the populace. The lower levels of the Sanctuary are guarded by Death Watch Reformation members, charged by their Watchmaster to protect the contents of the Sanctuary, be it just supplies, or the civilian populace of Mandalore, at all costs. Those warriors chosen for this duty are some of the best the organization has to offer, and are experts in their craft. This is necessary, as should the extensive defenses of the Sanctuary be breached, they will be leading the defense to buy the civilian populace time to escape to the final part of the Sanctuary.
- Connected to the lower portion of the Sanctuary is a massive starport, formerly a Beskar mine that has since been fully hollowed out and reinforced. Set deep within a mountain, the hangar is filled with dozens of bulk freighters and other vessels, all dedicated to the purpose of seeing to the evacuation of the civilians from Mandalore should the planet be on the verge of falling. The Death Watch Reformation members guarding the Sanctuary will lead this exodus, using their talents in covert actions to ensure the escape of the civilian populace, while the defenders of Mandalore buy their people time.
- Ker be Mandokarla-Wall of Heroes: The Wall of Heroes is a massive pillar of crimson stone, with the name of every Mandalorian warrior who has fallen in the service of Mandalore, either in its liberation, or in the time since, inscribed on its surface. Surrounding the Wall is a large pond, with a single bridge leading over it to the small island where the Wall is situated. Flames burn in braziers spread out around the island, lit at all times to ensure that those who have fallen in the name of Mandalore and her people shall never be lost in the shadows.
- Paranaor be Srabus-Legacy of the Ancestors: The Legacy of the Ancestors is not a single location within the Bastion of Steel, but rather several similar locations spread out around the base. Each location is a small shrine, with a large statue depicting a past Mand'alor at its center, rising twenty meters into the air, and surrounded by engraved obsidian stones depicting their deeds. Each statue is garbed in the armor of their time. Some of the most prominent statues are:
- The statue of Mand'alor the First stands at the gate entrance of the Bastion, standing eternal vigil of the descendants of culture and legacy he helped to forge. In his right hand, raised above his head, is a bloodied spear. In his left hand, crossing with his right arm, is an ancient Jed'aii blade, broken halfway down its length. The statue and pedestal it is on are both made from a muted white marble, inlaid around its base with various Clan symbols.
- The Statue of Mand'alor the Indomitable is located near the center of the Bastion, staring to the sky above to prepare to defend Mandalore from invaders from across the galaxy. At his feet are dozens of lightsabers, some broken, as well as the shattered remnants of an ancient Basilisk war droid. He holds a blaster in his right hand, pointed up at the sky above. His statue and pedestal are painted a dark red.
- The Statue of Mand'alor the Preserver is located outside the Sanctuary, waiting to once again restore the Mandalorian people to their place within the galaxy. He stands with his hands crossed before him, two blasters at the ready, and the smoking remains of a vehicle at his feet. His statue and pedestal are colored a dark green.
- The Statue of Mand'alor the Uniter is located at the starport behind the Hall of Honor, standing atop a fractured throne. Scattered around the throne are dozens of symbol from various criminal organizations of the galaxy, all smoldering from the flames around the statues feet. He stands in eternal vigil over those who enter the Mandalorian Sector, holding two Beskad blades at the ready before him. His statue and pedestal are colored a dark grey.
- The Statue of Jaster Mereel is located at the steps to the Hall of Honor, the forefather and original creator of the Supercommandos that not call the building their home. He stands on a simple pedestal, holding only a simple blaster rifle, watching over the steps of the Hall of Honor, and eternally judging those who now call themselves Supercommandos within the Mandalorian Union. The statue and pedestal are colored made from obsidian.
- The Statue of Mand'alor the Infernal stands before the Wall of Heroes, and those wishing to visit the small island must pass beneath her gaze before they may see the names of all those who have fallen. She stands as the eternal embodiment of duty for those who have given their lives for Mandalore and its people, as well as to stand as a reminder that those who have died are not truly gone. Her statue and pedestal are colored a deep yellow.
SECURITY-Maximum
- The outer most defense line of the Bastion of Steel is the Risr, the Boundary. A ten meter tall and five meter thick wall, the Boundary serves as the first line of solid defense for the Bastion. The surrounding terrain around the Bastion on three sides is nothing but empty desert, with every inch of ground having been pre-targeted and ranged by the hundreds of artillery cannons placed along the walls in the towers located every ten meters along the Boundary. The airspace of the Bastion of Steel is protected by hundreds of anti-air defense turrets, ranging from point defense cannons to defend against small shuttles and bombers, to large planetary defense lasers to protect against capital ship bombardment or heavy bombers. Every inch of the Boundary is protected by layers of overlapping shields, with a second shield covering the entirety of the Bastion itself, with the generators for all these shields located underground to protect from orbital or surface attack.
- At any given time, there are roughly six thousand Mandalorian Supercommandos stationed at the Bastion of Steel. These warriors primarily act as the guards of the base, as well a reserve force for rapid deployment anywhere on Mandalore at a moments notice. They have several dedicated armories across the Bastion, ensuring every warrior is able to field a vast array of weaponry to tackle a wide range of threats. As well as armories, there is a single vehicle warehouse, allowing the Supercommandos to meet any potential threat with a limited armored response.
- Spread out around the Bastion; inside the Boundary wall, underneath the pathways, and within the buildings are thousands of Fury Class Death Spheres. Should the Bastion become overrun by enemies, these weapons can be activated remotely by a secure signal only capable of being sent from the War Council chamber. The Death Sphere will deploy throughout the Bastion, hunting down and eliminating any threat designated by the command and control node within the War Council chamber. They are capable of cutting through vast hordes of enemy infantry, and delaying enemy armored vehicles long enough for the Bastion's defenders to withdraw to better defense positions.
- Two hangars are located within the Bastion, one containing ten squadrons of Nynir Gunships, and the other containing ten squadrons of A'den Class starfighters. These aircraft have a permanent garrison of pilots within the Bastion, ready to deploy at a moments notice to engage enemy ground forces with artillery support, or engage in dogfights above the Bastion to protect it from enemy transports, supported by anti-air weaponry.
- The Hall of Honor is the only building beside the Sanctuary to be capable of sealing itself off from the outside world, protecting it and its occupants from any chemical or biological based attack. It has numerous weapon emplacements located along its surface, controlled from the War Council chamber, capable of defending against both ground and air targets. Within the building itself, the first few floors are designed with a maze layout, difficult to navigate for those unfamiliar with the structure, and littered with defense positions and heavy weapon positions for defending Mandalorians to use against their foes. The Hall of Honor has its own dedicated shield generator as well as armory, located below the structure to allow for a secure power supply and ammunition storage center. As well, all turbolifts leading to the upper floors of the Hall of Honor are only accessible by those with clearance, and the defenders on the first few floors themselves do not have it.
- The Sanctuary is the last lien of defense within the Bastion, with trenches and bunkers surrounding it on all sides. Four separate shield generators, located below ground, project an overlapping defense of the buildings upper level and surrounding defenses. The lower section of the Sanctuary is sealed off from the outer world by a one hundred meter thick Beskar entrance. Beneath this is another maze of tunnels and defense positions, as well as biological weaponry. Death Mist and Biotoxin being the primary of these two.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Bastion of Steel is an ancient structure, built centuries ago by the Mandalorian people, though no specifics can be discerned of its exact construction time or builders. Originally the Bastion was a city, built to protect its inhabitants from the dangerous wildlife that existed within the lush forest that used to be far more prevalent in the southern hemisphere of Mandalore. Overtime however, as the centuries passed as the Mandalorian people began to move more and more off world and into the wider galaxy, as well as migrating to the more populous north hemisphere of the world, the Bastion began to fade in importance. It would make a brief recovery in use under the rule of Mand'alor the Undying.
It would remain a ruin for several more years, leading in to the fall of Mandalore at the hands of the Sith Empire. Clan Westwind, coming from their homeworld of Recluse to answer to call in defending the homeworld of all Mandalorians, used the Bastion as their primary base of operations. Anti air weaponry was brought in from across the world, and used to create a fortified positions clear of Sith air power. Clan Westwind would use the formidable, if decayed, defenses of the Bastion to hold off the Sith while they fought to buy the other Mandalorian Clans a chance to get off the world after it was clear the Sith would win the day.
With the liberation of Mandalore at the hands of the Mandalorian Union, led by Kreslin Westwind, the Bastion has seen a return to prominence. Wishing to separate the governing bodies, Kreslin moved his military command and rulership of the Union to the newly renamed Bastion of Steel, while the civilian government and leading figures of the Union would remain in the still rebuilding Sundari. Kreslin would use what little resources he could to repair and make the Bastion of Steel habitable, while most of the resources the Union had for reconstruction went to rebuilding the civilian infrastructure. This policy would lead to a mixture of seemingly ruined structure next to freshly built pathways, or vice versa. The Bastion is still being rebuilt, though the nature within is largely being allowed to remain. One of the most recent additions was the addition to the Hall of Honor, and formation of the Supercommandos, who would become the primary defense force for the Bastion of Steel.
Now, the Bastion of Steel serves as the military command for the Mandalorian Union, as well as the permanent residence and seat of authority for Mand'alor the Reclaimer, Kreslin Westwind.
