Character Captain Lorne Kantera

  • Species: Human
    Rank: Captain
    Age: 27 GSY
    Weight: 173 lbs
    Eyes: Blue

    Name: Lorne Kantera
    Faction: Smuggler's Alliance
    Homeworld: Bovo Yagen
    Height: 5'11"
    Hair: Brown
    Force Sensitive: No

Appearance: Lorne's sharp features and piercing, ice-blue eyes are coldly handsome, but his voice and manner give a different impression. He smiles easily, laughs readily, and carries himself casually, as if utterly unworried by anything around him. He has a way of putting people at ease, blithely swapping stories and cracking jokes. Those who look closer, however, can see that this is a facade; no one stays alive in the underworld if they genuinely don't have a care in the galaxy. Beneath it all, Lorne is sharp, alert, and coiled to spring into action at the first sign of trouble.

  • + Gifted Pilot
    + Skilled Negotiator
    + Experienced Gunman

Lorne wasn't born into the galactic underworld like some career criminals, but when he made the switch, he took to the lifestyle like a firaxan shark to water. Experience, along with a variety of mentors in the art of being a scoundrel, have made him into an extremely effective smuggler. He can out-fly, out-talk, and when necessary out-shoot most opposition that comes his way, and he has learned tricks to escape from situations when he can't manage any of those. Lorne has a keen nose for potential profits, and can turn even a disastrous run into an opportunity half the time. He's also an excellent card player, which keeps him fed when all else fails.

    -- Reckless
    -- Thrill-Seeking
    -- Irresponsible with Money

Lorne wasn't forced into crime. He has no tragic story of being displaced by war or oppressed by overbearing authorities. He got into smuggling because he was bored, and because he wanted to live free. To him, the best parts of the job are the parts that get his blood pumping. He loves the feeling of putting everything on the line, risking it all and pushing himself and his ship to the maximum. Naturally, this gets him into trouble on the regular. He takes jobs no reasonable captain would even consider, and he and his ship are perpetually banged up after one crazy scheme or another. Credits are like sand through his fingers, always blown on the next big thrill.

  • Sometimes, you can't fight who you're meant to be; at least, that's what Lorne Kantera tells himself - and his disappointed family. Born on the quiet backwater world of Bovo Yagen, Lorne was a bright, precocious child who excelled in school. He also soaked up tales of the galactic fringe, the regions of space where a man could make his own destiny, living free of expectations. Those tales appealed to Lorne; his childhood was a mess of expectations. His parents pushed him to attend prestigious universities, engage in civic service, and eventually enter their same career path as a planetary bureaucrat. It was good, useful work, gradually improving lives.

Lorne hated it. He knew that he shouldn't. What he was doing mattered, making Bogo Yaven safer and guiding the government to better serve its citizens. But when he looked into the future his parents had planned out for him, a quiet life of service, a nice suburban house, a wife and a couple of kids, he found that the prospect filled him with dread. It seemed like a slow death, the gradual draining away of his opportunity to go out an experience all that the galaxy had to offer. At twenty-five, with two high-level degrees and a promising career lined up, he did something new and drastic: for the very first time, he disappointed his parents.

Rolling all of his savings into a down payment on a battered old freighter, Lorne took off from Bogo Yaven and never looked back. For a while he found work as a legitimate charter pilot, moving cargo and passengers from system to system, but he quickly found that doing things the legal way barely allowed him to make his payments. That wasn't the life he wanted, either. He wanted to live big, spend big, and feel the rush of risking it all. So he got into the black market - gunrunning, spice smuggling, transporting wanted fugitives. He never took slave cargoes - that was too far to stretch his old moral compass - but he'd do just about anything else.

Adventure, thrills, and a whole heap of trouble followed.
