- Extremely advanced scientific platform: Using bleeding edge scientific systems, including restricted military hardware, for its size, this is one of the most effective scientific platforms available.
- Stealthy: Scientists need to be able to concentrate on their tasks without interruption. This vessel is very stealthy even when its advanced cloaking device is disengaged due to its stealth polymer, allowing science to progress even when detection could prove hazardous.
- Fast hyperdrive: In the competitive world of science, being the first to a new discover can.be the difference between you or your enemies getting the advantage, the advanced hyperdrive gets the Carrack where it needs to go with minimal delay.
- Tough ship: As expected of a ship with access to the latest miltisry equipment, it is extremely well shielded and the HPI have even added armor plates made of an exotic alloy to further protect it from damage. The solar ray shielding has the added benefit of making the ship safe whilst studying high energy events such as supernovae.
- Puny armaments: Equipped with only the equivalent of 8 heavy laser cannons, the vessel can do little offensively against anything heavier than a gunship so firefights must be avoided.
- Space at a premium: With all of the advanced hardware packed in to the vessel, there is not a lot of room for passengers, creature comforts or defensive troops. Sleeping quarters and other personal facilities are relatively small. For particularly long missions it is recommended that at least one of the mission pods be dedicated to additional consumables or comforts.
- Vulnerable to boarding: As a science vessel, the ship is vulnerable if boarded and easily taken over. It has a small crew of scientists and the ship does not have the marines or internal defences you would expect from a military vessel.
- Inflexible hangar layout: The ship is listed as having a hangar capacity of 1. This hangar is not a traditional open bay, instead, it is pods designed to maintain, carry and launch scientific drones. There is no option to swap these out for fighters although with redesign work the pods could support different types of small drones.
When the new overseer tool over, one of her key mission statements was to expand and push forward with modern scientific advancements and to this end she requested HPI contractors design and built a fleet of science vessels for her department. These would replace the now aging science vessels currently in service.
The designs were influenced heavily by her positive experience with the Luminary Light Explorer and as such the ship would remain small, highly flexible and packed to bursting with the latest technology the galaxy had to offer including a new ultra fast hyperdrive.

Automation as AI systems do allow a single person to operate the vessel, but with so many advanced systems this will be very taxing and not sustainable indefinitely.
The ship has facilities to be used by up to forty scientists depending on the mission profile, but the compact design of the ship means that it is likely that notable scientists will operate the ship with significantly less staff aboard.
On missions the ship relies on its stealth to avoid combat as although it has powerful shields, its offensive armament is poor compared to ships of a similar size.
