- Planetary Features:
-
- The lonely ocean: A name given to this desolate landscape by the locals of Port Taraven. As they say, 'An ocean of sand, and not a soul in sight.' What used to be a massive ocean, is now nothing more then and endless plain of sand, giant black rocks and the bones of long dead aquatic giants. Little to nothing lives out here, for there is next to nothing to support life.
-
- The whistling stones: If you head due south of Port Taraven, you come across a land some say is cursed. Large pillars and plautaues of stone rise from the desert landscape. Porous and cool to the touch on even the warmest days, these strange stones have a unique feature to them. When the wind blows, they whistle, or sing depending on who you ask. Some say they hear singing and voices amongst the winds, as if something from long ago is try to speak to them. The more superstitious believe a great tragedy happened here and refuse to set foot on the land.
-
- Malik swamp: This oversized swamp stretches for hundreds of kilometers in every direction, making it the largest body of freshwater on the planet. A super oasis in a vast desert fed by large underground aquifers and rainwater from hundreds of kilometers away. Because it never dries out, it has become home to not only the largest number of flora and fauna on the planet, but also has the most diverse species. This is also a major stop for migratory species who spend most of their lives roaming the deserts.
-
- Major Locations:
-
- Port Taraven: The capital city of Castellum. Originally a First Order mining facility that also doubled as a military base. A large imposing structure that towers of the surrounding desert. Mines had were built into the adjacent mountainside with processing facilities stationed directly above. Landing platforms had been built up the top half of the structure, allowing the command center full view of incoming freighters. The interior of the structure was designed for troops and workers stationed on the planet. While the outside walls were heavily fortified. After the fall of the original First Order and the gulag plague, the facility fell into the hands of pirates. Most of the original structure has been kept the same, with the exception of what few workers the Mines have left, who were forced out into the surrounding area. Overtime, a small city began to form around the major base, giving rise to Port Taraven itself.
-
- Geothermal plants: Nearly all of Port Taraven's power comes from geothermal plants scattered around the area. The numerous ponds of boiling water seeping from the either has provided an easy source of power even during its original building.
-
- Native Species: None
- Immigrated Species: Human, Nikto, Weequay, Twi'lek
- Population: Sparse: 50,000 estimated
- Demographics: Human 70%, other 30%
- Primary Languages: Basic, Huttesse
- Culture: Castellum has a very mixed cultural background, mostly due to the fact that most of the planet's population is off-worlders brought there against their will. Those who have been there for generations have mixed different beliefs with others, most of which have been hidden from the pirates ruling the city. However, with the fall of the pirates rain of tyranny, that had begun to charge. Colorful awnings, flags and the like have begun to arise. Even the lightweight clothes people wear have gained more color and life. Various shrines to desert spirits have started appearing at the edge of the city and elsewhere. A city once heavily oppressed, is no coming to life after decades of dormancy.
- Government: Originally dictatorship, now elected clan officials under one ruling chief
- Affiliation: None
- Wealth: Low: During the decades after the gulag plague, pirates laid claim to the planet. All amassed wealth was kept mainly to the pirate king himself, while next to nothing made it to the average citizen. What wealth that was collected was from piracy or other illegal means, which meant the income was very low to start with. In recent days, and with the pirates driven from the planet, the citizens are beginning to see an increase in income through legitimate trade.
- Stability: Low, Living under a dictatorship run by pirates is not high on the safety meter, unless a pirate. During the pirate kings, most codes of conducted only applied to the pirates themselves. Such as no murdering without reason, or stealing if you can't get away with it. Those who were not pirates were fair game for most things with little consequences. With the fall of the pirate kings, new laws were put into place to protect the common folk from such things. Given time, stability will begin to grow.
- Freedom & Oppression: Under the old dictatorship, freedom was for some and not for others. Those who took under the banner of a pirate captain or swore an oath to the pirate king could do just about anything within reason. Those who did not, could be punished for nearly anything. Over the decades, the common folk learned to keep most of their beliefs, spiritual or otherwise, hidden from prying eyes. Now, however, the ability to express one's freedoms as drastically improved. People are not punished for voicing opinions or displaying their spiritual or personal beliefs. This has caused a boom in cultural blending and expression across the city.
- Military: The planet's old military was originally made up of individual fleets of pirate captains. A motley collection of varies ships, weapons and crew from across the galaxy. Current the planet's military consists of volunteers of a wide range of backgrounds and used equipment. The ruling body has made plans to fix this in the near future. The planet's best defense is the fact that it's truly not known about and doesn't appear on star charts, effectively hiding it from most dangers.
- Technology: Galactic Standard
Before the gulag plague ravaged the galaxy, there was the First Order. A military state that was rapidly expanding across the galaxy. In order to fuel this expansion, the order needed resources and lots of them. After its discovery, Cadt became one of many planets targeted by the First Order for its resources. Port Taraven was soon built on its surface and its ground cracked open for mining. A venture that didn't last very long.
Port Taraven had barely been active for two standard years before the First Order collapsed. Personal and resources were pulled elsewhere or those who no longer had jobs left. Some stayed, attempting to keep the facility going, but with little luck due to the lack of funding. Several decades had past and Port Taraven was officially abandoned and lost to the galaxy. That is until a new power had found its way to the hidden mining world.
Six hundred years after the last miner had left the surface of Castellum, pirates arrived. They quickly claimed the old military base as their fortress, which was a golden opportunity by any means. Not only was Castellum hidden from the galaxy at large, it also sat right on the Hydian way trade route. For the next several hundred years, the pirates grew their little empire, raiding shipping lanes, taking both cargo and slaves. Overtime the city of Port Taraven grew, not only from the pirates themselves but the slaves and their descendents. With the growing city came the long rule of pirate king and the tyranny they placed on others.
The rule of the pirate kings eventually came to an end. Mandalorian mercenaries arrived unannounced, slipping through the defenses the pirates believed would always protect them. Caught off guard and unprepared, the pirates suffered heavy losses during the initial attack. Survivors either fled to their ships or held up in the fortress. Over the decades, they had grown complacent in the belief that they would never have to defend their home. Now that the enemy was at their doorstep, they realized how unprepared they were. They became divide through infighting, which lead to a quicker fall. Few were left to defend the last pirate king as he died on his throne.
With the last of the pirates either captured, killed or driven off world, the mercenaries took over. They established a rule of clans under one chief. Many of the citizens braced for a new form of tyranny, but became surprised when their new clan leaders established laws to protect the people, made plans to build up the city and spoke of establishing trade and commerce. For the first time in decades and entire lives to some, there was a sign of hope for the people of Castellum.
